Rabbi~s Message
The summer has drawn to a conc1~sion. The winter is coming. With the arrival 'of. . Sukkot, Autumn is now upon us. As we begin another season, we are mindful of the fact that another year in our lives has passed and rpat we have become a year older. We are reminded of our own mortality and question the meaning, purpose and direction of our lives.
Yet Judaism offers a positive perspective on life and the speedy flight of the years .. Our religion teaches that we live in deeds, not in time.
I share with you a charming parable which touches the heart and speaks to this theme.
A man was sweeping a synagogue and paused for a mom.ent. He looked at the flowers lying about in disorder.
. "What waste!" he said to himself. Those roses ad~rned the pulpit at a wedding an hour before. Now-all was over, and they were waiting to be discarded.
The attendant leaning on his sweeper was lost in thought when suddenly he heard a strange sound. One of the roses replied to him.
I
.'
R·\IWr /lR()\Il 1'. /) .\\ II )
"Do you call this a waste?" the flower protested~ "What is life anyway, yours or nllne, but a means 6f service? My mission was to _ create some fragrance and bea\!ty, and when I have fulfilled it my life has not been wasted. And what'
greater privilege is there than to adorn a bride's way to her beloved, what greater privilege tha,n to help glorify the moment w\1~n a bride. and groom seal their faith in each other by entering the covenant of marriage?"
"Roses are like people. They live in deeds, not in time: My glory was but · for a brief hour, but you should have seen the joy in the' bride's eye. I like to believe that I had something to do with it, by .creating a suitable setting for the moment of her supreme happiness, So don't grieve for ~e. My life has been ·worthwhile." -
The wisdom attributed to the rose is actually the wisdom inherent in Judaism's view of life and death. People live in deeds, not in time.
Let us strive to create a New Year filled with noble, good and worthwhile deeds, as we make our time

church, or your neighbor who is not affiliated to do it for you. In sports terminology you are not only the first team, you' are the only team. Going out on strike is not a viable option.
To those of you who have not given in the past, ask yourself why not; a contribution equal to a couple night's entertainment can hardly be a signiflcant sacrifice. To those who have given in the past, is there any reason why your synagogue cannot be made a higher priority. We give to the orchestra, ballet, and a thousand other charities; .of course they are important but isn't your heritage more so.
Erev Rosh Hashanah Rabbi Musnitsky spoke of how we judge people. My hope, if you are still listening, is that when you judge yourselves, you will be proud of your priorities and valuel1 and at peace with the example you have set for your children.

Th!'! implications of the court ruling go es, community holiday c~lebrations> reli-beyond academic institutions. "The Reli- _ gious publications and seminars on religious gious Affairs MipistrY will now have to treat the Orthodox and non-Orthodox sectors equally," declared Rabbi Uri Regey, head of the ARZA' founded Israel ReligiOUS Action Center. '
Since its inception in: 1987, the' Israel Religious Action Center....,...IRAC-has endeavored to apply Refonn JudaislI).'s values ,of human .equality, social justice, and religious tol~rance to creating a new society in Israel. A large ·part 9f !RAC's agenda focuses on land allocations for Reform synagogues which has been a difficult process despite the existence of a si~cant Progressive population. !RAC initiates liti-
, gation, judicial appeals and legislative proposals and provides reliable information to decision makers. Rabbi Regev believes the court's deciSion will mean ' long awaited funding not only for the activities of the -
r Refonn congregations, but the actual build~ ing of synagogues as well. '
The case began with the s\lbmis,sion of a funding request to the Ministry of Religf6us Affa.irs by t}le Jerusalem branch " of the Hebrew Union Conege-Jewish Institute of
, Religion, the Reform movement's rabbinical seminary and institute of hi8her learning. The ministry had disqualified Hebrew Union College, ~cause it has a co-educational student body and includes "secular
issues. At stake in the ruling were suplS in
excess of, some $300,000, which must now , be distributed to bOth the Conservative and -
" Reform movements. Ultimately, the two movements believe this' will mean funding not ohly for the activities of their 56 congre-
, gatio'ns, but the actual building of .syna-gogues as V{ell.
The co.urt ruling is a dramatic step forward in the direction of religious pluralism m Israel. _
A great deal of work remains to secure equal rights for non-Orthodox ~ovements . On the one hand, the Ministry of Religious Affairs must .abide by the rulings, of the ~igh Court of Justice, but on the _ other hand, control over Jewish religious life in Israel continues to be exclUsively, in the hands of the Orthodox, making it still impossible for a Reform or Conservative Rabbi to perform a ~ge, divorce, ,burial or conversion. ARZA and the supporter,; of religiOUS pluralism in Israel should relish this victory, but also remember that this is jUst the begfuning on the road toward eq:ual-ity for non-Orib:odox movements. '
Please support ARZA by mailing your check of $25 to Temple Emanuel. Use .the handycheck-off item on your monthly dues' bill. .

