Tuesday 4th December 2007 marked an important milestone for Messier-Dowty and specifically the A350XWB IPT based here at Gloucester. The contract for the design, development, qualification testing, manufacture and support of the A350XWB main landing gear was signed by Pascal Senechal and Joel Berkoukchi of Messier-Dowty together with Francois Mery and James Allen of Airbus. The A350XWB is Airbus’ latest development aircraft, designed to meet market demand for a medium capacity long range wide-body family. There are three aircraft variants in the A350XWB family –800 (270 seats), -900 (314 seats) and -1000 (350 seats) An ultra long- range version, the A350XWB–900R, will fly even further while a freighter version, the A350XWB–900F, will complement the passenger models. What is different about the A350XWB program? Airbus has involved Messier-Dowty a lot earlier on in the development phase of the program. The advantage for us is that we have had a greater influence in the final aircraft design than we have had in previous programs. During the plateau phase our engineers, Andy Paddock and Paul Greenwood have spent a lot of time co-located at Airbus Toulouse. We have received very positive feedback from Airbus on the way in which we have worked with them in this plateau phase. Chris Morgan, A350XWB Program Director said, “by working alongside the Airbus landing gear team we are confident that the design represents a good balance across the whole airplane.” “Broader, earlier and closer involvement from tier-one suppliers is what we believe Airbus will require for future aircraft programs. Since the introduction of IPTs eighteenmonths ago, the A350XWB IPT is one ofthe first programs, which has been ableto adopt the IPT organisation from thestart. All functions are representedincluding: program management,engineering, estimating, manufacturing,supply chain, and customer support.

Chris said, “the IPT organisation hasreally enabled us to design to cost andfor manufacture as well as design for in-service. The difference now is that, witha fully co-located IPT, we have witnessedmore effective, broader communication

and reinforced concurrent engineering,which has resulted in informed decisionmaking. The IPT works together with thesame shared objectives which is tosatisfy the customer and shareholderrequirements.”

As well as the design and developmentactivity, the Gloucester site will also beresponsible for the manufacture of bogiebeams and the final assembly of theA350XWB main landing gears. Most ofthe MLG testing will also be carried outat Gloucester.

The total market for this type of aircraftis expected to be some 7,000 aircraft by2030 and Airbus is confident to capturea substantial share with the A350XWB.As of 31st October 2007 Airbusrecorded 234 orders for its A350XWBaircraft family. The largest customer andthe first one in the Middle East region isQatar Airways which signed up for 80 ofthe aircraft type (20 x A350-800, 40 xA350-900, 20 x A350-1000) in Mayearlier this year. Aircraft deliveries arescheduled to begin from 2013.

PROGRAM ROLL-OUTS SINCE THE LAST EDITION…

The first A400M nose landing gear has been delivered from Gloucester.

The nose gear was assembled at Gloucester comprising all the structural components and equipment, both from its supply chainnetwork and the shock absorber from Bidos. The nose gear was then delivered to our customer EADS CASA in Seville, to theA400M Final Assembly Line, where it was installed onto the first aircraft together with the wheels and tires.

TRADE SHOW ROUND-UP

NBAAIn September Messier-Dowtyparticipated in the annual NationalBusiness Aviation AssociationConvention in Atlanta, the world’slargest business aviation tradeshow.

More than 1,200 Exhibitorsparticipated in this year’s convention,which included 120 aircraft on display.

We displayed an interactive exhibit, demonstrating hard landing detection andloads monitoring, as part of our SMART STRUT™ Landing Gear HealthMonitoring system.

In recent months our landing gearexhibits have been out on the road withour suppliers, both home and abroad asan example of the ‘end product’.

Mettis-Aerospace at Redditch,borrowed an A320 main gear for theirOpen Day in September.

Seco Tools borrowed a BAE 146/Avro RJnose gear in September for their stand atthe EMO Machine Tools Exhibition inGermany.

GEARS ON DISPLAY

Cotswold Aero Club borrowed ourexhibit of Sir George Dowty’s InternallySprung Wheel for their 80thAnniversary Dinner.

On Thursday 18th October 2007, AvroVulcan XH558 had her first flight since1993, when she flew intoBruntingthorpe Airfield.

Seco stand at EMO exhibition

Aubert & Duval also used the A320main gear at their Open Day inSeptember, held at their facility in France,celebrating 100 years of the Aubert &Duval Trade Mark. Over 4000 visitorsattended including employees and theirfamilies plus local VIPs.

