JOMO Sono has been called by quite a few names in his time. He was born Ephraim Matsilele Sono- to a footballing father who was himself a legend in his time. Eric “Scara” Sono, Jomo’s fa- ther, was widely ackowledged to be one of the best footballers of his era. He was captain of Orlando Pi- rates - then playing in the non-racial South African Soccer League - when he was tragically killed in a car accident in 1964. He had nicknamed his son after the late Jomo Kenyatta, who was President of Kenya, a man he ido- lised. For the first few years of his ca- reer, the fans dubbed him “Trouble- maker” because of the difficulties he gave opposing defences. The nicknames that have stuck are “Jomo” and “The Black Prince of Soweto”, the latter given to him in recognition of his ball mastery. Eric Sono could not have dreamt that his son would follow so success- fully in his footsteps and become one of the best footballers of his era. Jomo wanted to become a boxer in his youth and says he boxed as an amateur. But he also played soccer and got a chance early to prove himself in top company. He was an instant hit, and stardom was not far away. The man who promoted Jomo to the senior Pirates team was another Pirates favourite, Alfred “Russia” Jacobs, who was still playing then. “It was a gamble,” Jacobs recalls “but we had nothing to lose. He was a gifted footballer and it was only a matter of time before he would make it.” Sono became a household name - and ranks with the all-time greats at Pirates. In 1976 he scored all four goals for a controversial “South African” team against a side of Argentinians invited to co-incide with a visit by a Fifa commission. It’s been a long, long' wait for ‘Mr Cosmos’ That feat did more wonders for his already successful career, and Sono later went to play in the North American Soccer League for New York Cosmos. There he played alongside the great Brazilian, Pele. For a few years before 1983, Sono and the Pirates’ management at the time disagreed on certain mat- ters and at one time he is said to have made an offer to buy the club. But it did not happen and he bought a second divison club, Germis- ton Callies - and renamed it Jomo Cosmos, after himself and New York Cosmos. In 1983 he bought Dion High- lands, formerly Highlands Park - one of the most successful clubs in the National Football League and the National Professional Soccer League - and incorporated it into Jomo Cosmos. Jomo approached Roy Matthews, then coach with Arcadia, to take over the reins - and Matthews did. Not long after that, Jomo per- suaded his old Pirates team-mate, Webster Lichaba, to join him at Cosmos. Today Lichaba, who has had a distinguished career, is one of the di- rectors of the club. Jomo Cosmos has come a long way since 1983 - and long years of hard work and patience were at last rewarded in 1987 when Cosmos won the Castle League championship. It was a dream come true and made up for the team’s poor luck in the 1986 Mainstay Cup final, which they lost to Sundowns after outplaying them. One of the reasons Cosmos have achieved such success is the close rela- tionship Sono has had with coach Roy Matthews. Jomo has always said that he felt Matthews was the best coach in the country - and Matthews’ track re- cord is eloquent testimony. Cosmos were the only first divi- sion club in 1987 who had kept faith with their coach for over four years. Cosmos attribute their success to their youth policy - they have always been interested in giving young players a chance, and they signed a few bright sparks in 1987. What about Jomo Sono the soc- cer administrator on the wrong side of his playing career? Sono has been for many years a businessman and has learnt much since becoming Mr Cosmos. There have been times when he has appeared uncomfortable in the tough world of professional soccer, and times when he appeared not to be making a success of things. He has often hinted at taking on the NSL establishment, but has lacked the nerve. Today he is a far more mature administrator - and seems to be at peace with himself and the league. Jomo the soccer player is some- thing of a contradiction nowadays. In the last few years he has put on a lot of weight - and that has undouted- ly affected his mobility. His critics call him fat and clum- sy. Clumsy he has sometimes been, but he has also continued to pro- duce incredible flashes of brilliance. In 1987 he was still capable of passing the ball almost magically - he is arguably one of the best passers of the ball in his era in this country. Sono has said that he is still good enough to play professional soccer in South Africa - and will re- tire only when he stops enjoying the game. Only time will tell how much longer will he last. In 1984, Sono announced he had written his autobiography, but it has not been published yet. He expects the book to finally see the light of day in 1988. We all look forward to it. Jomo Sono.

JOMO Sono has been called by quite a few names in his time. He was born Ephraim Matsilele Sono- to a footballing father who was himself a legend in his time.

Eric “Scara” Sono, Jomo’s father, was widely ackowledged to be one of the best footballers of his era.

He was captain of Orlando Pirates - then playing in the non-racial South African Soccer League - when he was tragically killed in a car accident in 1964.

He had nicknamed his son after the late Jomo Kenyatta, who was President of Kenya, a man he idolised.

For the first few years of his career, the fans dubbed him “Troublemaker” because of the difficulties he gave opposing defences.

The nicknames that have stuck are “Jomo” and “The Black Prince of Soweto”, the latter given to him in recognition of his ball mastery.

Eric Sono could not have dreamt that his son would follow so successfully in his footsteps and become one of the best footballers of his era.

He was a gifted footballer and it was only a matter of time before he would make it.”

Sono became a household name - and ranks with the all-time greats at Pirates.

