Dear Friend,At this time of the year the

nation tends to go mad for varioussporting fixtures. This Summer in church at Hawkshaw we will be enjoying our annualHoliday club called “Mountaineers”, which is based on the sermon on the mount. Ifthese seem like two slightly disparate sentences, let me explain… I have recently beenreading Chris Bonnington’s life biography, ‘Ascent’. In it, he describes both his battlewith mountain after mountain, notably several attempts on Everest and otherHimalayan peaks, and also the extreme attrition rate of his band of friends in theextreme mountaineering sector. When I read that I am amazed at the sheerdetermination that kept them all going despite the risks, and the amazing physical featsthey achieved as a result.

But when we read Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the mount, it too is an amazingvoice of defiance against the mighty Roman empire, against the religious establishmentand against the spiritual hold of the devil in the world. And his band of followerssuffered a similarly atrocious survival rate as they listened, followed and proclaimedthe new message that Jesus brought to humanity.

The sporting world tends to understand commitment a lot better today than much ofthe church in our country. The commitment to train day in, day out, in season and outof season. And yet that is exactly what the new testament instructs Christians to do.

We are called to be mountaineers who will scale the mountain-top-heights of ourfaith and of God’s plans for our lives, rather than to be content with a spiritual potteraround the garden and occasional Sunday stroll.

So can I urge you simply to re-read the Sermon on the Mount – Matthew chapters5-8 – and as you do so, ask God to take you to a taller hill or a higher place in yourwalk with him. This is a gentle start towards a deeper spiritual discipline that will helpyour faith to grow deeper in the weeks ahead.

With every Blessing,Paul

[ Psalm 91 ] Whoever dwells inthe shelter of the Most Highwill rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

4 Bad and unkind thoughts are like germs, so do what you can to build up your immunity.

31st JulySt Joseph of Arimatheathe man who buriedJesusHave you ever suffered from gossip? Everdiscovered that people are saying some reallywild things about you? If so, Joseph ofArimathea would understand – andsympathise with you. This decent, godlyman of the gospels seems to have fired theimaginations of all sorts of odd people downthe centuries.

Joseph was a rich, prominent member ofthe ruling Jewish council – the Sanhedrin.Mark’s gospel describes him as having been‘waiting for the kingdom of God’ for years, and even being a secret disciple of Jesus. Heplayed no part in the trial or crucifixion.

When Jesus was pronounced dead, Josephhad the seniority needed to approach Pilatefor the body – and get it. Near to whereJesus had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, cut deep in therock. Joseph himself already owned it – andit was still new and empty. So Joseph laidJesus there, and wrapped him in a linen cloth, according to Jewish burial custom. Josephdid not bury Jesus alone - Nicodemus helpedhim, while some women who had followedJesus trailed miserably behind.

Matthew tells us that the last thing Josephdid for Jesus was to sadly roll a big stone

across the entrance to the tomb, and then goaway. With that, Joseph passes out of history- and into legend. For in the centuries thatfollowed, Joseph was swept up into theLegend of the Holy Grail, the Legend ofGlastonbury, and even bits of the Arthurianlegends. It was said that the Holy Thorn, which flowers at Christmas, had sprung fromhis staff.

The mind boggles at what Joseph wouldhave made of it all. One suspects he wouldhave preferred to stick to the simple, but farbetter, true story: as having had the immense, unique privilege of laying the body of JesusChrist in the tomb. Even if Jesus didn’t stayvery long!

Don’t know nothin’When Columbus started out, he didn’t know where he was going. When he got there, he

didn’t know where he was. When he got back, he didn’t know where he had been. And he didit all on other people’s money. Can’t help thinking that Columbus reminds me of someteenagers who go on family holidays…

5If you tell people to give and give till it hurts, you may find they are extremely sensitive to pain.

Gosh, I was so pleased at the June workingparty when we achieved so much. I had somany tasks planned in my head and couldn’tbelieve it when enough helpers came along toget them all done. Thank you so much toeveryone for your hard work and goodcompany.

