Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays
By: Emily Mildenhall
There’s always quite a bit of controversy when December comes around.
Should one be greeted with “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays?” Some
argue that saying “Merry Christmas” is offensive to those with a different
culture/religion. Although others claim that “Merry Christmas” is better, be-
cause the greeting itself is positive. Local student, Sammi Camacho, said: “By
saying "Merry Christmas," "Christ" is in there, and some religious people are
really big on that. I like Merry Christmas better, to be honest. I mean,
Christmas is all about Jesus Christ and his birth.” But another student, Don
Conner, said: “I don't think it matters what you say. I mean, if you're trying
to be politically correct, good on you; but if you say Merry Christmas, it's all
the same. You are wishing someone to have a good time, and I think people
shouldn't be so focused on how people are saying something, but on what they
are saying.” And yet, another student, Sean Peabody, said: “I say it de-
pends… If you're referring to Christmas, and just Christmas, then you should
say "Merry Christmas," obviously. If you're referring to the whole Holiday
season (Thanksgiving, New Years, Christmas, even Kwanzaa), then you can
be more inclusive; though reverence for religious holidays should be main-
tained.” So, students of Hurricane High, what do you think is more appropri-
ate?
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christ-
mas and do you know what that
means? Christmas music! Who
doesn’t love Christmas music? If for
some reason, you’re struggling with
what songs to listen to this Christmas
season, have no fear because
TimeOut.com has got your back. It
has the 50 best Christmas songs.
Some of the top ten being: ‘Do they
know it’s Christmas’-Band Aid,
‘Happy Xmas (War is over)’ -John
Lennon & Yoko Ono, ‘White Christ-
mas’ -Bing Crosby, and number one
being ‘All I want for Christmas is you’
-Mariah Carey. Happy listening and
Merry Christmas!

25 Days of Christmas!

Christmas break is coming up and that means no
school for 17 days! If you don’t have anything else
that you do daily, here are some things to do over
Christmas break:
Watch an entire series on Netflix.
Some popular shows are Grey’s Anatomy, Dexter,
Orange is the New Black, Etc.
Sleep as long as you want.
Or don’t. Waking up early can get you more out of
your break.
Take a trip to the movies with some friends.
A lot of new movies come out during winter break,
take the time to go see one.
Go Sledding, Snowboarding, or Skiing.
You’ll probably have to drive to go, but it’ll be
worth it.
Drink a lot of hot chocolate.
Mmmmmm.
I hope you’ve been nice, be-
cause it’s Christmas time
again and Santa Claus is com-
ing! Most of us have grown up
believing in Santa, but have
you ever wondered where he
came from?
The original Santa Claus was
a monk by the name of St.
Nicholas. It is said that he
was born sometime around
280 A.D. in Turkey. St. Nicholas was a very generous, kind, and giving man.
He gave away all inherited wealth and traveled to help the sick and poor.
St. Nicholas loved the little children. After many years of stories, he eventu-
ally became known as “the protector of children and sailors”.
By the time of the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular Saint in
Europe. Even as Saints became less and less popular, he maintained a posi-
tive reputation.
St. Nicholas started to become popular in America during the 18th century
when Dutch families were seen celebrating him on the day of his death. The
rest is history.. Now you know the story behind jolly Saint Nick. Merry
Christmas!

For this Christmas holiday, why don't you
make some fun and easy holiday
crafts? There are several easy home
crafts that are fun to make. Crafts
such as: ornaments with your
handprint on it, paper elves with your
face on them, paper ornaments, and
some snowmen made out of an old toi-
let paper roll. If you want to know how
to do these fun and easy crafts, you
can just type in this l ink:
http://www.woohome.com/diy-2/top-38-
easy-and-cheap-diy-christmas-crafts-
kids-can-make
While interviewing Channon
Moss, she said “If I had one
holiday craft that I would like
to make, I would probably
make some paper Christmas
trees. Once I'm done making
those I would hang them up all
over the house for everyone to
see.” So for this holiday season,
grab your little brothers and
sisters, and have fun making
some crafts for gifts.
Food is something that brings
people together. Which makes
the holidays a great time for
treats! But what kind of treats
do people like to eat? Jaden
stone says, “You know those
chocolate orange things…
mmmmm.” Rodrigo Flores says
his favorite is the classic pep-
permint candy cane, and Hope
Grogg likes homemade fudge.
Kimber Lee says she really
likes chocolate dipped pretzels.
There are tons of favorites.
Some other popular Christmas
snacks are popcorn tins, choco-
late popcorn mix, shortbread
cookies, hot chocolate, and al-
mond roca. Please snack re-
sponsibly and don’t take treats
from strangers.

