After practising our traditions during the 40 days of Lent, we faithfully observed the rites and services of Holy Week to remem-ber the Passion of our Lord. And then we celebrated Easter Sun-day. On that single day, we cele-brated the most important festi-val of our Christian faith. And on the following day, we all became immersed again in the routine of our daily lives, quickly forgetting the message of Christ’s resurrec-tion. But the church gives us fifty days to celebrate Easter, and thus we are reminded that we are still in the Easter season. Following the

liturgical calendar, we see that we will be celebrating into early June the seven weeks of Easter. We are celebrating Christ’s tri-umph over death, we are cele-brating in gratitude the redemp-tion of all our sins! This is the joy that we share with each other, it is the essence of our faith. Some of us desire to live our lives as if Jesus was still in the tomb. But He is not. He is risen and is present among us. He calls us each day to live after Him. When we renewed our baptismal prom-ises during the Easter service, we resolved to be faithful to daily prayer, to participate more fer-

vently in the Eu-charistic celebra-tion, to try and live the Beatitudes, and to make a com-mitment to on-going conversion of the heart. This is what makes us EASTER PEOPLE. In continuing to celebrate Easter in our day-to-day lives, let us be strong in faith, persist in hope, and abound in charity. Father Ely C. Dalanon

Message from the Chaplain

From our informal beginnings in the mid-1980’s we were given a home in 2003 in the Parish of Maria vom Berge Karmel in Vienna’s 10th district. Over time we grew together with the Austrian par-ish, and in 2008 we celebrated our 25th anniversary as a commu-nity. In 2012 we experienced the canoniza-tion rites of the 2nd Filipino saint, San Pedro Calungsod.

2013 marked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the elec-tion of Pope Francis, who was born in Argentina. We have just experienced the canonization of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. Following the Archdiocese of Vienna’s program of restructuring, we will be assigned a home away from Maria vom Berge Karmel. Wherever and whenever, we journey in faith. In God.

Remembering the victims of the Bohol earthquake

The best time to give love

mediate and systematic action, this is what I said to the parishioners, “We were spared from serious damage of the earthquake. It has become our great moral obligation to help our suffering neighbors as quickly as possible.” The worst of times is the best time to give

love. By our recent experience we in Jagna know this is true. The devastating earth-quake has brought out the best in many of us. We became generous donors and cou-rageous volunteers who work selflessly for many hours without complaining. Yes, because of the disaster we are turned into heroes and saints. The worst of times is the best time to give love. Our food relief operations lasted for almost a month, but our rehabilitation

efforts for earthquake survivors continue until now. This is made possible because of the generosity of so many people from all over the world, including the Filipino Cath-olic Chaplaincy in Vienna, Austria, headed by Rev. Fr. Ely Dalanon and assisted by Rev. Fr. Bong Alejo and Rev. Fr. Dongdong Estafia. The chaplaincy, with donations also

from many Austrian friends, has extended significant financial assistance for families of the survivors through Saint Michael the Archangel Parish. The worst of times is the best time to give love. Amen, Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Msgr. Alberto S. Uy, E.V., Parish Priest, St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Jagna, Bo-hol, Philippines

The worst of times is the best time to give love. This is a valuable lesson that we came to learn after a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the heart of Bohol on October 15, 2013 at around 8:12 in the morning. That earthquake is arguably the most destructive of all disasters, natural or man-made, that ever happened in the province in recent memory. The powerful quake brought down many old, beautiful churches in Bohol, but definitely not the faith of the people. Despite the unimagina-ble amount of damage in infrastructure and livelihood, and the hundreds of lives lost, Boholanos have remained steadfast in their trust in God. Remarkably, they even took the disaster as a great opportunity to show their love and concern for one anoth-er. The worst of times is the best time to give love. The parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Jagna, Bohol gradually came to appreciate this precious lesson when we started to organize ourselves for relief operations a few hours after the destructive earthquake. Appealing for im-

it has become our great moral obligation to help our suffering

neighbours as quickly as possible...

Napa KRUS ako at napadasal.

Well! It is because of faith, gratitude and grace. “Mapalad ako na maka-attend ng huling world youth day - 2002 ni St. John Paul II na gina-wa sa Toronto, Can-ada. Ito ay naging regalo ng aking mga kapatid at bayaw sa akin. I was just four years in the ministry as a priest.

