V6 Roar ~ December 2016 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to All Christmas Greetings to all readers of our V6 Roar Newsletter. Here we are into the sixth month of our current Lions 2016-2017 year. It is the month of the year when we enjoy a special time with our family and friends and Margaret and I would like to extend our best wishes to all Lions and their Partners, Lionesses, Leo’s and friends, a Happy and Peaceful Christmas to you all. By the end of this month Lion Margaret and I will have visited 54 of our V6 District Clubs which has been an absolute Honour and pleasure to do, and we are continually amazed at what fantastic projects the Clubs and its Members do for their Community and Lions Clubs International. On behalf of all of our V6 Districts Cabinet Members and myself, I thank you all. Unfortunately our District Membership is showing a minus of 16 for this year so far, even though we have gained 55 New Members, so it is important to keep on inviting prospective members to our Clubs activities and Dinner Meetings, with the hope that they may also join our Lions family as a Volunteer Member. In order to help Clubs achieve an increase in membership, Past District Governor Alan Fluck from V5 has again organised another V District committee to arrange a March to May Membership Drive Campaign. A brochure with competition, and Membership enquiry details will be sent to all of our V District Clubs when details have been finalised. Past District Governor Stephen Kazenwadel is our V6 District representative on this committee, he has already been to Zone Meetings to alert Clubs about the forthcoming Membership Campaign. The most important action that will be required from clubs, when this Campaign starts (or at any time), will be to follow up on “ALL APPLICATIONS” that are directed to them regarding “New Member Inquiries”. While on our Official Club Visits we have been pleased to hear that the Clubs in our V6 District are making every effort to support the request from International President Chancellor Bob Corlew, to provide a Centennial Legacy Project for their Community. Some of the Clubs are also arranging BBQ’s and Media Coverage at the “unveiling of their gift” to the Community, so as to highlight our Lions Volunteer Organisations 100 TH Year of serving those in need Worldwide. Our thanks “and well done” to the Clubs that have been supporting the “Dairy Farmers Crisis” by delivering food hampers where they are required. Thank you to Barooga Club President Linda Ryder and Darren Laffan for keeping us informed of what the Lions from their surrounding clubs, and other volunteers have been doing on their “Christmas Hamper Delivery Run”, which can be viewed on the Barooga Facebook Page. Our sincere thanks also goes to the Companies and Organisations and Lions Clubs that have supported this drive with their gifts and donations, this appreciation has also been acknowledged by Lion Darren Laffan on their Clubs Facebook Page. It again upholds our Lions Motto “WE SERVE”. Wishing everyone a “Safe and enjoyable Christmas”. Happy Members = Happy Club and Having Fun Whilst “We Serve”

V6 Roar ~ December 2016 2

The Party of a Century “I celebrate myself,” the great poet Walt

Whitman wrote.

Lions have been doing a lot of that as our Centennial approaches in June. Lions in New England saluted our anniversary on a scoreboard during the Patriot’s first football game this season. Texas Lions threw a birthday bash at a hotel and celebrated with a decorated cake, flags, horns and 100 balloons. The landon Lions Club in Pennsylvania welcomed hundreds of people for free food, music, raffles and children’s games and wisely let people know who Lions are and what we do.

Age is a funny thing. We celebrate every birthday when young, approach birthdays with hesitancy and black humour in middleage and then throw on the party hats once again when we achieve the milestones of later years. So it has been and should be with Lions clubs. We turn 100 only once. Let’s appreciate who we are and what we’ve done, and let’s be sure to let the public be a part of our celebration as well. We’re not self-contained, after all. We exist because of needs in our neighbourhoods. Let our neighbours join us in our revelry.

Here are some easily achievable ways to mark our birthday: fly the Lions flag on or before June 7. Honour the longest-serving Lion in your club or district. Make a centennial banner with “100” across it and place faces of Lions where an “O” is.

Be sure to share your efforts on social media and

use #Lions100. Do a service project such a Centennial dance marathon, a birthday cake bake-off or distribute meals to those in need and include a special Centennial treat. Connect with your community by having a Centennial float in a parade, donating 100 books to the library or stuffing 100 backpacks for children and include a Lions item. Invite new members by holding a celebration luncheon with community leaders, ask 100 potential members to attend a service projector or host a party with a 1917 or 2017 theme.

