Have you ever felt uncomfortable living out your faith in our

world today? The values of our culture have drastically shifted over the last 25 years. This often causes us to question how to

remain faithful to the way of Jesus in sometimes an unfriendly environment.

This uncomfortable feeling is nothing new for God’s people. They often find themselves marginalized and wondering how to

live in a culture that is not very friendly to their faith. The book of Daniel deals with this in the Old Testament. Daniel, a

Hebrew, finds himself living in exile serving a king who isn’t too friendly to God’s ways. Yet, during these uncomfortable

situations, Daniel remains faithful while continuing to engage with the culture around him bearing witness to the true God.

Our new sermon series, Uncomfortable: Visions and Stories from Daniel, will go thru the book of Daniel leading us to see how to remain faithful living in our world today. I look forward

to walking with you thru this, as Jesus transforms us to be His disciples engaging in our world.

This will all kick off on Rally Day, August 11th. There will be special family activities during the Sunday School hour, as well

as a congregational picnic following our services. I hope you join us as we celebrate God working in our midst.

God’s Peace, Pastor Mark

NO Class: 9/2, 11/11, or 11/25

Activities are designed to be readily accessible to two-year- olds. We could have children from newborn to 4, depending on the group dynamics.

Our philosophy focuses on providing an environment that fosters opportunities for young children to develop social skills of sharing, helping, and interacting with each

other with support of their parents and teachers. Ultimately, it is our objective that children see themselves as special individuals created and loved by God.

Why Playgroups?

• Foster rich social experiences for children.

• Encourage children to explore their own interests while gaining opportunities to partake in diverse play and learning experiences.

• Provide parents the opportunity to share philosophies and experiences related to child rearing.

• Playgroups are fun!!

Playgroup Schedule

tivities include playdough, building blocks, and a kid-size tool kitchen

friendship, and respect.

questions or ideas!

“Feed Your Neighbor” Bring your favorite cereal. We will be taking on this challenge to help get the food pantries ready for their breakfast items. Cereal is one item that is not always provided by the feeding America warehouse. Sometimes cereal is hard to come by, but is an item that is greatly appreciated by those in need as it is costly. It would be appreciated if we can help collect boxes of cereal. The congregation is partnering with the Preschool who will have the children bring in their favorite cereal to share with those in need. Thanks for your continued support of Feed Your Neighbor.

Messiah Pinochle Fellowship We will soon be starting the 2019-2020 season. We play once a month, September thru May. Don’t have a partner, can’t play every month, would like to be a substitute? All welcomed! If you’re interested in being a part of this Christian fellowship group, please sign up on the bulletin board or contact David or Annie West 727-623-0149 or [email protected].

MESSIAH SOCIAL MINISTRY’S 2019 GRANNY’S ATTIC & YARD SALE UPDATE

“Granny” is very happy to report that $2,853 was the total of funds raised at her June 22nd sale. Many thanks to Messiah members and friends who donated the numerous and wide-ranging sale items. A sunny day, roadside signs and me-dia advertising brought a steady stream of eager shoppers to the Ministry Center during the 5 hour sale. Most importantly, we are grateful for the tireless servants who set up and staffed the event. The following individuals were key to the successful day: Beverly Fisher, Sandy Hansen-Swilley, Carolyn Breyer, Dianne Gardner, Jim Gardner, Jean Kuehn, Mary Kay Cyrus, Janet Donahue and daughters Diane and Denise, Nancy Lemke, Cathy Minardi, Jody Schweichler, Rodney Swilley, Susan Olds, Barb Packer, Wendy Huss, Sandi Windsor and both men’s, Wednesday morning Bible study groups. Thanks and praise to God for this financial blessing which will allow MESSIAH SOCIAL MINISTRY to touch more lives within our church family or through ongoing outreach opportuni-ties to the community at large.

