Message from the President Trevor Thompson, President Team Canada: As a new year approaches, let’s take a moment to reflect on our achievements from 2016. There have been some exciting times. With the acquisition of Diebold, the third largest commercial electronic security provider in North America, and the implementation of Securitas Electronic Services, Securitas Canada has seamlessly rounded itself out this year with these great expansions. 2016 has also been a year of pride, as our guards continued to make a difference within their communities by adhering to our three core values of Integrity, Helpfulness and Vigilance, as well as going above and beyond their call of duties. Our 2017 Kick Off Meeting, coordinated by Anna Mirabelli, was a great success. It was a pleasure, not only sharing business plans and initiatives, but also having the time to get to know one another. We are a team, and together we have made 2016 a triumphant year for Securitas Canada. For that, I want to thank you all for the hard work put forth. I have no doubt 2017 will be an even greater success. Happy Holidays everyone! Health and happiness to you and all of your loved ones in the New Year! Trevor Thompson, President

Team Canada: As a new year approaches, let’s take a moment to reflect on our achievements from 2016. Lance Kelly, Area Vice President, Western Canada Felix was born in Nigeria, Africa, into a loving, high achieving, education driven family. His mother, a doctor, taught high values and standards to her children. When Felix had a wife and child of his own he wanted the same for his family. However, the educational system was not the same and signs of corruption were becoming more and more evident. Thus the decision to come to Canada for a better future for their son was made. Felix and his family were chosen for immigration fairly quickly, and it was decided that he would come first to get settled and established so that when his family arrived the culture shock would be more easily absorbed. 4 months later Felix was finding his groove in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He had bought a little home for his family, was 2 weeks into his first job and things were looking up. On the phone with his wife one morning she informed him that she wasn’t feeling so good and he had convinced her to go to the hospital to get checked out. That was the last time he spoke with her. She passed away later that day from pneumonia. Their little boy was just over a year old. Three years later Felix finds himself working as a Security Officer by day, and a student in University by night. An honest man, pushing himself to his highest potential, fighting to create a life for his son so that when he joins him here in Canada Felix will be able to be there when he gets home from school each day. One ordinary day in the course of his duties at a downtown Liquor Mart, (a shady part of town), a mad gunman came into the store and pressed the gun into Felix’s back, screaming “give me your gun, where is your gun?” With 10 other people in the store, and his little boy on his mind, Felix was faced with an enormous responsibility. He told the gunman that he didn’t have a gun. He heard and felt the pull of the trigger, in his brain all he could think was that if he died here, his son would be an orphan. Again, he felt the pull of the trigger and knew there was a problem with the gun and in one swift motion he spun around and tackled the gunman to the ground. This gave opportunity for the customers in the store to run to safety. A few minutes later an arrest was made and nobody was hurt in the process. Quick thinking, bravery and a strong will to live turned this potentially horrifying ordeal into something that has inspired and motivated so many people to be the best they can be. Because of Felix’s actions, Securitas has better guards, better managers, and better trainers. It was a reality check that gave perspective to why we do what we do. And we do better now, standing up a little bit straighter, a little bit prouder and with a purpose.

Current client, Pratt & Whitney, shared an article on their company intranet regarding one of Securitas Canada’s employees, Pierre Charron – the man who provides security with a smile! They began by stating that “for Pratt & Whitney Canada employees, the workday begins with Pierre Charron smiling “hello” when they arrive to the office.” To name a few of his responsibilities, Pierre supervises the badges, site access, and reserved parking spaces. Pierre is known for keeping his eyes open at all times to protect and support his colleagues. Pratt & Whitney dedicate “this Bravo Moment to him for his DEPENDABILITY.” As a Securitas security Guard, Pierre has been ensuring the safety of P&WC employees, visitors and facilities for 29-and-a-half-years. “He remains as passionate about his work as ever,” they state in their article. “I’ve known him for nine years,” says Jeremy Fenton, Audio-Visual Technician, “and he’s always been friendly, calm and polite. Pierre is truly the face of R&D. He’s the first person that employees and guests see when they arrive. The services he provides go well above and beyond his job description. It would take too long to detail everything that he’s done for us.” It is employees such as Pierre Charron that make Securitas Canada proud of what we do. It is an honour to have such an amiable and professional individual on our team.