We all worked together to prepare the areafor the garden party the following weekend. As the season has moved from Spring toSummer there is even more colour andinterest throughout the area. Everything isflourishing, giving pleasure and lifting spirits. We are so pleased.

The garden continues to be well used andenjoyed by many varied groups of people.Don’t forget to come and have a game ofBoules and try your hand at music or hoopla. There may even be a little bit of weaving tobe done soon. It is not all work and no play.

6 In the courtroom of life we are called to be witnesses, not judges

Modern-dayNoah's arkScientists are building a futuristic version ofNoah's ark in order to store animals' DNA sothey can be brought back to life if theybecome extinct. Experts in the UK claim thiscould be achieved if cells, tissue and DNA ofevery animal from around the world arepreserved at temperatures of -196C in theCryoArks Biobank.

Professor Mike Bruford at CardiffUniversity is leading the creation of theCryoArks Biobank. He told The NaturalHistory Museum: "Collections of tissue andDNA from laboratories, zoos, aquariums andmuseums will come together under a singlestructure, providing us with an unparalleledopportunity to better manage and share thevast amount of genetic material we have. "Itwill allow researchers and conservationists toaccess material they never thought existed -including samples from wild populations andanimals that are now extinct. CryoArks ismaking a step change in the way that genetic

material is curated, and is making it availableto more scientists."

The new £1-million biobank will be thefirst national bank of frozen animal materialin the country. Mike Bruford said he hopedextracting and freezing DNA from as manythreatened species as possible would providesome hope for the future, serving as a 'back-up copy of a species' via their DNA, shouldthe worst happen.

7It is far better to be roughly right than precisely wrong.

A PlasticRevolutionThe recent Blue Planet II series exposed justhow much plastic waste is an issue in ourseas. The Prime Minister has called plasticwaste ‘one of the great environmentalscourges of our time.’ The best estimatessuggest 10 million tonnes of plastic ends upin our oceans, contaminating and killing sealife. How should we view this issue from aChristian perspective?

When God created the universe, He saw‘everything He had made, and indeed, it wasvery good.’ (Genesis 1:31). He calls us toshare in His care of creation: ‘Be fruitful andincrease in number; fill the earth and subdueit. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birdsof the air and over every living thing thatmoves on the ground.’ (Genesis 1:28). Ourrule over living creatures is not an excuse toexploit them in a selfish way. As those whomade in the image of God, we are entrusted tocare for them with responsibility andtrustworthiness.

Why do the sea creatures being killed byplastic matter? Because of human rebellionagainst God (see Genesis 3), our relationshipwith God and His creation was damaged. Nolonger do we live with living creatures inharmony and interdependence. Yet after theflood, when Noah rescued the animals in theark, they are included in God’s everlastingpromise to protect the earth: ‘I now establishmy covenant with you and with yourdescendants after you, and with every livingcreature that was with you.’ (Genesis 9:9,10).This also points to God’s cosmic plan torestore all creation to Himself.

What is our response to be? Where is Godcalling us, as His people, in this time andplace, to make a stand in protecting Hiscreation? Time for a plastic revolution?

A vicar’s wife took a random call from a salesman seeking finance business. He asked,"Do you have a second mortgage on your home?"

The lady replied “No”.The salesman then asked her, "Would you like to

consolidate all your debts?"She replied, "I really don't have any debts."Being rather persistent, the salesman then asked,

"How about freeing up cash for homeimprovements?"

Feeling rather irritated by this time, she said, "Idon't need any as some were done just recently and settled in cash.

There was a brief silence, and then the caller asked, "Are you looking for a husband?"

8 Justice takes effect when your children have children of their own.

The journey toSalford RoyalWhat a day!I'm ready and waiting for the transport at11am, 2 hours before my appointment asdecreed by the ambulance service. It is a taxitoday. ( A good thing I am not in mywheelchair which has a high back and wouldnot fit in) It arrives at 11.40 am. Plenty oftime to get to Salford Royal. D. isaccompanying as my carer. D requests for theradio to be on a music channel

I thought I knew the different routes fromhere to there having had earlier trips, but afterfiddling with his satnav our very pleasantchatty driver from Rochdale, decided on theshortest route. ( At this point those of youabove a certain age might like to refer to amap of the area. I love them and enjoynavigating). We take the route throughRammy and past the M66 entrance. Not thatroute then.