You don’t have to devise your own Centennial materials. Club Supplies at Lions Clubs International has entennial party supplies, banners, posters and flyers. LCI knew our milestone was coming and is fully prepared to help you party in style! I’ve talked to many Lions excited about the Centennial, and multitudes of members plan to come to Chicago June 3 to July 4 for our huge Centennial convention. Please take part in the celebration. After all, you are who we are celebrating. Lions make Lions Clubs what it is, of course.

I celebrate myself indeed. Enjoy this special year and thank you for your service. From the Australian Lion Magazine.

Countdown to OUR Celebrations In June 2017, Lions International will turn 100 and the mood is building for a year of excitement

Chicago (www.facebook.com/lions2017chicago) from June 30 to July 4. All the plenary sessions, voting, exhibits, educational seminars and the International Show will be at one venue - McCormick Place located on Chicago’s lake front, with the traditional Lions International Parade of Nations through the commercial district of Chicago on Saturday, July 1.

AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF LIONS

While Chicago is the birthplace of Lions International, in 2017 we are also celebrating the 70th anniversary of Lions in Australia. In 1947 William R.Tresise established Lions here with the first club opening in Lismore in northern NSW. While serving as National President of Apex and nearing 40, the compulsory retirement age of that organisation, Bill Tresise unsuccessfully urged the formation of a senior Apex movement.

By luck, he later met with a past International President of Lions and a Lions club was mooted in Lismore in NSW, where he ran a plaster and hardware business. The club was an instant success and in 1948 a second club was launched, in Murwillumbah, followed by Melbourne in 1952. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Looking Forward, Looking Back

“Looking Forward Looking Back” is Council Chairman Rodd Chignell’s theme for the 65th Multiple District Convention to be held in Hobart, Tasmania in May, 2017

A wonderful theme allowing us to look back over 100 years of Lions Clubs International and the many significant achievements as we celebrate our Centennial and to celebrate 70 years of Lions in Australia. Looking forward our organisation has many challenges

ahead and the Convention in May will be the ideal forum to plan ahead.

Now that District Conventions are out of the way – it’s time for you to plan to be in Hobart at the MD201 65th National Convention – Friday May 5th to 8th May 2017 – PUT IT IN YOUR BOOK.

The event venue, The Wrest Point Entertainment and Convention Centre, will provide for all Convention activities under the one roof. Wrest Point have been amazing with their support over the last couple of years as we plan for Convention 2017. They have accepted our sponsorship proposal to be our major Event Sponsor

and they are delivering on their commitment as we go to print.

Many will have fond memories of our 1993 and 2003 Conventions hosted at Wrest Point and the professional way they handled our Conventions.

The feedback is that a lot of our Lions are looking at Hobart to renew old acquaintances as well as taking the opportunity to finish tours they started at our last Convention in Tassie.

SO COME ON DOWN TO HOBART TO HAVE A LION

OF A TIME – SEE YOU ALL AT THE BALL

Dear Lions, Lioness & Leos,

Our thoughts go out to all those effected by earthquake in Indonesia. In times of crisis, Lions are often among the first to offer supplies of food, water, temporary shelter, and clothing.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is right there beside them, ready to support their efforts with fundraising assistance through disaster relief grant programs.

I have been notified that LCIF has responded first with an Emergency Grant of US$10,000.00.

Then within hours of receiving this the President Chancellor Corlew and LCIF Chairperson Dr. Yamada have now also approved a US$100,000.00 Major Catastrophe grant for Multiple District 307 Indonesia.

Lions Members of Australia we once again ask you for assistance to help the people out that has been effected by this terrible earthquake.

Remembering that only a couple of weeks ago our neighbours across the ditch also suffered a tragedy in an earthquake, LCIF was there to assist them also.

Your generous donation to the LCIF Disaster Relief Fund will enable much needed assistance to be given to Disaster related projects throughout

the world including New Zealand and Indonesia. Send your cheque in Australian Dollars to your District Cabinet Treasurer. This donation is eligible for a Melvin Jones Fellow or a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

100% of every dollar donated to LCIF goes to

the people in need.

Lions, Lioness’s & Leo’s please help those in need.

Yours in Lionism,

Tom Becker

BAROOGA

A convoy filled with Christmas cheer has been winding its way across the state, delivering special goods to dairy farmers across Victoria.

