Hello Fellow CCSHRM Members, Your 2013 Board Members are working hard to ensure that we have a fantastic year. To start, once again this year, CCSHRM is giving away 4 HR Florida Conf. Registrations; the value of each is $675.00. The HR Florida Conference is held in August and is worth your participation. Wanda will be sharing more info on this. We also want to help 4 CCSHRM members, who are not current National SHRM members, become a National SHRM Member because we value our affiliation and want our members to value their CCSHRM and National membership. Heather will be sharing more info on this program. Kathy Robinson is also working on a “Members Only” login for our website, where members will soon able to print a membership directory, view minutes and CCSHRM financial reports, among other features. Info will be sent to our current paid members soon. Reminder on renewal dues, if you lost your renewal form, please go to our website at CCSHRM.org, click on Membership link. Unpaid members and guests will not be included in the above mentioned raffles, so if you want to win, please be sure to renew your 2013 Membership as soon as you can.
See you soon. Sincerely, Lisa O’Connor

NLRB Developments
Landmark Federal Court Decision Invalidates NLRB
Recess Appointments
On January 25, 2013, the U.S. Court of Appeals for
the District of Columbia ruled in Noel Canning v.
NLRB that President Barack Obama’s three January
2012 appointees (Sharon Black, Terence Flynn, and
Richard Griffin) to the National Labor Relations
Board (NLRB) violated the Recess Appointments
Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The impact for HR
professionals is that the ruling calls into question
every decision the Board has made since January
2012, including controversial decisions on micro-
units and employer social media policies.
In addition, the recess appointment of Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau director Richard
Cordray, made at the same time, is also called into
question by this ruling. As a member of the
Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, SHRM
intervened on behalf of Noel Canning arguing that
the recess appointments were invalid. The NLRB is
expected to appeal the court’s Noel Canning
decision.

Overview on our January 2013 HR Florida Leadership Conference Attendance
HR Florida continues to wow, entertain and educate us on the most current Chapter Leadership educational program ideas and initiatives. This year, guest speaker Kathy Dempsey, her program titled SHED or YOU’RE DEAD, kicked off the conference with an introduction that featured a surprise entrance that had us all looking for “Lenny the Lizard”. Lizards shed their skin to grow… hence the program theme. She asked the audience to “look for Lenny” by looking under our chairs… and Julie Greaves, our 2013 Diversity Chair, was recognized for finding Lenny. This fun interactive portion made all our attending board members feel so lucky to be included in this way. The attached picture captures Julie and Lenny with a copy of Kathy's book. Kathy had us all laughing and crying with her presentation and truly brought home the message that "change is essential to grow".
Just before the conference ended, our attending members gathered to access what each other had learned at this year's conference. Here is a summary on just a few important things we want to share with our members. Member engagement: in keeping with our goal of engaging and recognizing our members in 2013, we decided to keep our message positive and want to know from our members on “what we do right”, so we can keep doing what our members want from their CCSHRM membership. Please email Lisa O’Connor at [email protected] We also discussed the importance of us keeping our regular meetings at the Charlotte County Cultural Center to avoid meeting location confusion for our members. Angela Brown, PHR, reported on our ability to offer a $2,000.00 Scholarship for a Master Degree in Human Resource Management from the Florida International University (FIU). We would have never known about this valuable benefit if we did not attend this year's HR Florida Leadership Conference - smile. Angela also reported that she was a recipient of a $750.00 SHRM Foundation Scholarship, which helped her pay for her HRCI Certification Training Material. As a result of this scholarship award, Angela recently took her PHR test and passed! We are so proud of her and know she will be an excellent representative and promoter in her role as Certification and Foundation chair for our Chapter!
Cheryl Vanande, Workforce Readiness chair, learned that her Workforce Readiness “Mentoring and Internship” initiatives planned for 2013 align with HR Florida’s goals. Cheryl will work with our members in getting them engaged to participate in our programs planned for 2013.
In closing, we want to thank HR Florida and all the volunteers who help conduct the annual Leadership Conference. Our Chapter values and appreciates their guidance; we may be a small chapter, but we always learn new things, walk away stronger, gain new contacts, make new friends, and leave more prepared as we continue to do BIG things for our Chapter Members because of our participation at HR Florida's Annual Leadership Conference - 2013 promises to be a very successful year for CCSHRM, thanks to your support! group pictured from left to right: CCSHRM Members: Angela Brown PHR Certification and Foundation, Julie Greaves Diversity, Lisa O'Connor President, Deb Hope Treasurer, Wanda King PHR Vice President, and Cheryl Vanande Workforce Readiness.