Tzedakah Food Project By Pearl Braunstein
Thanks to all of our families who supported our Yom Kippur Food Drive. It was indeed a great success aI}d the food was distributed to Jewish Family Service and the Food Bank of South Jersey.
Our next Casserole Cooking Program Will take place on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. in ~e 'kitchen. Sisterhood supplies the foods and all you need to do is bring a knife for cutting vegetables. The recipes are easy and are done in assembly line procedure. Just one hour of your time, produces food for over 250 people. The casseroles are distributed to the Neighborhood Center in Camden. If you would like to make these casseroles at home, please 'call me and I can give you the easy recipes. You can then bring them to the Temple for distributien.
October 22nd is "Make a Difference Day." Use it as a time to make a Jewish New Year resolution to reach out to others to make our community a better place. Plan something with your children or friends to achieve this goal. Making a casserole is a great start!
Please call me for recipes or other information regarding Tzedakah Projects at 424-2238.

Attention all Temple Emanuel boys and girls, men and women: 5755 is going to be an absolutely amazing year for Temple Emanuel Youth Groups! Don't just sit there, thinking about the possibility of trying us out; jump up, run to the phone, ·dial an officers number and commit to attending the very next event. Why, you ask? Let me begin to tell you . . .
1WEEN CANTEEN, our 5th and 6th grade group, is going to have monthly events that you won't want to miss. Beginning with our flfSt gathering, a lunch/movie party, we know that all of you 5th and 6th graders will only fwd more excitement each month. Join nowcall our Temple ReUgious School Office (489-0035)' to pe part of the fun.
SHOMRIM, the 7th and 8th grade Youth Group, started the year off by journeying to Great Advennire. Monthly events, like skiing, bowling, ice skating, dining and movies, as well as many social action events, really give our junior high'eis the chance to socialize and leam.. Just call me, Mrs. U, at 429-6227, to get more information.
And then there's TEFIY, (or all 9th through 12th graders. TEFIY-ITES ,helped to organize and coordinate many important aspects of our High Holiday Ernichment Program this year. Rich Bloom's services were inspiring; Heather Harvey's projects and work were wonderful.
tional vegetarian Tecipes from European Ashkenasinl to Spanish Sephardim. It includes vegetarian versions of traditional meat-based recipes and also includes menus for celebrating Sabbath and the festivals.
The Seventh Million: ' Israel Confronts the Jlo1ocaust by TomSegev Tom'Segev tells the dramatic story of how the Y~huv, the Jewish community of pro-Israel Palestine"confronted the rise of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, and how Israel society has dealt with the consequences ever since.
CHIlD; The flfSt days of Pre-5chool are scary as can be. Who will my Morah be and . what will she think of me?
Ben David and Rachel 'Umansky effectively supervised all the volunteers. Add to this over 60 junior and senior high volunteers and almost 200 enrolled little ones and the result · is an unparalleled experience for participant and helper alike. What a wonderful way to usher in the New Year. , Youth Group ' was also called ~pon to decorate the Sukkah this year. Both TEFIY and SHOMRIM jOined forces, had a pizza dinner together and then beautified the Sukkah. It really was a lot of fun for those who helped. The result was well worth the effort.
:rEFlY's flfSt planned event, led by Dave Schwartz, was a HayridelDirmer Party with other PAFIY YO\lth Groups. ~k for outstanding social activities at least one a month from now on.
Pam Clarke is busily working .on our 1st Social Action event, while Stu Dubin has already begun our weekly Bagel Breakfast Sale on Sundays.
There's more to Youth Group ~ meets the eye': Come and check us out todaY.