The True Spirit of Christmas
By: Kolby Ray
It’s Christmas time, which means
store sales are off the charts with all
the presents being purchased. Christ-
mas decorations are everywhere,
Christmas music is blaring, and the
sweet smell of sugar and spice is all
around. Sadly, it’s like people have
forgotten what Christmas is all about.
This world has portrayed Christmas
as a time to receive presents, and
that’s it. They are forgetting the im-
portant things about Christmas;
Things like giving, love, family, joy,
and just being happy all around.
There is no greater joy than making
someone's day by helping them. Giv-
ing is definitely more enjoyable than
receiving. It leaves a different feeling
inside. Giving doesn’t just mean buy-
ing a present and giving it to someone,
but it can be as simple as giving some-
body your time, your love, and your
friendship. Merry Christmas!

New Years Resolutions
By: Meagan Brohn
The time of year is coming up where everyone
starts thinking about new beginnings, and
starts to set some new goals. A new year's reso-
lution is a tradition to some, and most of the
time they are the same each year. Some people
come up with crazy goals, while others are sim-
ple. Some of the most popular new year's reso-
lutions are:
Lose some weight and get fit
Quit a habit
Pick up a new hobby
Travel to new places
Make new friends
Finding a good new years resolution for your-
self might not be so easy, just think about
something that you want to change and set a
goal to change it. Achieving the goal may be
harder, but if you stick to it and work hard you
can end up with a great outcome. So what will
your new year's resolution for 2016 be?
Reason for the Season
By: Jaden Stone
With all of the toys and excitement that
come with the Christmas season, it is easy
to forget why we are celebrating this won-
derful holiday. Ramsie Barney stated, “I
love Christmas because of the feeling that
I get as serve those around me. There is
nothing that can replace that joy.”
Through Ramsie’s example, we know that
as we serve those in the community we
may enjoy this season of giving all the
more. As we look inward less and look
outward more we start to understand the
true meaning of Christmas. Christmas
originated from Jesus Christ's birth. In
Luke chapter two of the Holy Bible it
states, “For unto you is born this day in
the city of David a Saviour, which is
Christ the Lord.” As we take off the suffix
-mas which means a day of mass, or a day
that we come together, we can focus on
Christ, the true reason for the season. As
we focus on the true meaning of Christ-
mas, we may find joy and happiness.
Girl’s basketball tipped off on the
first of December when they played
Beaver. The team leaders are confi-
dent in this year's upcoming sopho-
more class. Carrie Marshall, a sen-
ior, stated, “I am confident in the
team that we have this year and I
am excited to finish out my high
school experience with the girls that
I have with me on the team.” The
entire senior class is ready to make
a roar in our Tiger Cage! Includ-
ing senior, Morgan Huntsman,
who said, “We have four senior
starters who have been playing
varsity for three years now so I
think we have the potential of
becoming a great team this year.”
She also encouraged the students
to get involved and come support
our Tiger Army.

Boys basketball is ready to take off
this year. With the head coach being
Todd Langston, JV coach Jeff Steven-
son, and Sophomore coach Jay Lang-
ston. One of the team’s strong points is
sharing the ball. Reagan Hinton, a sen-
ior here at Hurricane High School said,
“As long as we play as a team, we will
do good this year. If we make the extra
pass, then we will have an easier shot.
You can’t just expect to be successful.
Success is achieved by putting in the
work while everybody else is party-
ing.”
The basketball team is looking for-
ward to the season and all the hard
work. Hinton also said, “The harder
you work, the better you will be, and
you will always miss 100% of the
shots you didn’t take.” Make sure to
go out and support the Hurricane
High boys basketball team and cheer
them on throughout their season.

