The Planned Giving committee is delighted to report that parishioners are calling to let the committee know that a gift to St. James is in their wills. Please let the committee know if you have already made a designated gift to St. James in your will, as the committee would like to include your names in the St. James Legacy Society.

We would like to honor your gift according to your wishes: if you would prefer not to have your name included in the St. James Legacy Society list, or to be listed anonymously, please let the committee know. A call or email to Helen Campbell will help the committee keep their records up to date. Helen Campbell, 387-5141 or [email protected].

bags via food truck to various points in the city to the homeless population, along with helping develop Mobile Loaves and Fishes community garden. Created in 1998, Mobile Loaves and Fishes prides itself on improving conditions for the Austin community by providing food and clothing for the homeless.

Later in the week, the group collaborated with the organization Caritas of Austin, which focuses primarily on diminishing poverty and homelessness in the city.

For most of the group, it was the first time for them to experience all of the wonderful and eclectic opportunities Austin has to offer. The group was able to visit multiple sites such as the Castle Hill Graffiti Wall, a former condo plot which is now home to countless pieces of graffiti art, the Ann W. Richards Congress bridge, also known as the “bat bridge,” and were able to cool off by kayaking around the local lakes. The group loved the experience they had within the city and were able to, as the locals say, successfully “keep Austin weird.”

St. James Girls Choir Announces 2014-2015 Season Auditions

Continuing one of the finest Anglican choral traditions, St. James is delighted to announce the second season of the St. James Girls Choir, which will begin rehearsals in mid-August.

The choir is open to girls who will be in grades five through ten in the 2014-2015 school year. The choir’s director, Tricia Delony, has a great year planned for this wonderful group.

Mrs. Delony has over 30 years experience teaching elementary and middle school students in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, and has recently joined the staff at Episcopal School. She has had many award-winning choirs full of students whose lives were changed through the process of making music with peers they might never have had the chance to know had they not been in choir together.

Our recruiting focus is toward girls in the parish family, however, the choir is also open to girls in the greater Baton Rouge area who may come from other faith traditions and congregations. The St.

James Girls Choir offers a unique and exciting opportunity to introduce our young ladies of St. James, and Baton Rouge, to the glorious music and traditions of The Episcopal Church.

Although no prior musical training is required, it is important that this be something the chorister wants to do and that she is keenly interested in ensemble singing and is willing to do the work to develop her skills. This is a choir for girls who love to sing! The choir will sing at two nine o’clock services each month, and will rehearse every Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the choir room. Security officers are on site, and wireless access is

available for waiting parents and siblings.

Please contact Tricia Delony at [email protected], or on her cell phone at 225-936-0523 for more information on auditions, requirements, and scholarship opportunities. Pictured, above, is the Virginia Girls Choir based at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Rich-mond. Click the photo to learn more about the exciting opportunities afforded young girls in a high-quality musical ensemble.

Trinity Institute: Save the Date!

Creating Common Good: January 22-24, 2015

Economic inequality in the United States is a pervasive, overwhelming issue. Our society is increasingly made up of have and have-nots, and this consistently widening gap represents a condition decried by the prophets, forcefully addressed by Jesus, and singled out by a number of contemporary voices in economics and public policy as a serious but correctable obstacle to human thriving.

Many of us worry that we are complicit in a system that perpetuates economic inequality, and we feel uncomfortable and tense because this complicity goes against our deeply held Christian values about social justice. Many avoid the topic because taking a stand against economic inequality is difficult, and we don’t know what we can do – as individuals and as the Church – to effect change in a broken system.

The Trinity Institute program, provided by the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation in live simulcast, will include the Most Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury; Cornel West; and Robert Reich, among other. Read more at http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/trinity-institute/2015/what%E2%80%99s-ti2015.

Get Busy Reading: The Bad Girls Book Club Resumes Soon! You have plenty of time to read “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd.

This historical novel is about the relationship between a slave, Handful, and the daughter of slave owners, Sarah Grimké, in antebellum Charleston.

While this is strictly a novel, Sarah Grimké was an actual early abolitionist and feminist whose upbringing in a slaveholding Southern family made her voice particularly controversial. Handful’s mamma, who tells her life story with needle and thread, is based on quilter Harriet Powers, an African American born into slavery in 1837.

Graduates of EfM - Join Us!If you have graduated from the four year program of Education for Ministry offered by The University School of the South at Sewanee, you are invited to join us on the third Thursday of the month from noon until 1:30 p.m. as we gather at various locations through the year for a time of spiritual feeding.

The four year program is rich with spiritual and intellectual food. Periodic gathering of graduates for a little “renewal and refreshments” can be rewarding.

Because this gathering is during the lunch hour, you are invited to bring a bag lunch. You do not have to attend every meeting. Come when you can. All we ask is that you respond to the monthly email meeting reminder, so the host(ess) and group do know whether to expect you!

The usual format is that one of the group volunteers to present a brief lesson followed by a hearty group discussion. Any format and topic will do — whatever is on your heart at the time.

The most important thing is that we get to use our theological reflection skills,

our lifetime experiences, our knowledge of the Bible and tradition to hold a rich discussion about the chosen subject. This is a tradition we have followed for four

years in EfM. We don’t want it to vanish.

If you, or another EfM grad you know, may be interested in meeting this group on the third Thursday of the month at noon, please contact Nancy Jo Poirrier, at [email protected], at home at 225-926-1679, or on her cell phone: 225-603-7921.

The Parlor Flowers GuildManette Sammons is getting an early start on the Ministries Fair, and issuing an invitation now to any who might be interested in joining the Parlor Flowers Guild!

If you enjoy flower arranging, this could be a ministry you would enjoy. Depending on how many join this group, you will be asked to create a fresh arrangement of flowers for the Parish Hall Parlor on a schedule of about once every six to 10 weeks. Fellow members have been good to swap around if there are date conflicts.

The new list of assignments will begin on Sunday, September 28. To be put on the roster, please contact Manette Sammons at [email protected], at home at 225-766-1467, or cell number 225-937-5549.

InvItes You to explore our lIfe and MInIstrIes Messenger

The

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.

Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
