Message from Pastor Brad Otto

“ When grace happens, Christ enters. ”

This month we celebrate Easter. Messiah’s motto is A Grace Place. You know, grace is sung about in our hymns and songs, it’s in the Bible passages we read, seminaries teach it, preachers explain it, and we hear about grace out in the world. The bank gives us a grace period, or at least we hope they do. The seedy politician falls from grace. Musicians speak of a grace note. We describe the actress as gracious and the dancer as graceful. But do we really understand it? Max Lucado says that we have settled for a wimpy grace. I believe not only have we settled for a wimpy grace, but we have settled for a fluffy grace. A fluffy grace, sure it makes you feel good for a while, but it doesn’t transform you. I mean grace just sits there and never causes anyone any problems. If someone asks you if you believe in grace, chances are you probably couldn’t say no. We’ve talked about this before, that a simple definition of grace is: God’s unmerited favor. I always say that grace is the unconditional, undeserved love of God for sinners with the power to transform lives. Grace says that you matter, that this world matters, and the resurrection is about grace, and the resurrection screams - no it shouts - all of this matters! This world matters. You matter! God’s grace does something - it should do something in your life. It should make a difference because grace changes lives. Max Lucado said once that Our God is in the business of changing hearts.

The prophet Ezekiel said: I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you,” (Ezek. 36:26). Paul says, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal. 2:20). Like that Easter egg with something hiding inside of it. That egg, that has so much potential. We too have something inside of us that gives us potential, and that is Christ. When grace happens, Christ enters. It’s hard for us to imagine this. We often think about Christ above us, next to us, in front of us, behind us, but hardly in us. And why is this? It can’t be a deficiency on Scripture’s part. Paul refers to Christ being in us 216 times and John mentions it 26 times. “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in them...” This month we will look forward to the future to expand our staff by continuing the call process for an associate pastor; we celebrate the renovation of our facilities; we celebrate the community garden that will help our community; and we look for new opportunities to expand the kingdom. All of these things are the result of God’s grace, because God’s grace makes

all things new. And all of this is to help us reach NEW people with this message we will hear and proclaim on Easter. Grace has power. Grace brought Lazarus out of the tomb, it hugged the stink out of the prodigal son, it invited a death row convict into heaven, grace forgave Peter, and this month we celebrate grace rolling the stone away from the tomb and making Christ rise from the dead- for us! Happy Easter! Christ is Risen! He has risen indeed!

o There has been a good response on Narrative Lectionary. o Pastor spoke at the Chapel at Texas Lutheran University on February 17 and

met with students considering the ministry. o Attendance on Ash Wednesday was 168. o Christ the Redeemer and MLC continue to meet to prepare a joint Reformation

celebration service. It will be on October 19 at 7pm at Christ the Redeemer. Choirs will be singing a joint piece.

o Messiah will host the Gulf Coast Synod men’s gathering. o Pastor will preach at his home congregation’s 150-year anniversary. o Call Committee update: The Call Committee continues to work on the Ministry

Site Profile. · Spring leadership retreat will be held on April 28 and 29 at Camp Allen from 7 pm on

Friday to 4 pm on Saturday. · Ministry reports from Lynette and Michelle were reviewed. · Property committee has five members: Ralph Windle, Ken Otto, Rick Musick, Earl Mote,

the church. The county would not allow an additional sign, but that we had duplicated information on the electronic and metal sign. Council approved Iglesia Cristiana to replace the metal sign with a sign for their congregation.

· The fellowship hall renovation should be complete in 1-2 weeks. We will plan a celebration and dedication for April 2 with light refreshments.

· The financials for February were reviewed and approved. Our next meeting will be April 9, 2017 after the third service. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me (832-334-9279) or e-mail me ([email protected]). God’s blessings to you and yours. Bill McNeese Council President

Chancel Choir

Messiah's Chancel Choir is a group of adults and High School students who help lead worship at the 8:00 Sunday morning service, and the 10:45 service. The Chancel Choir sings at least twice a month. Our rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 in the upstairs choir loft of the sanctuary. The Chancel Choir is open to anyone willing to lift their voices to the Lord. Come make a joyful noise!