On into Bury and we're going to the theHeap Bridge motorway entrance. No! Past themarket to the “Bury Tech” junction, where weturn left. There are several coaches parked upas it's market day in Bury and a very popularplace for day trips. We turn right towardsManchester Road and over the bumps. Left.onto Manchester Road past Holy Cross withall the extensions made since it became partof a university. We hit traffic and crawl all theway to the junction at Sunny Bank and theUnsworth Estate. Road works with trafficlights have caused the queue. Onwards now toWhitefield. 200yds before the junction withRadcliffe Rd our driver turns right into apetrol station!! It is a card system payment

and he does not seem to know his code.Eventually he gets in the taxi where we haveto turn right again across the traffic. We crawlagain through Whitefield up to the nextjunction with the M60, perhaps we'll now useit, but no. We crawl on through to the road toAgecroft and turn right. At last we will take afamiliar route to the East Lancs Road.

Listening to Radio Manchester and trafficnews, we reach Lancaster Road and turn leftonto it. I anticipate we will go the full lengthof it to the lights on the Eccles Rd. No!

200yds from the lights we turn right into aminor road, over humps, weaving our way toan exit onto the Eccles Rd. which has notraffic lights and we are turning right.Fortunately it isn't busy and there's not muchof a queue to enter the drop off area of thehospital.

Our courteous driver wheels me to themain foyer where D. takes over. 1.06pmPerhaps the clinic is running late and we'll beOK.

To be continued . . . .

The WindrushGeneration atworship

The significant impact of the so-called“Windrush Generation” (those arriving in theUK between1948 and 1971fromCaribbeancountries ofJamaica,Trinidad andTobago andother islands) and other Commonwealthnationals from Africa, India and Pakistan hasplayed a major role in shaping and creatingmodern Britain. (The phrase is a reference tothe ship MV Empire Windrush, which

arrived at Tilbury Docks, Essex, on 22nd June1948, bringing workers to the UK as aresponse to our post-war labour shortages. The ship carried 492 passengers, many ofthem children).

But what kind of Christian impact has theWindrush Generation made? Usually calledBlack-Majority Churches (BMCs), there areprobably at least 75 different BMCdenominations in the UK in 2018, totalling atleast 4,200 churches. The largest of the 75Pentecostal churches, (not all necessarilyBMC), given in UK Church Statistics, include:

Redeemed Christian Church of God(68,000); Elim Pentecostal Church (68,000);Assemblies of God (49,000); New TestamentChurch of God and Associated churches(16,000); Hillsong (14,000); KingswayInternational Christian Centre [KICC](12,000 in Chatham alone).

Sometimes the majority only means that all the fools are on the same side.

Beware!August is amonth whenwars tend tostart. Forexample, both the Firstand Second World Wars erupted in themonth of August. Also, on 13th August1961, East Germany’s Communist regimebuilt the Berlin Wall, separating the city’seastern and western sectors. Then on 20thAugust 1968, tanks invaded and crushedCzechoslovakia, ending the ‘Prague Spring’.And on 19th August 1991, a clique of eightCommunist hard-liners overthrew thereformist President Gorbachev in a coup toshore up the sagging Soviet State. (Itcollapsed three days later.) More recently, even the Russian/Georgian conflict of 2008began in August.

So – August may be the holiday month, but it seems when leaders go on holiday, badthings happen.

Page 10: Messenger - holcombehawkshaw.org · Parish of Holcombe and Hawkshaw. June 2018 Messenger Loving God, loving neighbours; sharing Jesus with you. The Magazine of the Parish of Holcombe

10 The modern idea of ‘roughing it’ is to holiday without internet access.

What’s YourTalent? For a number of years, talent shows havebecome popular on TV. The programmesfeature contestants, of any age, performing ashort act in front of judges in the hope ofbeing awarded a large sum of money. Thismay also lead to a new career and fame too!