BIBLE DRIVE FOR HOMELESS OUTREACH The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office quarterly homeless outreach has been a success and resulted in a joyful reception of Bibles. The last outreach saw many Bibles given away, so in order to be prepared for the next outreach in September, let's do another Bible drive. This time, we can target specific needs, as there have been many requests for King James versions, and especially for LARGE PRINT. I will be collecting through the end of August, please look for the large box in the narthex. We can also accept monetary donations towards buying a case, just annotate your check/envelope as designated for Bibles for homeless outreach and put in the offering plate. We share a table with Bikes for Christ at the outreach, if anyone has any bikes (in any restorable condi-tion) to donate let me know also. Contact Dale Laxton (495-7118) with any questions. Let's get God's saving Word out to the destitute and hopeless. Thank you.

FINAL DAYS of SUMMER YOUTH ACTIVITIES! Bored? Want to make the most of your time off? Join us for some

final days of summer service and fun!

August 8th Youth Serve (Grades 5-12)

Meet at Messiah at 7:15AM. We will depart for a day of serving @ Feeding Tampa Bay and spend the day sorting, stocking, and organizing donations. Closed toed shoes are a must. Wear clothes that

can get dirty. No tank tops. Parents may complete a waiver by going to https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCicLueXmq4WAFS4nYbre4Ga3FTlKY9YF118OLJLvrjEpThA/viewform Or getting a paper copy off the youth bulletin board. We will eat lunch together

and return to Messiah by 2PM. Sign up to attend. We will need additional adult /parent drivers. Lunch provided. Deadline to RSVP is August 5th.

Youth Parents (Grades 5-12)! With the start of a new school year, we need a new general emergency medical release form for EACH and EVERY student. This is good for the whole school year and any events, it just ensures we have up to date contact information and medications and health stuff and permission/decline for use in PR stuff. Forms

were emailed and snail mailed with Fall mailings during July and there are copies on the youth bulletin board in the narthex. You can email your forms to [email protected] or print and return. Thanks for your help!

Youth School Year Calendar of Events for the whole school year were also sent out with July mailings. Copies are available on the youth bulletin board

so you know (at least tentatively) what will be happening when for the school year. Take a look and see how you can get involved and help!

Attention Parents of 3rd Graders! You are invited to a special event on EITHER Thursday August 8th from 7-8PM OR Saturday August 10th from 10-11AM on the second floor of the Ministry Center in Room 202. You will have an opportunity at this event to inscribe a special Bible verse or note to your third grader in the Bible that will be presented to your child at worship on Sunday August 11. This will be a great time for the parents to get together to have a time of devotion and fellowship and to really focus in on what this Bible presentation is all about and how we can support you as parents in raising Godly children. This is mandatory for all of our third grade parents. If you would like to participate and neither of those dates work please let us know. Messiah traditionally gifts our incoming 3rd graders with Bibles on Rally Day. This

year, we would like to make this a special family milestone as a part of worship on August 11th. Please contact our Director of Family Ministry, Abby Moss, at

[email protected] or 813-961-2182 with questions.

This will be an ongoing project, so please keep us in mind this summer as you travel.

From Abby… (Not to be confused with Dear Abby,)