If you would like information please contact our music director Andrew Webb.

JuBELLation

juBELLation is Messiah's adult and youth bell ensemble which helps lead worship one time each month. They provide a prelude during the 8:00am and the 10:45 services. juBELLation rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 in room 1112. Whether you can read music or not, you can play bells. juBELLation is open to anyone willing to learn how to ring. Stop by and observe a rehearsal or connect with Andrew if you have more questions and/or interest in ringing.

Special Music

Special musical offerings are very important to the congregation of Messiah. Whether you can sing or play an instrument, this could be for you. Outreach Service Sunday May 21, 2017

On Sunday, May 21st Messiah members will have the opportunity to go out into the community to serve others.

Project one will be providing and distributing fresh vegetables and fruit to a senior apartment complex. Paper piggy banks will soon be sent home with our children to help collect their family donations. We encourage families to talk about this service, start saving your coins and then let your children go shopping with you to buy the produce. We will distribute the food and play Bingo on that Sunday. Families are welcome to join in the fun at Manor at Jersey Village located on Castlebridge Drive.

Project two will be a hotdog lunch at the Andover Apartments located on Cypress North Houston. Family fun for all with food, face painting and music!

Project three will be a community service for one or more clients of Cypress Assistance Ministries. This might include painting, cleaning, lawn care, etc.

More information to come so watch your bulletin for updates!

Community Garden

Our first workday will be Saturday April 1st where we will be sorting Caladium bulbs in order to distribute on Sunday April 2nd and 9th. We will also be planting the over 200 bulbs that have been donated to Messiah!

Tomatoes, Peppers and Sweet Potatoes are already growing, anxiously awaiting the bed construction! The ground was much lower than anticipated so we needed more dirt but the rainy weather just didn’t help our cause! Finally we have what we need and the beds are soon to be constructed and ready for planting. If you would like to help with the garden, please contact Mike Strickler at [email protected].

Cypress Assistance Ministries

We continue to work in the food pantry on Monday mornings from 10-12 noon. This is a fun time sorting cans of food by type and expiration dates. If interested just show up at the food pantry located on the corner of Huffmeister and Fleur De Lis Blvd or contact Kristie Musick at 713-816-8708.

PS: we usually do not work the 3rd Monday of the month as that is special delivery day and space is limited!

Now that the Fellowship Hall is finished we will once again start collecting frozen meat for CAM. Both small portions and larger portions are needed. Just put it in the small freezer marked CAM located in the fellowship hall. If you forget, like I do, simply put a check in the offering plate marked Meat for CAM. THANK YOU!

If you are interested in or have questions about any

of the above , please contact Kristie Musick at

[email protected]

Lamkin news

Call Committee News The Call Committee is making progress on the Ministry Site Profile. Please watch for an email regarding a congregational survey that you should receive before Spring Break (mid March). The Call Committee wants to hear the congregation's feedback so that we can call an Associate Minister who meets the needs of our congregation. Your input is extremely valuable. Please continue to keep the Call Committee in your prayers as we seek God's will in our calling of an Associate Minister for Messiah.

Worship is a time to give thanks to God for all that God does for us. Worship isn’t so much about us as it is about God. If there is one thing Lutherans aren’t good at it is sharing how God is working in our lives. There’s an old word for this- testimonial. We don’t do this very well, but it is an important part of what worship should be about. While giving thanks to God through song, the word and our offerings, we should also stop and hear from people about how the ministry of Messiah has impacted them and hear these wonderful God stories. If you would be willing to share your testimonial either in front on a Sunday or via video, please check this off on your connection card on Sunday. We want to celebrate with you. We want to lift off the ministry of Messiah with you. We want to hear your story, which is ultimately God’s story!