Highlight on Employees

The Employee Anniversary Recognition Program

Securitas Canada’s Employee Anniversary Recognition Program is designed to formally recognize employees on key anniversary dates. Employee recognition, be it for number of years of service or for

other reasons, is a crucial component of employee motivation. Taking the time to recognize an employee goes a long way towards strengthening both employee and client relationships. Our clients

appreciate the fact that Securitas understands and demonstrates that people make the difference!

The Employee Anniversary Recognition Program is to be administered locally by each Area and should include an Employee anniversary recognition pin (available for one, three and five-year anniversaries and every five years after that), an employee award certificate and a congratulations letter to the employee.

This information is all available on the Knowledge Library.

The Securitas Hotline is a secure and confidential way for employees to report ethics, safety, and other workplace concerns. You can place a call to The Securitas Hotline at 1-866-528-6556 or file a report online at www.securitashotline.ca 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Remember, many Securitas employees work at client facilities and are expected to observe and report certain types of situations as part of their job. The Securitas Hotline is not a substitute for everyday reporting, but should be used to report only those conditions or situations that you were unable to resolve through local branch management. What issues should I first take to my branch management? Working through your chain of command is key. Questions pertaining to uniforms, paycheques, or clarification regarding Company policy should first be addressed with your Branch Manager. However, if you are uncomfortable with approaching local management or did not receive a satisfactory response from them, The Securitas Hotline is an appropriate option. What types of concerns should I report to The Securitas Hotline? • Harassment • Discrimination • Alcohol or drug use • Workplace violence • Policy violations • Pay issues • Health and safety issues • Theft, fraud, or damage to company

property • Ethics violations or any illegal activity • Unfair treatment of any kind

These concerns may arise from observing the following types of inappropriate conduct: • An employee exhibiting signs of violent

behaviour. • Someone selling drugs at work. • An employee risking an accident

because of drugs or alcohol use. • A fellow employee taking Company or

client property such as cash, supplies, inventory or equipment.

• Someone vandalizing Company or client property or equipment.

• Yourself or someone else being treated unfairly or unprofessionally because of sex, race, national origin, age, disability, religion or other protected grounds

• A co-worker making a false injury claim. What happens when I make a report? You can either call in a report or submit one online. When you call, a Securitas Hotline communications specialist will answer your call and ask you a series of questions to understand the nature of your call. It is important that you provide information such as the name and location of your branch office and any other pertinent information that will assist the company in researching and resolving your concern. The communications specialists will take your information and prepare a written report that will be forwarded to Securitas management. When you make a report online, you are asked to respond to a series of questions as well. A report is also generated and forwarded to Securitas management. After the report is reviewed, it will be assigned appropriately to initiate an inquiry. Will I have to give you my name? No, you do not have to give your name if you do not wish to. The information in your report will always be confidential. However, in some cases, management may need more information in order to address your concerns, or you might be encouraged to

meet with a management representative if you were personally affected by the situation being reported. But it will always be your decision whether to identify yourself. What if I don’t have all the facts? Securitas wants you to report all concerns in good faith. We will look into the information you provide, attempt to verify it and take appropriate action. If additional information is needed, someone will contact you. How do I check the status of my report to The Securitas Hotline? After you submit your report, you will enter a custom password and be assigned a unique report key. This information is exclusive to your report and is unavailable to Securitas in order to protect your confidentiality if you chose to remain anonymous. You can use your password and report key to contact The Securitas Hotline either by phone or web to obtain a response or provide additional information. 10 Cold Stress Prevention Tips

Living in Canada means you will inevitably have to go outside in the winter. It also means there are people who have no choice but to work outside in some of the toughest weather this country has to offer. With this in mind, it is integral to recognize the risks and hazards working outside in the winter brings. Failure to acknowledge or respect the dangers winter brings is a recipe for potential bodily harm or death.

• Wear layered clothing. Wearing multiple layers of clothing allows the worker to adjust their protection based on current temperature. Take off layers as you get too warm and put them on as it gets colder. • Take extra clothes. Bring a change of clothes in case you get wet. Dry clothing always helps keep workers warm, especially when working outdoors.

• Take a break. During extremely cold or windy weather, take regular breaks to warm up before continuing work. If possible, take shelter indoors from time to time, to warm up that body. If it gets extremely cold, stop working immediately and get inside to warm up. Do not risk your life for a job.