In July five of our high school youth, two adult chaperones, and three college young adult volunteers got to experience worship, Bible Study, service, fun, and growth with 21,000+ other LCMS youth or 23,000 participants and volunteers from around the world. We focused on Psalm 46 and our RE-AL+PRESENT+GOD. Here were some of our learnings and discoveries. REAL: The Psalmist opens chapter 46 by describing very real circumstances where everything is seemingly falling apart. In the midst of trouble, God is a refuge and strength. We unpacked the Psalms as a whole and looked at how these songs and prayers are often raw and authentic with emotion (Joy, gratitude, fear, sorrow, confession, worry, questions, grief, and awe) and how God invites us to do the same. We can be real in our troubles, doubts, failings, and joys knowing that God knows our actions and thoughts, and still loves us and desires us to draw closer to Him. As Jesus says in John 16:33, “’I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’” Jesus is really with us and that can give us peace no matter what takes place around us. He alone brings peace to situations that don’t seem like they can ever be peaceful and ultimately promises peace of perfect heaven. PRESENT: In Psalm 46:4-7, we see God’s presence. It is always amongst His people. Sometimes His presence may feel hidden, unwelcome, or discomforting. This may be true for enemies of God, but as His children, we can take comfort in His presence and love and forgiveness in Christ. No matter what we face, God’s presence is strength and refuge. God is with us in His Word, sacrament, worship, and in His people, the Church. God uses us, as His followers to remind one another of His presence. We can be His hands and feet by being present for one another, just as God is present with us. Jesus (and Him in communion bread and wine) is our tangible reminder that God is present with us. As John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” GOD: God is God. With that comes the acknowledgment, that I am not. God is unique and powerful. He is not to be messed with, will judge, and should be awed and feared. God of the universe is also personal. He is gracious and for us in Jesus. Because of His love and forgiveness, we can trust Him. God is capable of mighty and awesome things: creation, desolation, and raising us from death. He in-vites us to, “Be still” and rest in His power as God. God is with us and is our protection no matter what we face. Ultimately, we trust God for his promises of eternal life and salvation, and the day He will restore all and there will be no more sickness, death, or sadness. The God of the universe is also Jesus of Mark 4:35-41 who calms the storm and cares for the disciples. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, God alone is to be feared and trusted because He has demonstrated His power, love, and forgiveness. He invites us to live assured of His protection and presence. We hope this gives you a glimpse of what we encountered unpacking our REAL + PRESENT + GOD. After a week of discovering these truths, God put our group in a place to share this with a local in Minneapolis named Oscar. As we shared part of our lunch, Oscar wanted to know why we were there and then shared some of his own questions and doubts about if God was real and present for him. As a group, we were able to be real with him, present with him, and to point him to God. We prayed togeth-er, sang together, and were able to bless him with one of our Bibles inscribed with words of encour-agement and favorite verses. Just as we experienced our REAL+PRESENT+GOD, God allowed us to do the same for one another. May we all strive to know and make God known.

Consider Helping with our Sunday School this fall: We are recruiting teachers and assistants for the 2019-2020 school year starting August 11, 2019 and ending May 24, 2020. Please pray about your involvement to volunteer to be a Sunday School teacher or assistant. Why should you get involved? Many teachers, year after year, keep returning to teach our children the Bible. We need some new adult teachers/helpers to commit to teaching for the coming year. We need enthusiastic participation by our adults if we are to remain a Bible based church. How can members know we are growing to touch lives if we are complacent about the Word of God? Being a teacher is partaking in a needed ministry right here in the mission field. Being a teacher allows you to give back of the salvation that you believe. Being a teacher causes an impact on your students to be moved by the lesson and to have fun and fellowship in the classroom. Pray about being a teacher or assistant. Can’t help every week? No problem! While we love consistency, curriculum is set up with some flexibility so that you can help every week, for a series of weeks, or even one Sun-day a month (like every 3rd Sunday). Why would you want to be a Sunday School teacher or helper?

It is our duty and responsibility to teach our children the Word of God.

It is a joy and privilege and it is fun and exciting to minister the Word.

The Word, once administered, will not return void.

Sunday School is a fundamental ministry of the congregation; we would not be a Bible based church without it.

Teachers and assistants become evangelists by proclaiming the Word.

By preparing the lessons, you become knowledgeable of the Bible.

Teachers and assistants leave a lifelong lasting impression on their students.

Teaching Sunday School puts your faith into action.

Plus, it is a lot of fun!

We are especially looking for help with our two year old class, our 1st-4th grade class, and our middle school class. It is required that all teachers and helpers attend a child abuse preven-tion seminar. Our upcoming training dates are August 12,15, 0r 22 @ 7:00 p.m. or Saturday, August 17th @ 10:00 a.m. Can we count on you? Please sign up today on the bulletin board in the Narthex. Please join this ministry: We must be in the Word in order to Grow to Touch Lives. Talk to Ernie Munzen, Abby Moss, or Pastor Mark for more information or with questions.