St. John Paul II... Pray for us. Amen. answered why's that have driven me all the more to feel helpless and de-jected. But are these questions really unanswered? The bites What really were the real reasons why I felt these negative emotions? Have I become so relaxed, comfortable and attached to what this church can offer to our community in terms of its huge building, spacious grounds and ameni-ties? A perfect church for our great number and needs! And, l have always thought that no other church in Vien-na can offer or equal the comfort and

convenience that it can provide. But, come to think of it, our community, despite having to move from one church to another over the years, has survived and has even grown stronger each time. Finally, I realized I was barking up the wrong tree. All my questions have long been answered,

and I was just not listening. I was so focused at what the Archdiocese can give and provide to and for our com-munity that I totally forgot and ig-nored His voice, answering my ques-tion and soothing my negative emo-tions, even before I asked and felt them. The Lord our God has long been telling me, why worry, why get dis-turbed, angry and feel dejected for leaving the comforts of Maria vom Berge Karmel church? You are my body, the real church alive and strong. Put your whole trust in Me and wher-ever and whichever church you will be, I will be there with you, deep in your

hearts. I am sending you to a new mission, a new home, new church to build new relationships and make my body stronger with your love for one an-other. Remember that I am

always in your midst, the real church, alive and full of energy and strength, not the building and its amenities. This reminds me of the song," a house is not a home when there is no one there to.......". Praise God!!! George Florendo

The bits Anger, dismay and frustration were not enough to describe what I felt the first time I heard the news that the Archdiocese is allowing the sale of Maria vom Berge Karmel church to the Syrian Orthodox Church. Could the Archdiocese be so insensitive and/or unmindful of our community feelings and needs? What about all the time, talent and especially the treasure we, the Filipino Community, have shared, sacrificed and given for the mainte-nance and repair of this deteriorating church? For many years we have con-sidered this church as the home of our praise and worship, and since then we have become closer to each other, bound by our common faith and strengthened by our care, respect and love for one another. We have grown and become one big happy and vibrant community, a church that is alive! Why then is the Archdiocese allowing the sale of this church? Why not other churches where there are almost no churchgoers, churches that are looking more like museums and not as houses of worship? There are many more un-

The former economus of the Archdiocese of Cebu, Msgr. Joseph “Siongo” Tan currently pursues studies in Rome on mass media communication. He shared some insights with our Community on 12 April during our annual Lent Recol-lection to prepare for the Holy Week celebrations. In our busy modern life with all available gadgets to give us access to information, we are engaged in doing so many things together (e.g., eating out, going to the movies, tex-ting each other, etc) but we seem to have lost the art of making conversation. St. Benedict teaches us that there is value in learning how to talk properly/appropriately; this can actually help deepen our relationships. In Examen of Consciousness we are taught by St. Ignatius of Loyola a method of examining our lives so that we might better serve the Lord. Practising the Examen daily helps us to learn to discern God’s will and grow in the understanding of God’s beautiful creation. Bringing these two sources, to-gether, we are reminded to make time for God in our daily life and - when talking – to aim to express love, not harm. In the story of the Tower of Babel, we became divided through different languages, but in Pentecost we are

brought together because of the love of God. In communi-cation, we share space and a common understanding of inter-dependence. Being made in the image of God, we have the ability to communicate, as He does in the Holy Trinity. Communication provides a natural opportunity to help each other survive, through interdependence on the gifts that we receive from God. Are we ready for it? Remembering our aim to es-tablish God’s Kingdom on earth, let us speak in truth and in love, not in judgment nor condemnation. Let us say things that inspire goodness and build faith. To close the day, Msgr Siongo called our attention to the “Catholic Voices” websites. Serva libera

and delegates, the conference was officially opened by the CFC European Coordinator, Brother Mannix Ocampo. The evening was capped off by an en-riching talk on spiritual exercises by Monsignor Allen, the CFC Spiritual Director. Saturday was packed with activity, with sessions that inspired, reminded and called all the delegates to greater holiness. The sessions that stood out in particular were the ones led by Msgr. Allen, which focused on CFC members being part of the Bride of Christ, which is the Church. Other ses-sions, such as the talk on the New Evangelization by Brother Mon Carpio, reminded members of the missionary call by John Paul II to cast out into the deep and bring people back to the Church. The evening ended with a vari-ety of instructive, yet hilariously enter-

taining, team-building games. The games ranged from members trying to line up according to their age to dele-gates literally jumping through hula-hoops. Sunday was the last day of the confer-ence and the entire weekend was capped off by a Mass with the Arch-bishop of Monaco, His Excellency Ce-sar Augustin Barsi. Archbishop Barsi echoed the words of the Parish Priest, Fr Bill to not be afraid in terms of our role in evangelization. He also empha-sized the importance of the role of the family, especially in this modern era. “The family is the basic unit of any society. We must keep this unit intact and it must be used for the Glory of God.” Vince Granado