Saturday, December 5th, two teams from Hurri-
cane competed in a unique fashion show at the St. George
Art Museum. Each team was required to make a dress
completely from scratch. No patterns could be used. It had
to have something on it that was twisted, woven, spun, or
wrapped and some sort of recycled material.
The first team from Hurricane designed a Steampunk
Dress that had a woven corset that was made from the
leather of an old couch. The skirt was made of an old
paint drop cloth and the same leather. There were real
gears on the dress and was complete with a top hat. The
model for this dress was Kira Brown. The Team included
Ashlyn Mecham, Morgan Mecham, Nate Crawford, Jane
Ward, June Jennings, and Grace Starling.
The second team from Hurricane designed an Airplane
Dress that had a woven top made from plastic and an old
paint drop cloth. The skirt was made of paper airplanes
and spray paint. The dress had jewelry made from hot
glue and was complete with a paper airplane hair piece.
The model for this dress was Jojo Ferguson. The Team
included Sarah Perry, Sariah Nielson, and Annie Bistline.
Congratulations to both teams on their great designs and
the Airplane Dress winning the Judges Choice Award!
White Christmas
Twisted, Woven, Spun, and Wrapped
White Christmas is the play that our school
has put on as our Winter musical. This play,
based off the movie of the same namesake,
takes place in the state of Vermont where two
army buddies Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are
traveling to a big show in Florida. However,
on their way there, they stumble upon the
Haynes sisters and instead of going to their
show in Florida, they team up with the sisters
to perform at an inn with the hopes of doing
their old general a favor. Preston Butler was
very courageous in taking on the lead role as
Bob Davis because he had no experience prior
to the role. However, he ended up doing a
fantastic job with his first lead. Butler not
only lent his great singing skills to the pro-
duction, but he also put his kissing talents to
work with his love interest of the play,
Cameryn Sorge. Butler’s casting as the lead
was a shock because his talent was so hidden
that even his dad hadn’t known about it until
he had heard him
singing in the play.
When asked what
she thought about
the play, Morgan
Penrod replied, ¨I
thought they did a
really good job with
the set and the act-
ing, I am also very
impressed with
Preston and his
singing because I
have been friends
with him since the
2nd grade and never knew that he could sing
that well!¨ Our drama department works day
in and day out putting on these amazing
shows for us and we should do our very best to
go and support them for all of their great
shows!

Every year on December 31st New York does their tradi-
tional ball drop. The ball drop is a huge thing for not just
the New Yorkers, but for everyone in the United States.
At the drop, thousands of people stand around for hours
just waiting for the ball to descend. The ball is dropped in
Times Square and is an amazing experience for all that
see it. The ball drop is important for everyone in America
because it signifies that the new year is here. The new
year is a great time to change, set new goals, and some-
times, be a completely different person. People also love
the new year because they feel like it is a new start, a
time to do something better. When posed with the ques-
tion: Why do you like New Years? Sophomore, Colby Ir-
vine stated, “I like New Years because I get to be out of
school and
party with my
family in-
stead.” There
are a lot of
fun things to
do and, it is
break so get
out there and
enjoy it.

Is Santa really black? This alternate
Santa Claus was established in the
1900’s by a group named the Black
Panthers. The Black Panthers was a
comic strip made by Henry Mancini.
The failure of the comic strip lead to
the civil rights activist movement
which lead to the Black Santa. This
Santa lives not at the North Pole, but
at the summit of the Compton rubbish dump.
And he doesn't feed off of milk and cookies,
he feeds off fried chicken and koolaid. In the
workshop of Black Santa, there is only black
Santa, Mrs. Claus, and gangsters wearing elf
attire. So be naughty, not nice this Christmas
season; and listen for the bus coming down
the street, because Black Santa is coming to
town.

According to Wikipedia, an internet meme is “an ac-
tivity, concept, catchphrase or piece of media that
spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via
the Internet.” A few examples include: Planking,
Doge, Forever Alone, and Harlem Shake vines.
Memes have been around for several years, although
it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when they first came to
be. 2015 has been quite an eventful year for memes.
It’s nearly impossible to go online without seeing a
reference to shoving bread sticks in your purse, or jet
fuel not being able to melt steel beams. Kelly Has-
tings said, “I liked the ‘Mmm Whatcha Say’ meme;
but most of them are pretty stupid.” A few notewor-
thy memes include Rare Pepe, What Are Those,
Winking Rihanna, and of course, John Cena. But the
year of 2015 is coming to a close; so if you have any
meme ideas that you’d like to get out before the end
of the year,