The Vulcan Operating Company ( VOC ),responsible for the restoration, haspassed on its thanks to Messier-Dowtyfor the support we have given to helpreturn it to the sky!

The aircraft now has to carry out furthertest flights before they finally get the‘Permit to fly’, these will take place overthe next couple of months.

The VOC hope to keep Vulcan XH558flying on the show circuit, over the nextten to fifteen years

The Paris Airshow in June welcomed almost 2000 exhibitors and over400,000 visitors, including 150,000 trade and 160,000 members of the public.VIP visitors included the first visit of French President Nicolas Sarkozy andFrench Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

Flying display highlights included the A380, Rafale, Falcon 7X, Eurofighter, andTiger helicopter, of the 40 or so aircraft taking part.

Commissaire General of the show, Louis Le Portz, commented, “This year’sshow benefited from a favourable economic environment, as orderannouncements have shown…” This referred to record announcements fromAirbus, with a string of orders, some425 in total and Boeing announcing arecord order from ILFC for 787s,making it the biggest customer forthe new Dreamliner.

On the Messier-Dowty stand wedisplayed a range of our latestprograms, including: Boeing 787 main& nose gears, Airbus A350 XWB maingear, Airbus A400M main gear,Sukhoi Superjet 100 main gear andthe Dassault Falcon 7X nose gear.

Over the past 4 months anotherlarge universal test frame has beenassembled into the test departmenthere at Gloucester. A furtherdemonstration of the continuedinvestment the company has madein sustaining specialist equipmentto meet the needs of obtainingcertification for our products. Theframe and all associated toolingwas designed in house by SteveCook, and manufactured by TMEngineering who are based in theMidlands. Its first use will be thestatic strengthtest on theA400M MLGassembly, and iscurrently beingcommissionedfor that purpose.

NEW UNIVERSALTEST FRAME

Test Department UpdateAn article was presented in the ‘OneTeam’ magazine (February edition)describing just what composites are, andthe design process evolution to producecomposite side and drag braces for theB787. These are a few words relating tothe two phases of testing currentlyunderway in the test department insupport of the components achieving fullcertification flight clearance:

Development: This has been ongoingfor over 2 years and has seen us conductover 50 different tests from smallmaterial samples to full-scalecomponents representative of the realarticle. The aim is to close thedevelopment testing by year end. Allthe work to date has helped contributeto the next phase that is productionstandard.

Certification: Closing and freezing thedefinition for the final productionstandard side and drag braces is nearlycomplete and the picture below showsthe type and number of tests required.A hectic testing phase lies ahead overthe next months where all our loadingtest presses will be fully engaged in thevariety of testing outlined.

The year started with oneof our technicians DavidSmith emigrating toAustralia. A suitable sendoff was arranged, and Ican report he is doingwell down under.

We stepped up ourefforts in support of the

Guide Dogs for the Blind charity byinstalling boxes to collect; coins, keys,old currency, costume jewellery, stampsand old mobiles phones. If you have anyof the above you want to dispose of,please send it across (or we can collect)as every little bit helps. We also have agood range of second hand books forsale at very reasonable prices so comeand have a look.

Our connection with Guide Dogs comesfrom one of our dept members, PaulHudson, whose sister Julie became blindat the age of 14. She is pictured, below,

with her guide dog Tara at the recentBadminton Horseless Trials event where13 members of the Test Dept took partincluding Paul and raised £800. RichGilbert from the Test Dept also raisedmoney for the Guide Dogs when herecently completed the Berlin Marathon.

You may even have said or heard theexpression “oh we just need to test it“.To do this takes a number of steps that wecapture in a process which presents themin a logical manner for ease of use whilstmaintaining quality control principles.Thisprocess is described in Guide TE 001,available on Documentum with links toreferenced procedures. A brief summary ofthe four key stages are presented below

Planning: From award of contract usingthe top level management documents thatwere used in the successful bid process.

Preparation: Manufacture of fixtures andfittings in readiness of supporting testequipment such as control systems,calibration of loadcells and transducers andconformity of the unit to be tested.

Execution: Running the test andmaintaining the conditions requiredthroughout the test duration including anyinterim inspections, checks and subsequentreporting.

Reporting: The test results that may alsoinclude inspections, checks and disposalinstructions of the test article.

A day in the life of an AirbusAssembly Line Inspector

Although not part of the Qualityfunction they all have delegatedresponsibility within the assembly shopto inspect and approve the assembly andfitting of all components for LineReplaceable Units (LRUs) such assidestays, shock absorbers, which gointo gear builds or can be sold as spares,also for the whole gear buildsthemselves, which are sent as OriginalEquipment (OE) to Airbus.

