The financial woe of our country, our church’s and for some of us personally, can easily be hopelessness-producing (We’re doomed. There is no way out of this mess.); guilt-producing (What have I done to bring this on myself, my church or my country?), and even feelings of inferiority can creep in (What’s wrong with me...with us...that we are not busting at the seams with good things happening to all of us?) Congregations from all over the United States and from all denominations submitted grant proposals. Only 150 were awarded a grant, and we are one of those. Finances are tight here at St. John’s Chapel, but all financial responsibility for our sabbatical has been lifted, and a wealth of opportunities awaits. Let’s do some Advent cleansing, freeing us from all the guilt (or assigned guilt), inferiority and hopeless feel- ings towards our additional financial responsibilities. We can do this! At Sunday Stewardship Dinner it was announced that we received 17 pledges totaling $42,168. Since then, 4 more pledges have come in totaling $18,940, bringing our total to $61,108. We are $34,397 from our goal. If the remaining 16 pledgers from last year do as good as the first 17, we will reach our goal. We can do this! Let’s take a dip in John’s dirt-removing pond so that the miracle of Christ can be born anew in our midst, and our spirits lifted to welcome a new year. I would also like to ask you to consider an alternative to traditional gift giving this Christmas. Would all of you who give me Christmas gifts instead make a contribution to the church in my name? Advent is upon us again! The decorations around the church will start going up Saturday, and completed during our Hanging of the Green service. I have always thought of Advent as a joyous time of the year—of living in anticipation of the miracle of Christ being born anew in our midst. Stephan reminds me that it is also about repen-tance. In Germany, he tells me, it is very similar to Lent in this respect. Well, I still believe it is a heck of a lot more upbeat than Lent. To me, it is about having all that goo of the year stripped away so that Christ can be born anew in our midst.

The financial woe of our country, our church’s and for some of us personally, can easily be hopelessness-producing (We’re doomed. There is no way out of this mess.);

guilt-producing (What have I done to bring this on myself, my church or my country?),

and even feelings of inferiority can creep in (What’s wrong with me...with us...that we

are not busting at the seams with good things happening to all of us?) In this state of mind, we can march right past the hope and good things Christmas offers.

If you have not noticed, a truly good thing has happened to us. We are the proud recipients of the coveted Lilly Foundation Clergy Renewal Grant. We have received all the signed documents, and this morning the check for $47,456 arrived. $14,750 of this money will make things possible for this congregation—things for which we would not normally dream. COUNCIL MINUTESCOUNCIL MINUTESCOUNCIL MINUTESCOUNCIL MINUTES Minutes of November 8, 2010

Roll Call: Members present: Christy Gra-ham, Mary Lou Datema, Jim May, Nancy Ander-son, Judith Bartell, Jeanne Kruger, Shirley Datema, Elaine Tebbenkamp, Curt Bartell, Steve Fortner. Pastor Becky was also present.

Secretary’s Minutes: (Mary Lou) Minutes from the October meeting were read and ap-proved.

Financial Secretary: (Shirley Datema) Shirley reported total deposits of $11,400.20. Average weekly offering was $2,006.80, up $22.05 from last year at this same time. Aver-age worship attendance was 67, down 12 from last October.

Treasurer: (Steve Fortner) Steve reported total expenses for the month of October were $12,001.42. Total income was $11,035.66. The money market balance now stands at $1,476.30, and at the rate we’re going will be depleted by the end of this year.

Vice-President’s report: (Judith Bartell) Evaluations of employees have been com-pleted. All received favorable reviews and, were the funds available, would all be recom-mended for raises. Judith will present a written report next month.

Board of Christian Education: (Christy) The hayride at the Datema’s was a success; there was not a hayride due to the rain, but food and fellowship were enjoyed. We were joined by associate conference minister, Dr. Marc Wessels.

Worship Committee (Judith Bartell) It was decided to condense the bulletin to one page to save on printing costs. Council also voted to discontinue the purchased children’s bulletins, which cost $188.00 yearly.