God’s Story: The Stories for April

TAGS—IT’S ALL ABOUT CONNECTING After five weeks of Ministry Celebration Sundays when church attendees were educated and entertained by the various ministry teams, it is now time for Messiah’s annual TAGS (Time and Gift Survey). You can complete the TAGS online at Messiah’s website, www.messiahlc.org under the Connect tab, “How do I get involved?”

Or, paper copies are available at the Welcome Center at church. TAGS will take 10-15 minutes to complete, and the electronic method sends the TAGS directly to Messiah. Please return all TAGS by April 16 if possible. There will be a basket at church for the completed paper copies. What do TAGS do? TAGS indicate to Messiah’s ministry leaders that you are interested in their ministry, or maybe you just want some more information. Either way, the TAGS is your friend in connecting you with the ministry to which you feel called. Have questions? Contact Lynette Bartel, Deacon, for help and information.

Life Groups 1. What are Life Groups? Life groups are small groups (6 to 12 people) that gather weekly in a variety of times and locations, including people’s homes, to develop stronger relationships with God and each other. 2. What will Life Groups talk about? a. Life groups will talk about their weeks and what is happening in their lives. Obviously, no one is forced to share, and initially the sharing might be simple everyday sorts of things. b. Life groups will discuss some questions from the previous Sunday’s sermon texts. The sermon, as always, is available at www.messiahlc.org. The discussion/study questions for the week will also be available at www.messiahlc.org and will also be published each Sunday in the bulletin. This means that some preparation is required for Life Groups, but it will not be heavy duty nor require a lot of prep time. c. There will be prayer time at every Life Group, silent or spoken, your choice. d. There will be an opportunity in each Life Group session (6-12 weeks) to take your faith to the world—a service project that your group takes on together or in combination with another group.

3. When will Life Groups happen? a. This is the second Life Group session in 2017 and a great time for new folks to give a group a try. b. As to when individual groups meet, that will be set by the group leader, and folks can sign up to the group that best fits their schedule or their interests. Some will happen during the day, some on weeknights. Some may already be meeting and will simply re-focus their group a bit. Messiah will begin signups for the current session on Sunday, April 9 online at www.messiahlc.org/life-groups There are NO registration costs for Life Groups. Need assistance? Contact Lynette Bartel at

[email protected] . 4. Who are the Life Group leaders? The leaders are recruited among Messiah’s membership. Each group will be identified by a target demographic or by geographic location, but almost all the groups are open to anyone who finds the time slot convenient. The gifts needed to be a leader are: hospitality, the ability to lead a discussion, and the gift of sincere caring for group members. Some organizational skills are needed, but nothing extreme. A group leader does not need to be a Bible scholar. Are you being called to be a small group leader or assist a small group leader? Do you have a desire to start a group? Contact Lynette at [email protected] .

Weeks of April 23 through May 28.

Register online at www.messiahlc.org/life-groups

or assisted registration on the deck after worship, beginning April 9.

Brochures listing this session’s group choices will be available at that time.

Youth and Family

High School this MONTH April 2-CROWN: CROWN is a great time to come together, hang out, worship together, and then talk about our faith and how we are growing as Disciples of Christ. Come and join us each week. April 5-Fish Fry Fundraiser: Bubba and Connie Barnett have graciously donated all the fish, hushpuppies and cole slaw to feed everyone that night. We are asked to bring drinks (sweet or unsweet tea) or desserts to share. We will provide all the paper goods as well. If you are going on the mission trip, please come and help with set up and clean up. We will begin serving at 6 pm. We need a group here between 5-5:30 pm to help with set up. April 8-Garage Sale: We will be having our annual garage sale from 8 am-12 pm. If you are attending the Mission trip this summer, you have to sign up for a shift to help with set up, selling and taking it all down. Set up will begin on Friday, April 7 at 4 pm in the parking lot. April 9-Out to lunch MOD’s Pizza (Town Lake-Barker Cypress & Tuckerton)-Let’s eat lunch together at MOD’s pizza. You get to build your own personal pizza. Families are welcome to join us. See you on Sunday. April 14-Journey to the Cross: See the article about how you can help. Hope you can help with this great interactive journey through Jesus last week. It is like Night in Bethlehem with different stations to go to at your own pace. No acting required!