The paperwork side of the job is reallythe start of the gear build process. “Thisinvolves taking the gear specificationsfrom Airbus and building a folio for eachgear to be built” says Stewart Bussonone of the Inspectors on the shop floor.“It’s the paperwork which has all theindividual parts’ traceability and makessure that the correct components gointo each gear build, like making sure ithas the right brakes, sidestay, shockabsorber etc”. So it basically forms theblue print for each gear build that isgoing to the customer.

The second part is when we get thedetail parts in, either from the other

global sites, suppliers or our ownmachine shops. If the parts require subassembling then we inspect the workafter they have been built up. Thisusually involves checking the componentall over after bush assembly, and sealingfor any damage or issues that make thepart unsuitable for build. If itssatisfactory then the paperwork can bestamped up and the component can gointo finished parts stores, or as is moreusual, straight onto a gear build.

The Inspectors job wouldn’t be completewithout checking whole gear builds.“We usually start off by checking thegear for cleanliness and checking for anydamage to the paint work” says PaulBedney. To be an inspector is a verylearned process, “You tend to find littlethings as we go along and make a list”says Val Caldarone, “like wire lockingnot correctly to spec, or a little sealantshrinkage” most of the small issues canall be dealt with on the shop with thefitters on hand. Checking off that thecorrect parts have been fitted and theFolio is all stamped up.

“The bigger issues come if the partsaren’t available as this causes disruptionto the inspection process” Stewartcomments. That’s the more frustratingside to the job. Once the gear is finallycleared after build, everything has beenchecked, the Folio for the gear build iscomplete we can sign off the EASA form1, which is the official certificate forairworthiness which we have to supplywith the product to clear it for flight.This is where we have to be sure thatthe gear is in proper order and we don’trelease anything to the customer unlesswe are certain that it is all right. Thegear can then continue its journey ondown to Airbus ready for its first flighton a brand new A320 or A340 aircraft.It is a feeling of pride you have whenthe finished product goes out the doorand it’s ready to go onto a new aircraft.

The visit coincided with the engineer’scompletion of the GraduateDevelopment Scheme, Gloucester’s 18month introduction for new graduatestarters. The purpose: to find out aboutnovel and innovative manufacturingtechniques, which have the potential todeliver savings in landing gearmanufacture, both today and for thefuture.

The AMRC’s main technologies revolvearound developing new manufacturingtechniques. Reductive manufacturingtechniques are in essence ourconventional machining, whereby wereduce a larger component i.e. aforging, into a smaller finishedcomponent i.e a bogie beam. The AMRCare developing improvements in theseprocesses by tuning the computercontrolled machining programs used tocut the component such that machiningcan be achieved at a much highercutting rates. This then results insignificantly reduced run times forbatches of component manufacture thanwe are currently achieving.

Additive manufacturing techniquesreverse the idea of beginning with a

large piece of material and reducing it toa finished component. Additivemanufacture can be achieved in manyways. One type is Shape MetalDeposition, where a component is‘grown’ by depositing successive layersof material in an argon environment,similar to laying down a weld bead. Itproduces a near finished component inone controlled process with minimalmachining required afterwards toachieve finished mating surfaces. Theprocess has the benefit of requiringsubstantially less raw material to achievethe same geometric component havingmassive savings by reducing waste.Another benefit is the reduction in leadtime for a new component. A forgingwhich may have taken years to developand procure could now only take acouple of weeks.

During the trip, the TWI introducedsome of the novel joining techniquesthat are being developed. The joining ofcomponents allows smaller, moreefficiently manufactured sub parts tobecome one larger component canreduce the overall cost of manufacture.Techniques that were illustrated during

the day involved the joining of metals byfriction processes such as stir welding orvibration welding. These processes allowmuch tighter controls over the quality ofa finished weld compared withtraditional techniques. This may allowwelding to become a viable process forlanding gear manufacture.

Messier-Dowty Gloucester is currentlyreviewing many of the processes boththe AMRC and TWI are involved withand collaboration projects are currentlyunderway. It is these new technologieswhich may allow us to manufacture thecomponents for the landing gears of thefuture with significant financial savings.However the adoption of faster moreeconomical technologies will also give usthe advantage of reducing the leadtimes for components and contribute toour responsibilities with theenvironment, world energy andsustainability which are becoming moreand more relevant in today’s world.