Foreign Exchange Students:
Pollution Causes Red Alert in Beijing

. Throughout our high school years, we will see and
sometimes get to know at least one foreign exchange
student. Here at Hurricane High School, we have a few
different foreign exchange students. The purpose of the
foreign exchange program is to bring students to the
United States to experience life in America but, it also
allows American students to go to other countries.
The foreign exchange student program is a wonderful
program. The first step in the programs process is that
the student is usually recruited by the exchange organi-
zation based in their home country. Then, the student is
given the country they will be going. One of the last
steps is to find a host family and school. Finally, the
student is sent off to the country. When interviewed
about what they thought about the program, Hope
Grogg said, “I think it is a good program because it
helps the students get to know how other countries are
run and how things work instead of only knowing how
their home country is run.” Hailey Jammet said, “I
think that the foreign exchange program is a wonderful
way to receive culturally different life experiences and
expand one's knowledge and overall perspective. Being
a student involved in the foreign exchange program
would be an incredible opportunity and life changing
experience that I would never forget.”
Brevard County deputies of Melbourne, Florida have deter-
mined that 22-year-old Matthew Riggins was killed by an
alligator while hiding from law enforcement near Barefoot
Bay. Riggins was a suspect in a burglary on November 23.
Investigators say that Riggins told his girlfriend that he
was going to commit burglaries with another suspect who
is now in custody. According to police, the suspect in custo-
dy is not cooperating with the law. Officers responded to
calls in Barefoot Bay on Nov. 13 that there were two men
dressed in black walking behind houses in the area, who
ran from responding officers. Later that day, Riggins was
reported missing to the Palm Bay Police Department. Po-
lice searching the area say that they heard yelling that
night but couldn’t identify
where the yelling was com-
ing from says Major Tod
Goodyear. 10 days later
Riggins’ body was found at
the bottom of the lake by
the sheriff’s dive team.
"When the body was found,
it had injuries that were
consistent with an alligator
attack," Goodyear said. "We
had trappers euthanize the
gator and when we opened
it up, there were some re-
mains inside that were con-
sistent with injuries found
on the body."

China issued its first Red Alert after choking smog
was projected to descend throughout the city. 30% of
government cars and over half of Beijing's private
cars were ordered off the road. Outdoor construction
sites will cease operations, but only some industrial
plants will have to implement measures to limit or
stop production. The Environmental Protection Bu-
reau has banned all fireworks and barbecues.
Chinese social media users deemed the govern-
ment’s protection measures lackluster. Many argued
that the measures inconvenienced people without
dealing with the real sources of smog. Monday’s Red
Alert came just a week after a thick grey haze
shrouded the city with concentrations of PM2.5.

Hey there Delilah,
My heart has recently been crushed, football was my life for four years and now it is gone. It was all I ever
worked for and everything I did was to prepare for football. I don’t know what to do with my time or life,
please help me.
Sincerely, Depressed Football Retiree
Dear Depressed Football Retiree,
I’m sorry that you are feeling crushed about football being over. Maybe try joining another sport like Wres-
tling, Basketball, or Track to fill up some of the extra time that you have! Start a new series on Netflix that
has multiple seasons! You can also try new things like drawing, reading, or doing homework!
Sincerely, Delilah
Hey there Delilah,
I’m Jewish, and I feel very left out at this time of year because everyone in this school is Christian. They
even put up a tree to celebrate Christmas, but no one cares to put up a Menorah (candle stick for Hanuk-
kah). I feel very excluded from the community. What should I do?
Sincerely, Your Local Rabbi
Dear Local Rabbi,
It can be hard to be the one person that has different beliefs from the majority. It is okay to be different,
though and you can always put up your own Menorah! Don’t be afraid to stand out, And if you want to put
up more Menorah for Hanukkah, then go ahead! You can put them up just like the Christians put their
trees up. Have a Happy Hanukkah!
Sincerely, Delilah
Hey there Delilah,
A tradition that my family has had for 8 years cannot be carried out anymore because the play won’t be in
town. I am very upset. What can I do to keep the tradition up?
Sincerely, Desperate Tradition Keeper
Dear Desperate Tradition Keeper,
Look up the name of the play and find it in a city that is nearby. You might have to drive for a little while to
get there but you will be able to keep the tradition! Or if you can’t find it anywhere close then you can al-
ways adapt the tradition by going to a different play, or putting on the play with your family!
Sincerely, Delilah