The Burrumbuttock Hay Runners and Lions of Australia’s Christmas hamper run saw 10 volunteers load up the Hay Run truck in Cobram, which set out bearing gifts, handmade Christmas cards, toys and luxury food items including chocolates, Christmas cakes and Christmas treats, to be delivered to dairy farmers who were doing it tough.

The project is an initiative of the Barooga Lions Club, which has been running a similar campaign locally to deliver hampers to dairy farmers.

The idea was born after partnering with the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners’ founder Brendan Farrell and Lions Australia, with local Strathmerton and Katamatite Lions clubs also jumping on board.

The truck and minibus full of volunteers set out from Cobram early Saturday morning, visiting Rochester, Toolamba, Warnambool, Mortlake, Leongatha, Maffra, Longwarry and back to Cobram on Monday evening.

The drive, which took three days, has garnered more than 80000 views on the Lions’ Facebook page, and 367000 views and trending in the top 20 in Australia on the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners’ page.

Barooga Lions Club president Linda Ryder said the group had delivered 520 hampers, as well as toys, gumboots and 520 handmade Christmas cards by Connie Fazzolari and her friends.

‘‘We’ve done all the planning in the past seven weeks, from when we partnered with the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners to do it,’’ Mrs Ryder said.

‘‘If you told me seven weeks ago that we could do this — I knew we could do this, but I never

thought it would be this big, with so much stuff.

‘‘We couldn’t fit any more in the trailer.’’

Mrs Ryder said the response from the communities had been ‘‘amazing’’.

‘‘The Lions clubs have been amazing and some of the hampers have already gone out,’’ she said.

‘‘The support we’ve had along the way has been amazing.

‘‘We just wanted to spread some Christmas cheer, and show people that yes, the dairy crisis is still happening.

‘‘We also wanted to let the dairy farmers know that there are people out there who are still thinking about them.’’

Mrs Ryder thanked the Burrumbuttock Hay Run, Lions of Australia, Ritchies IGA Cobram, Worklocker, Bata, Visy/Kelloway Industries, Big W Shepparton, Brian Hicks Transport, Need for Feed Gippsland and Cardwells of Numurkah.

She also thanked the local community for their support.

The Barooga Lions Club is also hosting a Christmas lunch on Christmas day for dairy farming families.

Article from the Cobram Courier

BAROOGA

Deputy Leader of the Nationals, Steph Ryan has welcomed a move by Canberra to give community groups, i rural and remote Australia, the opportunity to apply directly for Government funding. Ms Ryan sais the guidelines for $1 Billion " Building Better Resources Fund" realised last week by Federal Regional Development Minister Fiona Nash, allowed small community groups to apply directly. Capital cities have been excluded from applying to the funds. This is an important step from the Commonwealth as it gives groups an opportunity to directly apply for important community projects. Funding is available for the construction of new infrastructure or the upgrading of existing infrastructure, as well as community building activities such as local events, strategic regional planning, leadership and capability building activities that deliver economic benefits to regional and remote communities. Community groups can download guidelines at:

BEECHWORTH ~ YARRAWONGA

Turban Angels Milestone Event

On Saturday 10th December the Yarrawonga Lions Club Turban Angels took to the road at the invitation of the Beechworth Lions club to raise funds for the "Made with Love "Turban Project. Project Mum, Debbie and 10 of her angels, loaded with free turbans and promotional material left Yarrawonga on Friday and drove to Beechworth to promote their project and attend a "Shave for the Project " event.

Two members of the Beechworth Lions Club, Josie Cornish and Chris Brine had volunteered to have their heads shaved, which was carried out by Hairdressers Lucy Tozer and Kristie Bright, with proceeds being donated to the "Turban Project". The shave highlighted the enormity of the project with the 6,000th turban being placed on Josie's freshly-shaven head.

Beechworth Lions spent weeks preparing for this event, not only for the shave for a cure but also in the way of donations to look after the well deserved Turban Angels.

Heidi Freeman donated accommodation at "The Lakeside Chalet" a value of $1,500, Sophie Dowdy donated an $800 food and beverage package from the "Empire Hotel", there were 3 hampers made to be raffled along with Ghost tours for everyone, and so it goes on. On the day there was a cake stall and a sausage sizzle in the main street, where the very public shave took place.