In the earlier part of this year there was a visit made to SheffieldUniversity’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) andThe Welding Institute (TWI) by the young engineers from CustomerServices and Engineering.

2007 CHELTENHAMSCIENCE FESTIVAL

The School Aerospace Challenge hasbeen a great success again this year. It isa competitive challenge that introducesteams of young people to real lifesituations involving research, design skillsand working together in order to satisfythe needs of a customer.

Each team prepared a report in whichthey presented their idea, including atleast one design drawing. The judges,composed of a retired RAF test pilot, andsponsoring company’s members, choosethe best 18 teams from the UK andinvited them to attend a one-weekresidential course at the School ofEngineering at Cranfield University.

Activities during the course included thestudy of aircraft and aero-engine design,wind tunnel operation, airlineremergency evacuation, and team-building exercises. Students also had theopportunity to pilot both a fixed wingaircraft and helicopter, in addition to thechance to sit in a RAF Hawker and chatwith the pilot.

Students found the residential coursewas a unique opportunity to learn moreabout the engineering side of aerospaceand the opportunities it offers. As wellas being educational, the event was funand exciting to attend. The graduatesfrom sponsoring companies, helpedmentor the students in an attempt topromote engineering to the futuregeneration.

A Lean day recently held at Messier-Dowty and Messier-Services broughttogether many employees from variousSAFRAN group companies.

The aim of the day was the same as forthe seminars recently held in France,namely to bring together everybodyconcerned by Lean initiatives at Groupcompanies within a given region toshare common experiences regardingLean initiatives.

Messier-Dowty was well represented onthe day with presentations given by NeilKenyon on Surface Finish LeanImprovements, Alex Ball on A320 MainLanding Gear Value Stream and PeterWillis on First Article Inspection ProcessImprovement.

Site tours of M-S and M-DL wereconducted highlighting improvementsalready implemented, experiences andbest practices were also shared duringthe day.

2007 Innovation ContestThe Innovation Contest this year reaped a record 53 entries from the Gloucester site with 65 individuals involved. Our previoushighest was 22 projects with Gloucester last winning the MDI contest in 2004.

This year at the MDI judging level, Gloucester, unfortunately, just missed out on the honours of a winning entry, however, theGloucester overall winner, Pete Willis, did receive a special mention from the MDI jury.

The aim of the SAFRAN wide Innovation Contest is to reward innovative projects which are being developed or implemented in thecategories listed, plus any good ideas under the new Eureka category.

On 23rd May Dave Smith (Glos site coordinator for Technical Data Integration) & Phil Hopkins(Glos Design manager) attended the Best of British Manufacturing IT awards ceremony tocollect the winners award for “Best ROI measures and benefits from IT in Engineering Designand Development” on behalf of Messier-Dowty, for the application of Catia V5 design systemsin design / development.

This award is an excellent reminder that Messier-Dowty is at the forefront in the use of newdesign development tools and techniques such as model based definitions and the sharing of3D design data across all functions within concurrent engineering processes. There is alwaysmore to do in terms of development and consolidation of these new tools however we have

taken a large step forward over the past few years and we are already gaining great benefits from this approach in support of our customerand business demands. This achievement is a credit to everyone involved in the implementation of these tools to date, from the global

“Technical Data Integration” team through to the end users of the tools and the recipients of final design data in all areas ofthe business. Dave and I were very pleased to be invited to attend this award ceremony and accept the award on

behalf of Messier-Dowty and everyone involved.

BEST OF BRITISH MANUFACTURING IT AWARDS

Each Group subsidiary chooses its overall winner and submits the best project in each category to SAFRAN. The SAFRAN jury panel thenallocates a prize for each category, as well as the SAFRAN grand prize. But remember, the contest is not only about winning prizes, but aboutgiving employees a voice in improving our business.

The graduatesare destined to work within thefollowing areas:- Suresh Bansal -Programs; Kevin Foreman -Engineering; Bonsun Olajide -Engineering and Jean-Philippe Villain-Chastre -Production Planning.

The first 11-a-side match of 2007 betweenMessier-Dowty and Airbus UK was played outin hot conditions under clear blue skies atGloucester. A convincing victory for Messier-Dowty was achieved with a combination ofsolid defending and skilful football played inthe final third.

After a cautious first 20 minutes from bothteams Andy Matthews opened up theaccount for M-D with a cleverly worked firstgoal. This was followed up within 10 minutesby a fine strike from 30 yards out by JonMorrison, played in by Jonathan Seguin.Good work from Jon Bailey, Mart Inns andDave Butters gave the Airbus defence furthertrouble and more goals beckoned.