These programmes feature all kinds ofpeople including singers, comedians, magicians and acrobats. Some acts are goodand entertaining while others can be odd, quirky or downright appalling! Some peoplereveal a talent, while others don’t. Some havea big ego or an inflated sense of importanceand cannot understand why they are rejected!

The Bible tells us that God is our judge. We are on show. He watches us, but He is notlooking for the slip-up, the mistake or waitingto condemn. Our God is all-loving, kind, andforgiving and looks for our potential and ispleased when we do our best. He looks tohelp us, to build us up and desires the bestfrom within us.

In the Bible, we see that God chose allmanner of ordinary individuals to fulfil His

purposes. Some made errors and committeddreadful sins, but even then God didn’tdiscard them as worthless. For example, Jesuschose a mixed bunch of disciples with allkinds of flaws, yet they became (with theexception of Judas) the ideal men to spreadthe Good News about Him.

God has a plan for each one of our lives, and we are called to be faithful in servingHim, wherever we are. By God’s grace, theHoly Spirit is given to every Christian, andthe Spirit equips us for service and Hisgreatest activity is amongst the ordinary.Under God’s influence, what we regard to benatural talents and gifts, can be enhanced andreleased by His creative energy.

Isn’t this encouraging? We don’t have toput ourselves forward and hope to be a winnerlike contestants on a TV programme. If wegive ourselves to God, He will prepare anduse us in the way that best suits our gifts andpersonalities.

Are you going abroad on holiday? Be careful which medicines you pack – what is legal in this country may NOT be legal in

the country to which you are going. And, as figures from the Health Survey for England showthat 48 per cent of us are taking prescription medication, this will affect very many of us.

Officials at the Foreign Office strongly advise you to check the rules online before youtravel. For example, even Vicks and Sudafed are illegal in some countries. In others, such asGreece, Diazepam, Tramadol, and codeine are controlled drugs. Sleeping pills, anti-anxietypills and strong painkillers require a license in Singapore.

So – do read the travel advice for each country before you go.

A man was walking down the street when he came across a man lying in the road. Hewasn't sure whether he was alive or dead, so he used his mobile phone to dial 999. He

explained the situation to the operator who askedhim where he was.

The man asked a passer-by the name of theroad. "I’m outside the church in Gomersall Way”he said.

The operator asked, "How do you spell that?"The man began. “G_O_M_M….” but couldn’tcope with the spelling, so after a pause he said,“Oh, forget it. Hang on a moment and I’ll draghim into the High Street.”

Prayer FocusThe recent Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess ofSussex (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) was watched bymillions of people worldwide. Prince Harry’s life has attractedattention over many years – not least because of the sadness oflosing his mother when he was only twelve years old.

Being in the spotlight is sometimes intrusive and the publicityunfair and uncalled for; the press often ‘feed’ their perceived audience withcontroversial headlines and photographs enticing attention.

It was good, therefore, to be given an intimate view of the wedding ceremony in St.George’s Chapel, Windsor, and to be able as individuals to form a personal opinion ofthe day. Apart from the bride and groom’s obvious love for each other, what seems tohave attracted most comment was the sermon! Delivered by a black EpiscopalianBishop, it didn’t seem to go down too well with the very traditional C. of E.

How often do we ‘switch off’ when ritual is not to our perceived taste? Perhaps itcould be a bit of a ‘wake up’ call to those who find anything other than traditionunacceptable.

Of course there is comfort in the routine and rhythm of a service we are well used to,but now and again being taken unawares out of our particular comfort zone to see andhear worship expressed differently can be good – if only to compare and contrast ouropinions in conversation with others.

Perhaps just pausing to consider the intention of differing ways of worshipping Godcan draw us closer; we are, after all, part of His family.

Father, help us remember to whom we all belong. Amen.

Gloria

Passage andPrayer

The idea is to take a few moments out during each day to meet with God.

Keep these pages for the month and refer to each day. Read a passage ofscripture and spend a little while thinking on what God might be saying to youthrough it. Then pray for whatever is on your heart and mind, but perhaps in-

clude these things happening around the parish.