Everyone wanted to help this amazing cause. In total over $6,000 was collected and donated. The community of Beechworth really got behind this event and they should be very proud of their community spirit.

Proceeds from this event will be put to good use with the aim of purchasing sewing machines and overlockers for all the angels as at present some of the ladies are still bring their machines from home to the weekly sewing bee held at the Yarrawonga Lions Clubrooms.

The Yarrawonga Club is extremely proud of their "Made with Love "Turban Project and all that the girls have achieved in their 18 months.

KERANG

Our Christmas party at the Lions Den last night was a great success! Everyone had an excellent meal and had great fellowship!

Thanks very much to John Poole, Jeff Jackson and LL Cheryl for helping set up, to John and Jeff for cooking and to all the ladies who brought salads and sweets and to all who helped clean up!

Team effort! We need to keep using the Den more as it is such an asset to our Club! Lion Faye Burton announced our new driver Reviver sponsor - Toll Holdings, so that the project can continue!

Big weekend for Kerang Lions!

Did our Market BBQ a few weeks early due to Xmas! Thanks to all the workers who helped set up, cook, serve and clean up! Big job! Sunday saw us set up early for Carols.

This year we served outside the van under shade shelters which worked well! Able to serve more people quickly and keep the waiting lines down!

Thanks again to all the workers who helped set up, cook, serve food, sell candles and drinks and help clean up! Great team effort!

Clubs that can work together well are a happy club! Excellent crowds and fireworks were very good!

Building houses and playing "duck duck goose" with the kids in the village was a very satisfying accomplishment for our students.

The village families were all then presented with house warming gifts before a large "family" photo was taken. What a day! Well done Rotary Club of Kerang Schoolies Alternative2016 students and leaders.

Pyramid Hill Lions member, Ash Miller was a member of the team supporting the students who went on the trip that will change not only the lives of the people they have assisted but the lives of the students as well.

COHUNA LEITCHVILLE On Thursday 1st December Leitchville Lions

gathered to celebrate the year and enjoy a meal

together at the home of Lion Alan Dunne. A

wonderful ‘Christmas Feast’ was prepared by Chief

Gabby (Alan’s daughter) which was enjoyed by all.

Santa dripped by to distribute gifts to all in

attendance, and enjoyed a bit of Lions fruit cake too.

Bunnings BBQ’s are a great fundraiser and an

opportunity to get our and meet many different

people.

On Thursday 8th we cooked under very poor

conditions as the winds played havoc with the tent,

while Santa visited the store

On Saturday 11th members along with a couple of

ring-ins, fronted up again to cook the Snags.

Among the very many visitors to the BBQ tent

during the day, was a very mischievous Dinosaur,

named Toby.

“Toby”

managed to

Its that time of year when we get to recognise the achievements of some of the younger members of our community.

On Sunday 11th December VDG Norm & Lion Lee attended the St Mary's Grade 6 Graduation Mass and presented Tess Doyle with a Scholarship . Lion Keith attended the Cohuna Consolidates Primary School to present Jenna Baxter with a Scholarship.

This Scholarship is in memory Lion and founding member Dr Peter Graham, in honour of his outstanding service to the community. Congratulations Tess and ,all the very best for your future.

President Allan attended the Cohuna Secondary College Awards night to present Nicholas McLaughlin with a Scholarship honouring Lion Jim Lennan, who was the Principal at the College and long time Lion member.

Our Scholarship is in memory Lion and founding member Dr Peter Graham, in honour of his outstanding service to the community. This years winner was Tess Doyle who exhibited these qualities during her time at St Mary's. Congratulations Tess and all the very best for your future.

Santa has been out and about in Cohuna, visiting the primary school, nursing home and even made it to the Carols at the Village handing out lollies to all around.

The Walla Club recently added two shade structures to their Lions Park, these now provide shade to the table and seats either side of the electric barbecue.

Now the seating, barbecue and the children's play ground all have protection from the sun.

The Club decided that the new additions would be dedicated as a Centennial Community Project and have added the appropriate signage ( as pictured).

An unveiling and dedication is in the planning for the new year sometime.

The Club is hoping to have a distinguished Lion, along with the Mayor of the Greater Hume shire, to officially open the new additions to our park.

Both the Australian Lions Foundation and the Greater Hume Shire provided the Walla Club with substantial grants to help with this project.

