Church of the Ascension to St. Francis by way of St. James
Births Jane Margaret Achorn was born on Wednesday, August 22,
2018, the first child of Emma and Tray Achorn. Jane Margaret arrived weighing seven pounds, seven ounces.
Baptisms Emery Elizabeth Agnew, infant daughter of Jodi Faught
Agnew and Bryson Sartain Agnew, was baptized on Sunday, September 2, 2018.
Parish Family
In 1830, Donaldsonville was the capital of the state of Louisiana. Leonidas Polk, the first Episcopal bishop of Louisiana suggested a congregation in Donaldsonville. During the next ten years, poor participation prompted Bishop Polk to describe the parish as “very small and weak.” However, by 1851 there seemed to be enough interest for the church to be admitted to the Council of Episcopal churches and prompted Henry Johnson to donate land with a house and a school on it that was envisioned to beome the rectory and a parochial school. Church services were to remain at the Court House. The official membership was 19 families with a flourishing Sunday school including children from several Protestant denominations. During the next 40 years, regretfully there was a pattern of short terms for clergy serving Church of the Ascension.
Church of the Ascension moved to its current location in 1905, from Nicholls and Railroad Avenue. There were 74 communicants and the church fulfilled its financial obligation to the diocese. The post-depression and World War II era saw a decline in membership. In 1987, Ascension was made a mission station of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Baton Rouge, and by 2012, it became clear that a congregation no longer existed and the church was deconsecrated.
The church building, rural Gothic style with decorated verge board, was well maintained early in its life. Ten stained glass windows, some with double-hung sashes, were installed in 1886. They were made by Hauser Studio of Wenona, Minnesota.
After its deconsecration, the windows were removed for preservation prior to sale of the church property and were stored at St. James Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, which had sponsored the cost of their removal.
Following the devastating flood of August 2016, the windows were donated to St. Francis Episcopal Church, Denham Springs, with the intention of the windows being installed and rededicated to adorn the new St. Francis church building. As of September 2018, the first of the windows is being sized and framed in. You can read more about the windows and see close-ups at www.stfrands.org/mojoportal/stained-glass-windows.
Annie will speak on Spiritual Strength for Parenting: Intertwining the gift of God’s abundance for you as a parent with practical approaches for family-strengthening spiritual practices.
Sunday, November 11 - Eydie Comeaux is an author, educator, professional trainer and speaker, wife of an Episcopal priest, mother of six sons, and with “eight grandkids and counting!” The author of A Parent’s Book of Uncommon Prayer, Eydie navigates the often-muddy waters of childhood, adolescence, children turned young adults, in-laws, and blending families. She will speak on Parenting Parables: The Power of Positivity and Prayer.
The series will run from 9:15 until 10:15 a.m. each of these Sunday mornings, and meet on the third floor of Bishops Hall. This is a new area to the Sunday morning class rotation list. Stairs are located at the northeast and southeast corners of Bishops Hall, and the elevator is along the east wall (behind the stage). Coffee will be ready and waiting.

The Day School reports the two-year-old program is up and running and school contracts are within the budgeted amount.
Senior warden Gerry Sulzer presented status reports on organ restoration with ongoing investigation, interviews, and research. A Request for Proposal on interior work has been prepared so that a bid design and documents can be prepared for further interior work, including the organ work, HVAC management, improved access and fire suppression, electrical upgrades, plaster repair, flooring/carpeting, trim
and millwork, and cleaning/painting. He noted restoration work on Killgore Hall continues, as do insurance negotiations.
Fr Duncan shared exciting attendance numbers to the beginning of the program year on September 9. Caroline Whitley has been contracted as a Youth Assistant to assist with planning and programming.
The clergy and music staff are compiling a liturgical customary (plan for the year), that makes each liturgical season distinct, yet preserves our rich tradition. Well-known hymns will be emphasized at the 10:30 service to encourage congregational singing.
The vestry was reminded of the Diocesan Convention, scheduled October 26-27, at St. Martin’s School, Metairie, and delegate interest and potential attendance was discussed. Fr. Duncan and Gerry Sulzer were granted authority to fill remaining delegate positions.
Fr. Duncan presented the timeline for the fall Annual Giving campaign.

If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick up a paper copy at church and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
23rd Annual Women’s Creative Process Retreat: CPR for the Soul
Solomon Episcopal Conference Center — October 25-28
“Heart Work for Hard Times”In these hard times, those of us committed to a spiritual path, must create practices to keep us on the path. One important practice is to ask ourselves questions — often over and over again — because our answers change and deepen over time.
This practice, along with life’s experiences and our evolving relationship with our Creator removes layers, revealing to us our questions, posed by Wayne Muller, in his book, How Then, Shall I Live?
• Who am I, really?• What do I love?• How shall I live, knowing I will die?• What is my gift to the family of this Earth?
We invite you to come explore these timeless questions with us, through worship, prayer, silence, deep listening circles, music, sacred movement, art, writing, dreams, body work, fun and more. Please join us for this life-giving retreat weekend, led by the Rev. Mary Hardy at the Solomon Episcopal Conference Center.
Fees, payable by check to “Christ Episcopal Church” and mailed to Jill Melancon, 132 Abita Oaks Loop, Abita Springs, LA 70420, are $421 for single room; $355 for double/triple room, covering room and board from dinner Thursday, through the closing at 11:30 a.m., Sunday. Contact Lisa Holden at [email protected] for general information, or Jill Melancon, [email protected] with registration questions.