April 15-Egging Fundraiser and Easter Breakfast set up: If you are going on the summer mission trip, you need to be here to help with setting up the fellowship hall for Easter breakfast and then we will have teams going out to “egg” people’s homes. Egging is hiding 12 plastic eggs in someone’s yard and placing a sign on their front door. It’s not the kind of egging you might be thinking of. We will meet at church at 4 pm to set up the fellowship hall and then leave to go egging afterwards. We need parents to help with driving. April 16-Easter Breakfast: We prepare and serve a pancake breakfast for any who would like to join us on Easter morning. If you are attending the mission trip, you need to come and help with preparing pancakes, scrambling eggs, cutting fruit, serving drinks, cooking bacon and sausage—all the fun things that go into making breakfast. We will have shifts available for you to sign up for. Check your emails for sign up sheets.

April 23-Serve at Butterfly Festival (12-2 pm): Our preschool, Chrysalis, has a large festival called Butterfly Festival where the community is invited to come enjoy games, booths, lunch and much more. We need as many people who can serve as possible. Please look for ways to sign up beforehand. April 30-IKEA Trip: Let’s go to IKEA together. We will leave from Messiah after the late service and eat at IKEA. Please bring money to buy lunch. We will look at different chairs and furniture they have as possibilities for the loft. Come join us for a fun day. We hope to be back by 3 pm.

Get rid of your stuff and help the Youth-BRING YOUR STUFF AS SOON AS YOU CAN! It’s hard to believe that Spring is just around the corner, but it is, and with it comes the age-old practice of “Spring Cleaning!” If you are one of the many de-cluttering enthusiasts who will be cleaning closets in the next few weeks, please consider donating your gently used “treasures” (NO Electronics or computers; Clothes don’t sell well, but kitchen gadgets, tools, furniture sell really well) to the youth who will be hosting a garage sale to help raise funds for their trip to Arkansas for their

mission trip this summer. The garage sale is planned for Saturday, April 8 from 8 am-12 pm. Thank you for all your help. Journey to the Cross Volunteers: Journey to the Cross is a way for you to help kids experience what Jesus experienced his last week here on earth. It is interactive for kids to carry a cross, hammer nails and so much more. Did you enjoy volunteering at Night in Bethlehem? This is just like it on a smaller scale, but we need your help. We need people to help tell the story, to help kids smash olives, to help kids understanding the Lord’s Supper or wash hands. There are a variety of ways for you to serve. If any of your students or you are interested in helping, please email [email protected] to find out more information or go online at messiahlc.org, resources to register to help. Journey to the Cross is on April 14 from 10:30 am-1:30 pm. Hope you can join us and pass the word around and invite friends and neighbors. Upcoming Milestones: Affirmation of Baptism-May 7, 2017 Blessing Graduating High School Seniors-May 21, 2017 (all services)

Youth and Family Graduating High School Senior Blessing-May 21, 2017 If you have a high school senior that is graduating this June or this past December, we want to get them each a blanket with their name on it as part of our blanket blessing with their guardians. Please email [email protected] about what name they would like on their blanket if you have not done so already. Please mark your calendar to join us on this special day at any of our worship services.

College Care Packages We like to show our love to our college students by sending them a package with all kinds of goodies for them to enjoy while they study for finals. What we need is your student’s address. You have two ways of doing this: either add the information to your connection card along with your student’s name on it or you can email Michelle the information at [email protected]. If your student received a care package this past fall, they will automatically receive one this spring. If their address has changed, please email or write on your connection card to let Michelle know.