• Drink up. Even though it’s cold out, keep hydrated by drinking water or other warm drinks. You will still sweat when working, even in cold temperatures. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. • Take shelter. In windy conditions and if the workspace allows it, set up a shelter to block the wind. This will help alleviate some of the difficulties of working in the cold. • Know the signs. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Get inside if you

begin to experience them. If you see a co-worker showing symptoms, take them inside immediately. • Anti-slip shoes. To avoid slipping on ice, wear winter boots with a strong tread. Spread sand or rock salt on the ice to provide a rough surface for footwear to grip.

• Heat ventilation. If using a non-electric heater to heat a shelter, ensure the shelter is ventilated to let gases like carbon monoxide escape. Or, use a heater where the heat generator can be placed outside while the heated air is pumped into the shelter. • Drive safely. When driving in winter, ensure your vehicle’s fluids are topped up. Be aware that the road can become icy, so drive slower and pay attention to changing conditions.

Health & Safety James Evans, National Quality / Health & Safety Director

For many, the mornings are much colder and darker and our afternoons come much earlier as the sun gives way to the moon. We are well into our winter season. With the shortness of sunlight some will feel tired or even rundown, but this may be attributed to other factors that cause fatigue. Fatigue is the state of feeling very tired, weary or sleepy all resulted from poor or little sleep, prolonged mental or physical work or experiencing extended periods of stress or anxiety. Often, boring or repetitive tasks can increase the onset of fatigue. Fatigue can impact work productivity and it can impact the ability to function overall. Studies have focused on fatigue in the workplace, and results have shown that when an individual sleeps for less than five hours before work, or when an individual has been awake for more than 16 hours, their chances of making mistakes at work increase significantly. As much of what can affect someone in the workplace who is experiencing fatigue can also affect them at home, therefore we strongly encourage everyone to consider the following tips:

• Eat a healthy diet that promotes longer-lasting energy. Complex carbohydrates (green vegetables, beans, grains) are preferable to simple carbohydrates (sugars). Avoid fatty foods and junk food.

• Adopt a steady exercise routine that includes cardiovascular, muscle strengthening and flexibility workouts.

• Try to get at least 7.5 – 8.5 hours of sleep per night. Try to go to bed and get up at the same

time every day.

• Stay positive. Make a conscious effort not to be overwhelmed by negative circumstances.

• Avoid driving if you are tired, especially in inclement weather when road conditions are hazardous, and visibility is limited.

• Avoid excessive noise.

Community Involvement James Evans, National Quality / Health & Safety Director

Thanks to everyone who donates through the Make-A-Wish payroll deductions program and the various means of fundraising throughout the year supporting the Make-A-Wish program, Securitas Canada is pleased to announce that we will be making a child’s wish come true this year. This year’s child will be selected from our Atlantic Canada Area, marking the fourth consecutive year that Securitas Canada has made a child’s wish come true through the Make-A-Wish program. The selection process for the Area chosen for this year’s wish was done through a team building exercise that took place in early December at our National Meeting and company President, Trevor Thompson, also awarded both the GTSO Area and the Western Canada Area $1000.00 to donate to their selected Area charities of choice. In addition, Securitas Canada community news, the company’s inaugural “Swing for a Cure” fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society, was a huge success. Held this past October and created as an event replacing the annual “Cure for Cancer Ball Hockey Challenge,” the baseball event raised over $10,000.00 as Securitas Canada employees, family and friends took to the Rama Ontario ball park for what truly was a fun filled day of baseball. Plans have already begun for both continued fundraising for the Make-A-Wish program and for the Canadian Cancer Society looking ahead to 2017. If you have an idea for a community initiative or if you would like to share your story of a recent community initiative, please email James Evans at [email protected].

Quality Corner James Evans, National Quality / Health & Safety Director

November was World Quality month and it represented a focus on continual improvement as this is the key to ensuring that a Quality Management System is working as designed and that it produces quality service. A great example of continual improvement is the Securitas Canada Quality Management System as we just recently completed our third successful external surveillance audit through NQA. Our Quality Management System was created in 2013 and we received an official certification for the program in April of 2014. Since this time we have been making revisions to the program that not only better service the needs of both our external and internal customers, but also have been making revisions that all best demonstrate “continual improvement”. We are excited to move into 2017 as the coming New Year represents our transition from the 9001-2008 ISO standard to the new 9001-2015 standard. There are many revisions to the standard which all now have to be carefully reviewed and worked into our Quality Management Program as each further represents an opportunity for improvement. We look forward to further communicating and hearing from you on happenings within our Quality Management System and if you have comments, feedback and/or suggestions, please contact James Evans at [email protected].