Building and Grounds: Eight people helped out at the workday on Oct 30. The gar-den and the flower bed on the south side of the building were tilled. Shrubs were trimmed and the labyrinth was cleaned out. Thanks to all who helped.

On the day of the bazaar, Lee, Karl and Corneil worked on moving the wall in the ga-

rage. They got the studs and door frame up. The sprinklers have been turned off, and Springfield Engineering is being called to work on the boiler.

Department of Spirituality: (Nancy) The new Spiritual Development class is going well.

Pastor’s Report: Stephan’s Service of Rec-ognition is set for Sunday, November 14 at 4:00. All are certainly encouraged to attend. The ser-vice will be followed by a light supper.

Stewardship letters have gone out. Stew-ardship Sunday is November 21 with a dinner following worship. At that time, the current 2011 pledged amount will be announced. All are en-couraged to get stewardship cards turned in as soon as possible.

Hanging of the Green will be November 27 at 5:00 with pizza for all who help.

No Christmas cantata is planned this year, but there will be lots of special Christmas music. A Lenten cantata will be performed instead. A Favorite Hymn Sunday is planned for December 12 and the Christmas pageant on December 19. Dec. 24 at 7:30 will be the candle light service with Holy Communion.

Pastor Becky and Deb are asking any church members who usually give them Christ-mas presents to make a gift to the church in their honor. This would be appreciated.

We should be hearing about the Lilly Endow-ment grant sometime this month.

UPDATE: On Nov. 11, we were informed that we received our Lilly Endowment Grant!!! This means that Pastor Becky’s sabbatical in 2011 will be completely funded. More information to follow in the months to come…..

Associate Pastor’s Report: (Stephan Scharf) Stephan reported that he spoke with Dr. Marc Wessels on some potential ways of reviving and continuing our youth group. Stephan had one correction from the Board of Education minutes; he said it is important that our entire church needs to decide if we are will-ing to embrace all things that include young people, including council involvement, weekly meetings of youth, worship involvement, and service projects. Stephan will be heading this effort but we need more adults involved to pro-vide support for the long term. Stephan is in the

process of contacting all youth, and has meet-ings scheduled for November 20 and Decem-ber 18 (update: the December Youth Meeting has been changed to December 11). He plans to incorporate a spiritual element to the gather-ings as well as some fun activities. We may be combining with some other area youth groups in Billings and Republic for specific ac-tivities.

Old Business: The Pastor/Parish Rela-tions committee will be meeting December 5 with Pastor Becky. This committee consists of Karl Kruger, Nancy Anderson, Jim May and Chris Trumbull.

At the December 12 congregational meet-ing, the 2011 budget will be presented for ap-proval. This will be based on the amount of pledges received. Potential budgets were mailed out with the stewardship letters.

Steve went over possible 2011 budgets proposed by the budget committee. Significant cuts may be needed based on amounts pledged.

It’s time to start looking for potential new council members to replace those going off this year. The meeting was adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer at 8:55.

Mary Lou Datema Secretary

The Guild Meeting was called to order by Vice President, Clo Ella Leverenz. Fifteen members were present and one guest. Loy gave the devotional. The minutes were read and approved. The Treasurer reported a bal-ance of $535.24. The total profit from the bake sale was not included in the report. Virginia sent cards to Flo Valentine and Virginia Shean. The nominating committee moved that the fol-lowing slate of officers be approved for new year. Loy Swanson, President; Clo Ella Lever-enz, Vice President; Esther Steinhauer, Secre-tary; and Lois Rahmoeller, Treasurer. The mo-tion carried. Esther announced that we have reached our goal for the Best Choice Labels. The officers proposed an Endowment giving roster for the Guild to approve. The proposed

benefiting organizations are; Crosslines, $100.00; Emmaus, $50.00, Children’s Home, $50.00; and Food Harvest, $100.00. Jan moved to accept the proposal and Rosemary seconded. The proposal was accepted. Pastor Becky announced that we need a representative for the church nominating committee. The De-cember 9th meeting will be a covered dish luncheon at 12:00 with the present officers pro-viding the dessert. A large donation of food was brought by members and delivered to the Salva-tion Army by Ken Swanson. Members were asked to pray for Phil Scafe, suffering from a malignant brain tumor and Tanner Brunner, who is recovering from surgery and a reaction to medication. The program consisted of mem-bers telling about their Thanksgiving memories. The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Re-freshments were served by Rosemary and Loy.