In 1976 he scored all four goals for a controversial “South African” team against a side of Argentinians invited to co-incide with a visit by a Fifa commission.

It’s been a long, long' wait for ‘Mr Cosmos’

That feat did more wonders for his already successful career, and Sono later went to play in the North American Soccer League for New York Cosmos. There he played alongside the great Brazilian, Pele.

For a few years before 1983,Sono and the Pirates’ management at the time disagreed on certain matters and at one time he is said to have made an offer to buy the club.

But it did not happen and he bought a second divison club, Germis- ton Callies - and renamed it Jomo Cosmos, after himself and New York Cosmos.

In 1983 he bought Dion Highlands, formerly Highlands Park - one of the most successful clubs in the National Football League and the National Professional Soccer League - and incorporated it into Jomo Cosmos.

Jomo approached Roy Matthews, then coach with Arcadia, to take over the reins - and Matthews did.

Not long after that, Jomo persuaded his old Pirates team-mate, Webster Lichaba, to join him at Cosmos.

Today Lichaba, who has had a distinguished career, is one of the directors of the club.

One of the reasons Cosmos have achieved such success is the close relationship Sono has had with coach Roy Matthews.

Jomo has always said that he felt Matthews was the best coach in the country - and Matthews’ track record is eloquent testimony.

Cosmos were the only first division club in 1987 who had kept faith with their coach for over four years.

Cosmos attribute their success to their youth policy - they have always been interested in giving young players a chance, and they signed a few bright sparks in 1987.

What about Jomo Sono the soc

cer administrator on the wrong side of his playing career?

Sono has been for many years a businessman and has learnt much since becoming Mr Cosmos.

There have been times when he has appeared uncomfortable in the tough world of professional soccer, and times when he appeared not to be making a success of things.

He has often hinted at taking on the NSL establishment, but has lacked the nerve. Today he is a far more mature administrator - and seems to be at peace with himself and the league.

Jomo the soccer player is something of a contradiction nowadays. In the last few years he has put on a lot of weight - and that has undouted- ly affected his mobility.

His critics call him fat and clumsy. Clumsy he has sometimes been, but he has also continued to produce incredible flashes of brilliance.

In 1987 he was still capable of passing the ball almost magically - he is arguably one of the best passers of the ball in his era in this country.

Sono has said that he is still good enough to play professional soccer in South Africa - and will retire only when he stops enjoying the game.

Only time will tell how much longer will he last.

In 1984, Sono announced he had written his autobiography, but it has not been published yet.

He expects the book to finally see the light of day in 1988. We all look forward to it.

Jomo Sono.

GOLDEN OLDIE JPS Man o f th e Series

Mark Tovey with the victorious 1987 J P S winners.

Mark Tovey turns around to a s se ss the damage of an Orlando Pirates’ attack, with keeper Dave Watterson in the foreground.

MARK TOVEY

Tovey makes his MarkBUSH Bucks’ defender Mark Tovey assisted his side to clinch the JPS Knockout trophy and eventually won the JPS KO man of the series award.

Tovey, a man whose experience saw him playing for sides like Casio Dynamos and Durban City, came on to the professional scene in 1971.

Born in Pretoria in May 1955, the 32-year-old player was fortunate that his father decided to settle in Durban in 1971.

“1 joined Durban United in 1971 and moved to Durban City the following year,” he said.

At that stage, both Durban United and Durban City were still playing in the National Football League.

In 1980 he joined Casio Dynamos and the following year joined Durban City - which won the NPSL title for two successive years.

At Bush Bucks in 1987, he also assisted with the coaching duties.

Tovey is a leader in the true sense of the word. As captain, he led Dynamos in the early 1980’s, Durban City when they first won the NPSL championships and Bush Bucks in 1984.

“ 1 also assisted in the coaching department when we won the JPS Cup in 1987,” he said.

He believes that he personally had a good year at Bush Bucks.

“Although we had ups and downs, particularly in the league fixtures, our players have proved to be consistent,” he said.

“Our standard dropped a little bit because most of the players got swollen headed. They forgot that you are only as good as your last game,” said Tovey.

Tovey is praying that his side gets sponsorship, “to keep us going.”

“ If there’s no sponsorship, there tends to be a lot of problems. Wages are paid very late and players becoming unco-operative,”he said.

Five others — Rangers, Bioemfontein Celtic, Wits University, Mamelodi Sun dow ns and Jomo Cosmos — won one each.

Including the Charity tournaments and excluding the representative g a mes, 17 competitions were played.

A new ‘boost’ at Cosmos

SAsaEiZ 'C osm os’ coach Roy Matthews.

JOMO Cosmos in 1987 became the first South African soccer club involved in a research project on energy replacement products.

The project was sponsored by Leppin International, which said it would spend over R30 000 on an in- depth scientific study to benefit soccer.

The project is due to finish in 1988.

Coach Roy Matthews said the entire Cosmos team had taken various “carbo load” and energy boosting products and he had noticed the team play much more energetically in the second half of their matches.

“There is no doubt that the team’s work rate increased, and with the boys getting less tired, there was a corresponding higher level of mental alertness towards the end of the game,” he said.
