In Parshas Toldos, we begin the life story of Yitzchak Avinu. The pasuk states ויעתר יצחק לה לנכח אשתו”, Yitzchak davened to Hashem opposite his wife, כי עקרה היא”, because she was barren. It is interesng to note that the אבותand אמהותwere faced with the נסיוןof being עקרות. The Gemara in ס( יבמות) דsays that the reason they were barren was because הקב ה מתאווה לתפלתן של צדיקים; Hashem desires the tefillos of tzadikim. It seems quite strange that tzadikim needed to experience such terrible circumstances because Hashem enjoys their tefilllos. There must be more to it. Rav Pam, זצ לpoints out that we can't begin to under- stand what the tefillos of our אבותand אמהותwere like. When a tzadik davens, his neshama connects to Hashem in a way that we cannot comprehend. It's a kind of "out of body experience". The halacha states that if a person does not have כוונהduring the tefilla of מגן אברהם, he must repeat the Shemona Esrei. However, the הלכה למעשהis that one does not repeat the Shemona Esrei in such a case for fear that he may not have the proper כוונהthe second me. We are not on a level to comprehend the depth of how the חסידים הראשוניםused to daven. The Gemara in ל( מסכת ברכות) בtells us that they spent three hours on their prayers. One hour was in preparaon for davening, another hour for davening and a third hour aſter davening. This was for each of the three tefillos of the day. We can understand them preparing for an hour before and during davening. Why did they spend an hour aſter tefilla? The hour aſter prayer was the decompression that tzadikim of previous generaons needed in order to get back to this world aſter having literally been in another world. They could not run to do carpool aſter such an out of body experience. Rav Pam explained that the tefillos of our אבותand אמהותwere not just for the purpose of producing offspring. Their tefillos were for the purpose of pro- ducing other אבות. Their prayer was on the level that could produce a Yitzchak, Yaakov and 12 שבטיםwho would bring a naon to be מקבלthe Torah at הר סיניand build the future of K’lal Yisrael. We see from this that the level of tefilla of parents has a direct impact on the growth of children. In addi- on, only in an environment of קדושהis it possible for children to grow and build homes that will be worthy of greeng Moshiach. It is a mistake to think that we can have all the trimmings of Western civilizaon in our homes and expect to produce children with the sensivity that reflects our rich heritage built with קדושהוטהרה. In addion to tefilla, the pasuk says ויעתר יצחק לה‘ לנכח אשתו““. Parnes Hayom Learning was dedicated on the following days: We are excited to share some wonder-

ful news about our state of the art computer lab. This year we have been fortunate to be the beneficiaries of a generous grant from the Silvan Founda-tion, earmarked for refurbishing our lab. The students are now able to work at individual computer stations that provide easy and comfortable access to their computers, and the room is now able to accommodate an additional three computers to meet the needs of some of our classes. The YBH computer lab is a hub of activity with students as young as Pre1A through 8th grade engaging in activities that challenge their creative and logical thinking, as well as advance their aca-demic skills. For example, Pre1A through fifth grades work on the “Matific” program, that through motivational interactive games, are able to practice and extend mathemati-cal thinking and improve recall of target skills. The 6th and 7th grades have been working with Blockly which uses visual blocks that you drag and drop to write programs. Our 8th graders use their yearbook project to utilize the skills they have been learning in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Publisher in previous years. These skills include page design and layout, proofreading, picture editing and using effects to enhance and tell a story about a page. These skills, with collaboration, create a beautiful finished product. Looking ahead to December, I am excited for our fourth year of participation in The Hour of Code.

The YBH computer lab is not only a center of student learning, it is also accessible to teachers who want to fur-ther enhance their own repertoire of technology skills either through private lessons or for the upcoming “Lunch and Learn” sessions during which they work on specific topics relevant to technology in the classroom. Many also attended technology workshops on Google Drive and Smart notebook during our Election Day In Service Program. YBH continues to provide our students with opportunities to enrich and extend their learning using 21st century re-sources. In an environment that recog-nizes and meets the standards of the Yeshiva, our students explore, create and advance their knowledge and thinking. It’s “time” for… Chodesh Kislev! The first through fifth grade girls received mini “clocks” (doughnuts) as they explored the concept of Each class wrote .”עת להודות ולהלל“ meaningful thank you notes to a staff member at YBH. What a beautiful way to show הכרת הטוב! The sixth through eighth grade girls enjoyed a chessed party as they were introduced to our middle school voluntary chessed program. “שלשה סימנים יש באומה זו:

“בישנים,רחמנים,גומלי חסדים. Rabbi Leiner introduced the program with an inspirational story about who are we? We are a nation that is sensitive and kind to others. The girls viewed a video clip about Rabbi Geldzahler, z”l, who impacted the lives of others daily. They gathered in groups to discuss ways to emulate Rabbi Geldzahler and how to make others feel “tall” by looking out for them. Creative cakes were decorated, displaying a concept of chessed, which were then enjoyed by all. We look forward to hearing about the ways our girls will be involved in their chessed projects over the next few months. Those girls who accu-mulate 20 hours will be treated to a special activity at the end of the school year. This year we will be treating the girls who have reached the half- way point of 10 hours to join a “Cocoa Club”. Have a wonderful Shabbos, Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern Asst. Principal, Girls’ Division

What a beautiful mitzvah Avraham Avinu taught us. Besides teaching all who came to visit him about

Hashem, he exemplified the mitzvah of Hachnosas Orchim. The three Pre1A classes invited the admin-

istration, office staff and Rick, our super security guard, for a special Hachnosas Orchim

party. The children enjoyed watching the story of Avraham Avinu performed by the morahs.

At the finale, Morah Shoshanah invited all the children into her tent for food and drink as they

learned the midda of hachnosas orchim and hakoras hatov to Hashem. Thank you, Mr. Friedman for

setting up the lunchroom for this gala event.

Mrs. Kwestel’s son Adam, a lone soldier in the IDF, came to

speak to fifth grade classes. He shared why he wanted to be a volunteer and what it is like to train as a combat engineer. He has been in the army since March 2016 and recently completed his basic training. He also

visited the seventh and eighth grade boys classes.

Morah Weiss’s Kitah Daled topped off their recent Ivrit unit with a unique מסעדה, (restaurant) project, complete with colorful paper goods and delicious foods of all types. מלצריות (waitresses) took the girls’ הזמנות (orders) and served each girl a gourmet lunch, restaurant style. All conversations were held in Ivrit and a great and delicious time was had by all.

Morah Strulowitz’s Kita Vav: Over the past few weeks, Morah Strulowitz's 6G classroom has been filled with energy, excitement and lots of learning as the students participated in an enriching cooperative learning activi-ty centering on the Mishkan. The group work was differentiated for each group according to every individual student's areas of strength and challenge. Students engaged more deeply in the Chumash and meforshim at their own pace as they worked to understand and analyze the various aspects of the Mishkan and its relevance to us nowadays. Students delivered informative and entertaining presentations to both 6G classes, and they also cre-ated original games and activities to reinforce their learning. The Aron group took the audience back in time to help Betzalel build the Aron according to all of its specifications and half measure-ments, the Shulchan group led the class on an interactive scaven-ger hunt through the school searching for clues that connect to the Shulchan, the Bigdei Kehuna groups created stunning models of the various garments and their functions, and the Menorah group built a real skeeball game machine shaped like the meno-rah which their classmates could play after answering a question about the menorah. While their finished products were truly outstanding, I am most proud of the girls' tremendous hard work and effort, their exemplary middos tovos in working together, and their deep and sincere love of learning which they demon-strated time and again throughout the learning process. More than once, the girls asked if they could continue their learning throughout lunch and recess! We all celebrated their wonderful accomplishments with a fun learning activity, designing a Mishkan cake and then of course we ate it!

Both 4G classes visited the Middle School lab

during their unit on Astronomy. They reviewed the movements of the Earth and Solar System and learned why the North Star, Polaris, is al-ways above us in the North sky. As a project

they made marshmallow constellations. Mrs. Balk’s Kitah Zayin: The past few weeks have been quite busy. In Chumash, we have been analyzing the purpose of Bnei Yisrael's complaints when asking Hashem for meat in the midbar and remembering the "free food" they ate in Mitzrayim. We explored Sefer Shemos to understand what their difficulty was with the mann, such a miraculous food! As we continued through the perek, Seforno clarified that even though Hashem provided the meat that they asked for, Hashem showed them how their complaints were not valid, hoping they would do teshuva. The girls continue to strengthen their Rashi skills by analyzing Rashi’s questions and how his insights are relevant to the pesukim. In Navi, we are con-tinuing our journey through Shmuel Beis, which is always eventful. Now that Dovid is finally king, one would think every-thing was great until Avner's and Yoav's men battled in a civil war. In order to make sense of the story, the class drew animated illustrations of the story and used the lashon from the pesukim as their captions. In hilchos Shabbos, we are learning about the melacha of Choresh; what is considered plowing and its practical application nowadays.

A Peek Into Our Week: ECD HIGHLIGHTS

Both 4th grade girls classes baked cookies in the shape of the map of Eretz Yisrael after learning about its

boundaries in Perek Alef of Sefer Yehoshua.