Each month, a new sheet will be included in the magazine.

Passage & Prayer2nd – 8th Jul 2018

Batteries notworkingHave you ever played Blind man’s Bluff ?

You can’t see a thing and you keepbumping into things and maybe even trip oversomething?

It’s hard to walk around in the dark. So ifyou’re going to walk in the dark you need atorch to light the way.

The other day, I returned home in the darkat night . I went to open the house door withmy key. but I could not find the key hole ,butI had a torch in my pocket, so I switched it on

but the light did not come on.The batteries were not working

,so I had to struggle to findthe key hole in

the dark

. Well I guess you can’t always depend on atorch to light the way, can you?

And you know what? The Bible even saysso! It’s right here in (John 8 v12) when Jesus

says, “I am the light of the world. He whofollows me will not walk in darkness but willhave the light of life.

Just as a torch lights our way in the dark,Jesus lights our way through life and he lightsthe way to God, the Father. A torch helps tokeep us from stumbling over things in thedark, and Jesus helps to keep us fromstumbling over problems in life.

But you can’t always depend on a torch.Sometimes the batteries fail like they did forme

But you can always depend on Jesus Christto light our way through life and to light theway to the Father because Jesus is the light ofthe world.

That’s something we should pray about:Father in Heaven, thank you for

sending Jesus to be the light ofthe world. We pray that he willalways light our way throughlife and light the way to you. Wethank you in His holy name.

Amen.

HearingA man went into achurch and asked theminister to pray for hishearing. ‘Ah,certainly,’ said theminister, somewhattaken aback.

The man knelt, andthe minister placed ahand carefully on eachear. In a loud voice heasked God to help the man with his hearing. ‘Ihope that will help,’ he shouted to the man.

‘Well, we won’t know for a while,’ the manreplied softly, ‘The hearing is not until nextmonth.’

30 ‘I told the Inland Revenue I didn’t owe them a penny because I lived by the seaside.’

Breakingdown barriersSome years ago,Coventry Cathedralintroduced an entrancefee to help with theupkeep of thebuilding. Now, it isreturning to its oldpolicy of free entry ina bid to welcome morepeople. Anannouncement to thiseffect was made whenthe Archbishop ofCanterbury visited onSaturday 5th May thisyear.

John Whitcombe, the Dean of Coventrysaid “We want to takedown any barriers topeople coming in and enjoying ourextraordinary building and being caught up inthe message that it represents. We will bemaking the announcement just after our 12 oclock litany, which is a prayer we say everyday about breaking down barriers betweenpeople and nation, so it’s going to be lovely tobe able to say ‘and we are taking down thisbarrier to people being able to come in.’”

The Dean said that it feels wrong to haveto pay: “I stood by our entrance and I’vestood by the entrance of many cathedrals upand down the country as people look at thecharge and even if it quite a modest chargeit’s just not in our national mind-set to pay togo into a building of this sort. I’m reallyconfident that so many more people willcome in both from the city and from acrossthe country – people who’ve travelled acrossthe world, actually, on the whole don’t mindpaying.”

Speaking of how they will make up theloss in revenue, he said: “We have taken in alittle bit short of £100,000 each year in thelast few years since we have been chargingpeople for entry so the first thing is to say iswe are absolutely delighted to be workingwith the diocese of Coventry to make this areality and they have helped us with the set upcosts and they’re also helping with thepotential loss of revenue over the first 2 or 3years."

The Cathedral will still provide theoption to leave a donation on exit. The Deanalso said that their motivation was mission:“As the whole diocese here have reflected andprayed about this, we’ve really recognisedthat the cathedral is one of the greatestopportunities for mission that we havetogether - so it's an expression ofpartnership."

A good read

Duty: what you expect from other people. Oscar Wilde

On My Knees – rebuildingour confidence in prayerBy Chris Band, Monarch, £8.99

Life has a tendency to knock ourconfidence in prayer. In the face of persistentdifficulties, ourprayer-fuelled hopescan be overwhelmedby such despair thatwe end up “on ourknees” not so muchin prayer, as indefeat.