From 21 to 23 March 2014, several hundred leaders from Couples for Christ met for the Annual Leader’s Conference in Monaco. The attendees came from all over the globe: the Phil-ippines, United States, Canada, but the conference was aimed at CFC leaders from Europe. Obviously, the largest representation came from the home country of Monaco. In comparison to the weather in my home city of Vien-na, Austria the temperature was a balmy 15 degrees with plenty of sun. The conference began on Friday even-ing with the Holy Mass at St. Charles Church; it was presided over by Father Bill, the parish priest. The delegates were warmly welcomed and were re-minded of their call as missionaries, especially with regard to their leader-ship in Couples for Christ. The Passion of Christ Weekend took place in Großstelzendorf, 3-5 January 2014. The event was organized by the CFC Youth for Family and Life, the Youth ministry of the Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life (CFC-FFL). The main purpose was to empower the youth to witness Christ’s love in their everyday lives. Evaluating relationships with God, others and our-selves The talk on the respect of family values reminded the youths of their responsibility as siblings, as children of parents, and also as children of God. The second talk concerning Christ-centered friendships emphasized the need to discern one’s friends in life. Also, the par-ticipants had the opportunity to contemplate through prayer and Holy Mass. Love and loyalty as a brother or sister in Christ The segment on Brotherhood and Sisterhood puts importance on relating with friends in the way that Christ called them to. Kennet Ponti appealed to the boys to step up as men, according to God’s definition, such as being a leader, a provider, a protector and a

pastor to their companions. The girls, as women of God, were encouraged by Venice Sto. Tomas to un-derstand their emotions better, to appreciate their values even more, and to realize the importance of God their own lives. According to Babsie Tidoso, and other testiömonials, only God can make us live in freedom and love with others. With the long-term aim of sharing with others how to be “a true woman of God and a great sister to everyone”, Babsie, also known as Ezzycupcake on Blogspot, eventually added a segment in her Blog called “Sisterhood”. The Brotherhood and Sisterhood sessions made clear, in terms of love-life, that the significant other should only be treated according to God’s purpose - a great advice by personal testimonies which will definitely be important to the youths in the future. Empowered to witness in His name

The allocutio plays an all-important part in the development of the legionaries. It is given by our Spiritual Director or, in his absence, by the President or any member designated by the President. The allo-cutio should not last more than five or six minutes. Here is the gist of some of the allocutio from our spiritual directors: About focusing in our lives on fashionables, especially with clothes,

jewellery and other luxuries: normal-ly we are not contented with what we have or what we have received. We are always complaining because we don’t get what we want. We should bear in mind that only God can completely fill the fashion of our lives.

It is not enough that we recruit new

members. In our apostolate work,

there are 2 important things: the old and new sheep. Don’t focus only on the new sheep, but also remember the lost sheep.

Sacraments are very important with us, especially Confession, Penance and Reconciliation. It is closely linked with the Eucharist because Christ’s forgiveness comes to us through the merits of His death – the very death we celebrate in the Eucharist.

We have different callings but we are called in different states of life. It depends on you what you want to be, and many are getting married. We have what is called Universal Calling and that is personal holiness. To be holy does not come from us. Holiness comes from above.

Our goal as legionaries is to help other people to become good followers of God and Mary. We are like the rays of the sun that has fire that gives light to people. Mary Immaculate, pray for us. Linda Bustonera

Hello, here we are again, the soldiers of Mama Mary, the Legionaries. A very important activity of the Legion of Mary is the meeting of the Praesidi-um, which all members are expected to attend. We are expected to be punctual. At the meeting, we pray the rosary, study the Handbook of Mama Mary, and listen to allocutio provided by our Spiritual Director.