Airbus pressed hard during the closing stagesof the first half and were unlucky not to scorewhen two shots rebounded off thewoodwork.

Set pieces provided Messier-Dowty’s next twogoals; both came from accurately loftedcorner balls from Martyn Phillips which Alex

Ball won in the air twice to head into theback of the net.

Stout defending from Ben Clark and LeeWilliams helped M-D keep a clean sheet withPhil Phelps showing great commitment intackles.

Mark Ayres showed good composure in goalproducing several fine saves and alsoproviding the assist for the 5th goal with along clearance into Airbus’ 6 yard box whichPhillips converted.

In the second half Seb Mathevet battledtirelessly up front, his efforts being rewardedwith M-D’s sixth goal.

Airbus never gave up the fight and continuedto press for the full 90 minutes. Theirpersistence was paid off with a lateconsolation goal in the last twenty minutes.

Both teams now look forward the next fixtureof what has become a regular event on theMessier-Dowty sporting calendar.

SAFRAN SAILING CHALLENGEIn a very stiff competition of 87 boats, Gloucester Pirates did well! We returned with atrophy for the Best Foreign Crew, and full of memories of an amazing experience.

The Messier-Dowty Gloucester boat was skippered by Andraz Vatovec, with a strongsupport from Robbie Reynolds (surely the best chef on the Challenge), Peter Sandalls(willing to sacrifice blood to the Gods of Sea), Sebastien Mathevet (doctor spinnaker),Phil Perry (the man for the main) and Richard Murray (navigation master).

Throughout the three-day challenge we developed a strong team spirit, which enabled aninexperienced crew to achieve a great result. The team did their best on the second day,ending the second race of the day on the 18th position! Racing results combined withquiz results gave us the 28th position at the end of the Challenge.

Next year we are going for top 10!

GLOUCESTER SITE WIN MIDDLESEX TROUTFISHING COMPETITION

This year’s winner of the PrestigiousMiddlesex sponsored Trout FishingCompetition eventually won in a tightcontest by Messier-Dowty Gloucester. Thiscompetition is held annually on the famousbig fish water Dever Springs in Hampshireand is eagerly fought out between teams ofthree from Middlesex (2 teams) Messier-Dowty Gloucester, Dowty Propellers, Fords &Westlands.

The team representing Gloucester was DougIreland, Andrew Lewis-Watkins & RogerDelaney and in very hot and clear conditionsnot conducive to Fly Fishing, catching fishproved to be extremely difficult, however byworking as a team and selecting the correctpatterns and matching the various hatchesthroughout the course of the day theymanaged to beat their nearest rivals for thetrophy by over 2lbs on aggregate. This is onlythe second time in 11 years that Messier-Dowty have won the competition.

Middlesex who has been a supplier toMessier-Dowty for over thirty yearsmanufacture and supply the Gloucester sitewith Assemblies and Spares for variousAircraft programmes including Airbus A320,A330 / 340 Enhanced & A400m.

During my twenty-one years at Messier-Dowty, I have been anavid field hockey player. Most recently I took part in theInternational Master Hockey Tournament, which occurs everytwo years over a nine-day period. This August, Birmingham

University hosted the event (in 2009 we are due to play inHong Kong) and the teams taking part came from Australia,England, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Scotland, Singapore,Wales and a British Asians team

It’s a Knock-Out!This year at the Severn Sound organised 'It's a Knock Out Challenge' at HatherleyManor, Messier-Dowty were well represented by members of the Regional andMilitary teams, and a good day of fun was had by all.

Many thanks to all the team members, who helped to raise over £200 for theSevern Sound Money Mountain.

International MastersHockey Tournament

I played in every England game andscored a goal 5 minutes into the secondhalf against Wales. This was thehighlight of the Tournament for me, aswell as playing against the SouthernHemisphere teams due to the physicalnature of their game (you have morechance of getting hurt!).

The “low” of the tournament was losingto New Zealand 3-0 after having 15short corners and not scoring goals fromany of them.