Loy Swanson Secretary

The Board of Christian Education met at the chapel on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 with the following in attendance: Pastor Becky, Chuck Andrews, Eleanor Berger, Joyce Burton and Helen Keeton.

The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $547.37.

It was reported that the Children’s Christmas Pageant will be on Sunday, December 19. On December 18 there will be a rehearsal and pizza party for those participating in the pageant from 10:00 am to 12 noon. Joyce will get pizza, pop, and gifts. Children’s Sunday School time will be used to prepare for the pageant until De-cember 19.

There will be a Youth Meeting December 11 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. There should be money available for curriculum for the youth from our budget. A request should be submit-ted. Discussion of becoming a “youth embrac-ing congregation” was tabled until a later date. A discussion was held on the scheduling of Chil-dren’s Sunday School. There seem to be some confusion.

There was also a discussion about Chil-

IT’S CROSSLINES TOYSTORE TIME!

SHARE THE JOY! SHARE A TOY!

Crosslines is anticipating a record number of parents needing help this year to provide gifts for their children for Christmas. The pantry has seen increases all year as the economy has af-fected more and more families. Let’s send a big donation of toys from our church to help the Crosslines Toystore this year! Our church is concentrating our efforts on the 0-18 month age group. Bring a new gift for a child of that age by December 12. If you have questions, contact your Crosslines Toy store coordinator, Eleanor Lockhart. 881-3811.

Values-Added Student Housing Project Underway UMHE Board Members Gary Tebbenkamp and Tona Rowett cordially invite you for light refresh-ments at an informational session just for members of St. John's Chapel about the Values-Added Student Housing Project. Pick one of three dates/times to attend at The House. Please come learn about the excitement our campus ministry has underway. The House is located at 602 S. Florence, at the intersection of Florence and Cherry, just behind Taco Bell. We'd love to see you there! Ques-tions? Contact Tona at 860-3391 or Gary at 887-1337. Thursday, December 2 at 1:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Sunday, December 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Bragging Rights…The 2010 Fall Bazaar The ladies of St. John’s Chapel have done it again. Hard work, craftiness, and su-perb baking skills netted the following that will benefit Crosslines via food donation purchases. Friendship Circle Table rentals: $410.00 Luncheon: $570.00 Nuts: $1,108.75 Trash ‘n’ Treasures: $103.50 Library Book Sales: $156.69 The Women’s Guild’s Bake Sale was a huge hit, and I will publish those numbers next month (where is that scrap of paper???), but I do know that Rosemary Witt single handedly raised $69.00 at her very own Treasures Table that was in turn donated to the Guild’s efforts. Thank you for all the hard work, and congratulations on the results of Friendship Circle’s and Women’s Guild’s fund raising efforts. And a special thanks to Lee Bartell for setting up the many tables needed for the crafts fair and luncheon (then putting everything back, perfectly, before Sunday service).

We must thank the Altar Ladies for getting eve-rything ready, week in and week out, including all that needs doing for Holy Communion. What would our chapel be without you?

Do you know the SJC Nut Wrangler? You have to thank teeny Eleanor Lockhart for wresting those big boxes of nuts around...boxes bigger than she.

And to all SJC unmentioned angels, thank you for making 2010 so very special.

From grant writers to sopranos, from weed-pullers to mowers, from cake bakers to joke tellers, acolytes, confirmands and their parents, recyclers, dishwashers, Council Members, and many more: you are invaluable to our chapel and irreplaceable.

Thank you for all that you do. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
