It is a season of reflection, of repentance, of examining, and perhaps changing our priorities. We got off to a very good start on Ash Wednesday, and I was pleased to see a steady stream of worshippers at each of our three masses. Our new 9:15 Sunday Family Eucharist also seems to have met a real need, as the majority of those attending have not been regulars at our other masses, so clearly we are meeting a need that has been underserved. I have high hopes that this particular service will be a means of growing our church, without in any way detracting from our existing liturgies. My most fervent hope is that all of us in our parish will make the most of the opportunities to worship during Holy Week. Beginning with our three liturgies on Palm Sunday, we continue each weekday (morning at 8:00, evening at 6:30) to walk the way of the Cross. Dear Friends, I hope and pray that you are each finding this Lenten season a time of spiritual blessing.

Project One80Project One80Project One80Project One80

In December we helped with the

“Backpacks for Homeless” and it was a

great success!

We have reached out to the Community

Engagement Director and he suggests a

collection of the following items:

Slip resistant black shoes sized

9,10,11,12 and 13 for men. (For culinary

jobs) Sweat pants and sweat shirts

various sizes for men. (When men check

in and don't have a change of clothing

when they do laundry) Boxer shorts for

men sizes 28-38

The slip resistant shoes will need to be

new. Also the sweat pants and sweat

shirts and underwear will need to be

new.

Steel toe shoes, these can be gently used

since they will be on a construction

site. Our goal is to get 2 pairs of each

size: 10,101/2, 11, 12 and 13.

Please contact Dawn Balsam, Christine

Jennings or the church office if you can

help.

Thank you!

WHAT TO BRING: WHAT TO BRING: WHAT TO BRING: WHAT TO BRING: One Dozen hard-boiled eggs, per child, an egg carton for the dyed eggs to be taken home. PLUS an old, shirt that Children can wear while coloring eggs.

Dyes, Stickers. and other decorations will be provided.

There will be NO Easter Party.

This is an opportunity for our children to prepare their hearts and their Easter Eggs for Easter Sunday, just as we as adults prepare our hearts for the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ.

Parents may drop off their children and return at 11:30 to pick them up.

After His Crucifixion, Jesus’ disciples being afraid, hid in a locked room for fear of the Jewish Leaders. We, as Christians know, there is nothing to fear, and with all assurance know that HE did RISE on the Third Day and Lives Again. “And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salo me, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen.” (Mark 16:1-2, RSV) There is no beginning age for preparing our hearts, and our homes; therefore, we offer an opportunity for our youngest church and day school members to prepare for Easter. All children through age 11 are invited to come color and decorate Easter Eggs, as a way to prepare for Easter.

Youth leaders are planning a diocesan-wide lock-in in Charleston on Friday, April 8 while the Presiding Bishop is visiting our diocese. An optional program for youth will be offered on Saturday. Middle school and high school students (and parents), watch for more details and registration information coming soon.

If you have not picked up your Mite Box for this year, it is never too late to start making your personal deposits. Mite Boxes are available in the Angus Dei area. Take one, or two, drop coins, or dollars, in whenever you forego some-thing during Lent, then bring your box to Church on Easter Sunday and drop it in the basket at the West Door, where our children will be flowering the cross in the Narthex.

As is the tradition at Church of the Holy Communion, the Mite Boxes are brought forward by the children along with the flowered cross on Easter Sunday.

The funds collected in Mite Boxes go Episcopal Relief and Development. For more information on ERD, go to: Episcopalrelief.org

The Church of the Holy Communion:

About Us:

“Why should I visit your church?”

Delighted you asked! Church of the Holy Communion has served this community since 1848. From the day we opened our doors we have cherished these essentials:

We worship God in the Beauty of Holiness.

Where else in this city can you find a Mozart mass sung as a mass? (and not as a concert). To step through our doors is to be overwhelmed by physical beauty and spiritual transcendence. It is indeed heaven on earth.

We worship God by serving our neighbor and respecting the dignity of every human being.

After the Civil War, Church of the Holy Communion was the very first voice in the city to provide schools for African American children. And we have never wavered in this commitment to justice and open and loving inclusion. Today, we are at the forefront in this city for ministries of both justice and mercy. We have a bi-weekly free medical clinic, food pantry, and meals-on-wheels. There is a job for everyone, and an opportunity for all to make our community a better place.

We worship God with our heart, MIND and soul.

That is to say, we do not minimize the intellectual calling of our faith. Whether it is in the Montessori based curriculum for our children or the discussion groups for adults, we do not shy away from the hard questions. We can say the Nicene Creed with sincerity AND host Darwin Week. We are secure in our traditional Christian Faith, but we are not afraid of those with differing views. All are welcome in this place, and diversity is a healthy gift. We are enthusiastically a part of the National Episcopal Church, and therefore the worldwide Communion of Anglican Churches. We are not distracted by local squabbles nor engaged in the rancor and litigation that others have chosen. Sound like a place you would like to visit? You are most welcome at Church of the Holy Communion!