Trip of A Lifetime

OUR WORLD SCOUTJAMBOREE EXPERIENCEThis year has been a very eventful yearfor us Scouts. Not only is it 100 yearssince the formation of Scouting, but alsothe 21st International World ScoutJamboree was held in the UK for the firsttime since 1957. The Jamboree is onlyheld every 4 years, the venue changingeach time. Phill, my husband, and I wereaccepted as part of the UK Service Team -about 1,700 Scout Leaders - which waspart of an 8,000 strong InternationalService Team (IST), which providedvolunteer staff for the Jamboree. You canimagine the size of our campsite! Just

don’t get me started on the queuesfor the showers!

We arrived in sunny Chelmsford onTuesday 24 July, just after the floods.You may not think that camping fornearly three weeks is much of a holidaybut, as we left Tewkesbury, our waterhad been turned off and so we werequite happy to be going somewherewith flush toilets, showers and drinkingwater!

TAKING PANTO TOCHINAJim Daws recently introduced a bitof traditional Christmas Pantomimeinto China.

Oh yes he did!

A group of ex-pats including 11different nationalities put on threeperformances of Cinderella,directed by Jim’s wife Lin with helpfrom many other ex-pats fromSuzhou.

“We have done it to raise moneyfor the local immigrant workersschool, in Suzhou. This is the firsttime that Suzhou has seen panto,no one had ever done anything likethis before and it was amazing”said Jim

The Fri, Sat & Sun nightperformances had a total audienceof around 1,200 people, includingabout 200 employees and familyfrom the MD Suzhou facility.

Saturday 28 July was the OpeningCeremony. This was a fantasticexperience. To be amongst 40,000 like-minded people, of all ages, from 158countries was amazing. We started outfor the arena 1½ hours before theceremony because it took that long toget everyone in. The Duke of Kent andPrince William passed within 10 ft ofme!

For the 10 days of the Jamboree, thecampsite became the 3rd largest townin Essex! Then again, Scouting is thelargest youth organisation in the worldwith about 28 million members inpractically every country! Phill and I arevery proud to have been part of it.

Engineering Services

Mwamanga Primary School in Kenyateaches children between the age of7 and 15 yrs. A severe lack of moneymeans most classes have 70+ children(one even has 100 pupils) and theyoungest are only taught in themornings. The school has no electricityor water, and many children have a longwalk home for their lunch break. JeffJohnson, Pin Cell, made the journey tosee the school, taking with him acollection old logo’d caps, pens andfrisbees from Messier-Dowty. Jeff waswelcomed by a teacher who showedhim around the school and the childrengreeted him with a traditional song.

With no batteries or electricity, thefrisbees made ideal gifts and after Jeffhad demonstrated their use the childrenthey soon picked it up. The boys wereplaying football with a ball made out oftied carrier bags. Jeff said “the tripbrought into reality the difficulties facedin Kenyan schools. Despite this, eachchild was immaculately dressed and verypolite – a credit to their families andteachers”.

Sky DiveOn Saturday 24 November 2007,one of our Inspectors, Nick Waters,took part in a 10,000 footparachute jump to raise money forCancer Charity, Maggies Centres.Nick took part in the Tandem SkyDive along with his son CraigWaters and Brother-in-law GavinRowcraft.

Nick and his family were inspired toraise money for Maggies Centresafter his wife Jackie was treated forCancer earlier this year. The CancerCharity who help people adjust toliving with cancer and support theircarers, family and friends, areplanning to build a new drop inadvice centre next to CheltenhamGeneral’s Oncology Unit.

The Sky Dive raised an impressive£2,241.60 for Maggies Centres!

On July 7th this year the Beaufort Beagles, a keep fit and social clubfor grumpy old men of which I am a member, started and completed abicycle ride for charity. The aim was to complete the ride in as fast astime as possible.

We rode in relay, on an extremely old and heavy butcher boy’s bikefrom Bowness-on-Solway to Tynemouth. The bike was kindly loanedby Nick Brown, Master Butcher of Longlevens. We followed theHadrian’s Wall Sustrans Cycle route, a distance of 101 miles. We alltook turns and I had the honour of being the first rider on it when westarted at Bowness.

The weather was mixed to begin with, sunshine and showers, but thewind blowing in our direction was a great help. The scenery wasfantastic and the route mainly traffic free. The bike was difficult toride uphill in places (no gears) so it was pushed instead and comingdownhill in the rain was done with caution as the rod brakes weren’tthat effective.

We completed the ride in 10 hours, 33 minutes and 19 seconds andraised over £1300 for CLIC-Sargent. The winner of the guess the timecompetition, Shannon Oakes of Gloucester (10:33:00) kindly put theprize money back into the charity pot. I would like to thank thecompany and my colleagues at Messier-Dowty who sponsored me.
