January 2015

Hello Aloha Warrior Families,

During our recent vacation, I spent a great deal of time considering our mission at Aloha. My reflections find me eager to begin 2015 with vision, optimism and determination.

Our vision for Aloha is to provide a rich, challenging and relevant education for each and every one of our students. This is articulated in our mission statement:

“Supported by a culturally rich and academically rigorous community, Aloha High School graduates students college and career ready.”

We are making steady progress in providing a great education that includes all our students. Various means to this end include:

• A continued commitment to a rich and diverse curriculum, including opportunities in the applied arts and choice for students.

• A strong Advanced Placement (AP) Program that prepares students for college and dedicated to increasing socio-economic, racial and ethnic diversity.

• Designing, implementing and monitoring courses and social supports that provide successful interventions for students to ensure they meet critical benchmarks necessary for graduation.

•  Nurturing a sense of the “Aloha Family” that leads to both philanthropy and a true sense of community.

• Striving for excellence in the arts and athletics.

We have witnessed our students accomplish amazing things at Aloha over the past several years. Your support has been fundamental to these successes and I am forever grateful to be part of the Aloha community. However, as we commence upon a new year I am increasingly determined to help us realize our mission statement. Though not easy, with a talented and dedicated staff and your support this can and will happen.

Happy New Year and Go Warriors!

Enero 2015

Hola familias Guerreras,

Computer Aided Drafting goes 3DThe Computer Aided Drafting class just purchased a new 3-D printer thanks to money from the Perkins grant.  The Aloha High School Architecture/CADD    (Computer Aided Drafting & Design) classes get funding from Perkins because it is a CTE (Career & Technical Education) class that offers college credit.  We will soon be able make working models of parts that we created in AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit.  Engineering Drafting students will create parts, verifying whether or not they fit/operate properly.  This hands on experience will help students prepare for college classes as well as careers in engineering, CADD,  graphic arts and many others.

Infographics and World LitAdvanced World Literature has moved into the 21st century. Say goodbye to posters with hand drawn stick figures and say hello to infographics. Students in Ms. LoBello's Advanced World Literature class created infographics analyzing a main character from the novel, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Students identified their character's attributes, provided textual support, and analyzed the connection between the two. Not only were students displaying critical thinking and analysis, they were using new and innovative t e c h n o l o g y . Moreover, students turned their projects in digitally! The characterization infographic uses technology to teach critical thinking and writing, while saving expensive paper and ink.

Holiday Sharing

Warriors Commitment to Community

Warriors raised over $7000 to help 25 needy families from our feeder elementary schools and for our own homeless teens.

We raised money by: T-shirts, pies in faces, Mohawks, dancing, taping to a wall, Ducks dressing as Beavers, nice guys as Grinches, crazy costumes, food drive, wrapping, tree sales, piercings, 25 eggs in 20 minutes, and eating “great balls of fire!”

College VIP DaysFall semester is a crazy time of year for seniors as they submit their college applications and then nervously wait for acceptance or rejection letters that determine their fate.  Over 100 of our seniors skipped ahead by participating in Viking, Wolf, or Beaver Day. Representatives of Portland State University, Western Oregon University, and Oregon State University came to interview students. Those students who qualified got their

admission letter that day. Congratulations seniors!

NAEP 2015Coming soon to Aloha High School! Our school has been selected to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as NAEP. You may have heard of NAEP. The results are called The Nation’s Report Card because it measures student achievement across the country. It is important because the results help the President, Congress, and all of our educators make decisions about how to improve our education system. In February, 95 of our seniors will participate in this important assessment. They will represent not only Aloha students, but students across the state of Oregon. They will have a chance to have an impact on the future education policy decisions in the United States. Every student that is selected to participate makes a difference. We will be providing more information for students and parents in the upcoming weeks.