In this honest andengaging book,Chris Band discussesthe issues that wemay have aboutprayer but wereperhaps afraid to ask: Is prayer wastedeffort? Is God less involved in the worldthan we might wish? Is His will going to bedone anyway, whether or not we pray? Wediscover that our prayers, far from beingsquandered by God, are powerfully andconsistently used by him – both to build hisrelationship with us and to build hisKingdom through us.

This encouraging and practical book willinspire and lead each of us afresh, to be onour knees, in prayer.

When Darkness Seems MyClosest Friend – Reflections OnLife And Ministry WithDepressionBy Mark Meynell, IVP, £9.99

In this profound, unusual, and verypersonal book, MarkMeynell reflects onliving with thepainful thorn in theflesh of avulnerability todepression and howthat has affected hisview of himself andthe reactions of thosearound him as heseeks to pastor andteach while openly admitting his struggle.

He touches on many difficult subjects –the causes of depression, wrestling withsuicidal thoughts, why God allows suffering, shame and guilt, what not to say to peoplewho are depressed… and overalldemonstrates the extraordinary relevance andpower of the Bible in helping us to connectour often mysterious and confusingexperiences to God’s bigger story.

to come in.’‘On Friday there was a tap on the door. Funny sense of humour, that plumber.’

On the perils of the Ladies’ Guildannual outing…

The Rectory,St James the Least of All

My dear Nephew Darren,Once again we start the annual round of

parish treats. While the bell-ringers preferpublic houses, and the choirboys want fastfood outlets, the Ladies’ Guild are centred onlavatories. The itinerary is unchangeable:Coach drive to coffee stop and lavatory.Coach drive to luncheon stop and lavatory.Coach drive to some arbitrary attraction –provided it has a tea shop and lavatory. Coachtrip home with a lavatory (stop en route).

A sub-committee will have been hard atwork for the previous six months decidingwhere to visit. The most disastrous course ofaction is to present the group with a choice; iftwo options are provided, they will attractalmost equal numbers in favour, thus ensuringthat half of the group will rejoice in sayingthroughout the day that the other optionwould have been preferable. When it comesto decision-making, Stalin had a lot going forhim.

My predecessor in this parish left me aterrible legacy; he always accompanied theGuild on their day out, thus obliging me to dothe same. I do, however, travel equipped witharmaments. “The Times” crossword rules outany possibility of conversation for at least thefirst two hours. Three years ago, Mrs Phillipshad the audacity to look over my shoulder andgive me 12 across; she will not make thatmistake again. A brief nap after theseintellectual exertions, assuring those aroundme that I am meditating on the theme for nextSunday’s sermon, ensures a morning almostfree from having to comment on the weather,

other members of the party,or why I so rarely drop in onthe Pram Service.

The idealdestination is onewhere I havea clericalcolleague,so while theladieswanderabout, shopand analysewhy I still wear the same suit I arrived in 30years ago, we have an agreeable afternoonassassinating the characters of bishops andarchdeacons and bemoaning the standards ofa new generation of curates. After ourdifferent therapies, we all re-assemble at thecoach for the return journey.

Naturally, there is the traditional wait forthose who have forgotten where the coachpark is. As far as I am concerned, a deficit ofless than 10% should be entirely acceptable. Ican think of several husbands who may berather thankful that their wives may not beback as soon as they had feared.

Our ladies return, invigorated with thethought of all the bits of information aboutother members in the party that can bediscreetly shared over the telephone, while Iam exhausted from 12 hours of attempting tobe polite. Meanwhile the sub-committee getsa date in the diary for planning next year’slavatorial sequence.

Many thanks for all your hospitality yesterday at the EmmanuelChurch Centre; the tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits were muchappreciated.

As a group, we enjoyed the beautiful garden very much andfound much to inspire us as individuals. Those visiting for thefirst time were amazed at its existence!

We hope to make a return visit at some point, maybe at adifferent time of year, weather permitting. We also hope youenjoyed having the garden used in a very different way.
