There is deep elective affinity between Jewish Messianismand the Anarchist Utopias resulting mainly from three commonaspects the restorative/Utopian dimension the catastrophiccharacter of redemption and the utopia of world emancipatedfrom the bondage of law This structural homology between bothcultural universes grows on the same historical ground the neo-romantic trends in Central Europe at the dawn of the 20th centurytowards which many Jewish intellectuals were attracted

One can distinguish three groups of Central-European Jewishintelligentsia where this elective affinity can be found Semi-libertarian religious Jews Franz Rosenzweig Martin BuberGerschom Scholem Semi-Jewish religious anarchists GustavLandauer Franz Kafka Walter Benjamin Religious-atheistAnarcho-bolshevik assimilated Jews Gyrgy Lukacs Ernst TollerErnst loch

To understand this phenomena one has to examine the contradictory social and cultural conditions of the Jewish intellectuals inCentral Europe at the same time assimilated and marginaliseddeeply linked to the German culture and truly cosmopolitan etcInfluenced by Romanticism and its nostalgia of the past wholegeneration of Jewish writers is also attracted by the great revolutionary wave of the years 1917-1923