As well as 2017 being the centenary of Lions Clubs International, it is also the 40th year of community service for the Lions Club of Walla Walla.

The Club is very proud to still have two charter members working for the Club, those being President Jeff Grosse and Lion Wilf Krause, this important mile stone will be celebrated in 2017

This year he has sold 40 x 1.5kg cakes and 15 x 900gm puddings, which he delivered to the residents. He had put an order sheet up in both club houses for the cakes and puddings for about six weeks prior to delivery, letting the residents know when he would be delivering them.

As the Australian Lionsonoz Club does not have any fundraising facilities, Lion John sells the Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings on behalf of the Lions Club of Ormeau Inc., which is close to where he lives.

Lion John’s “profit” is the hours he can claim, assisting a main stream Lions Club. Next year he is going to try something different if the Craft Ladies will let him.

Around the end of November each year the village Ladies Craft Group have an annual market day where all groups within the village can sell anything that they make, nothing can be brought in that is not made in the village and there are some very talented people living in there, from woodwork,

painting, sewing, quilting, card making, jewellery etc. He is going to ask them if they can forego the cost of having a stall, and bringing goods in that are not made here, so that he can sell the cakes and puddings, it is assumed he could increase his sales by a fair amount by doing this.

Lion John is pictured here delivering Lions cakes and puddings to the residents using his golf buggy as a “Christmas sleigh”.

V6 Roar ~ December 2016 15

We are very excited to be host club for the State LEO Conference to be held on 26th February 2017. We have invited all LEO’s from across the Victoria to come and visit the country as the last two conferences have been held in Melbourne.

This is an opportunity to showcase our town, but what LEO’s are doing around the country.

Thanks,

Jazzy Burke

BANALLA COHUNA

On Friday 25th November 2016, LEO Jazzy Burke

attended a White Ribbon Day Breakfast at Government House as a representative of Benalla Leo Club.

She was invited as our club took the oath this year to become White Ribbon Day Supporters. Jazzy is a student at FCJ College.

“It was such an honour to meet The Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency The Honourable Linda Dessau, and to hear a moving speech by White Ribbon Founder Dr Michael Kaufman. Both spoke passionately about the progress of the organisation and talked about the day being a day of sadness and celebration” Jazzy said

She also had the pleasure to meet the Governor’s husband Anthony Howard and White Ribbon Ambassador Andrew O’Keefe.

For two years now we have been working on the

redevelopment of a court yard area at our local

Retirement Village. To start with, it was a lot of

work, removing all the overgrown plants, fern

house and rubble.

Keeping the weeds out of the garden beds, with

all the rain has been a frustrating job.

Now we are ready for stage two of this

redevelopment. The beautification of the area,

thanks to our Grant Guru Elaine (LEO Mum), we

have received a grant from FRRR that will allow

us to purchase the big items, like the new table,

seats and water feature.

This is a long term project, but we can now see

some results for our efforts. This final stage will

be our “Centennial Service & Legacy Project”

Of course, we have been cooking are famous

Donuts and helping the Lions out during the

“Gannawarra Toy Run”. We cooked a BBQ tea

for the Basketball ‘end of season’ finals, under

our new shade tent. What a way to advertise our

Club to the town.

We presented our first “Scholarship” award at the

Cohuna Consolidates School Grade 6

Graduation night where we catered for 80 people.

the “NEWS” section on the District website for

There is lots to do while at the Camp, so put the

date in your diary now, encourage members to

come along and enjoy meeting up and having the

opportunity to develop new projects, ideas and

make new friends.

On Saturday 26 November 2016, DGE Norm and myself had the privilege of attending the 2016 Loddon Murray Youth Leadership Program Graduation Evening.

We were there in support of a very special LEO, Annette Waters (Rochester).

This evening was the culmination of a nine month community leadership journey undertaken by these young people to developing skills, knowledge, confidence and networks to make a difference within their communities.

As part of the training, entrants had to develop a program that would impact youth. Annette’s program is our “Camp LEO” event.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Annette on her graduation. We need more youth like Annette, who are keen to get involved, stand up and have a go to make their community better.

Norm and I also had the pleasure of visiting both Rochester and Benalla LEO clubs meetings over the past weeks. Thanks to their Advisors and Clubs for the ongoing support of your LEO club members.
