Our Michigan Accordion Society President spends a day at the Michigan State Capitol entertaining state representatives and was welcomed with open arms and was told this is the first time they seen an Accordion on the house of representatives floor! The Michigan Accordion Society President along with members of the “Corro Italiano” Italian folk singing group celebrated Columbus Day in Michigan performing for many Michigan State Representatives at the State Capitol building on October 1, 2014. Mr. Recchia said "it was wonder-ful celebrating our Italian Heritage in grand style with many great people and very special friends and I was so excited to learn that Capitol officials advised this was the first time an Ac-cordion was ever on the House Floor!" Very Happy and pleased to report that the Michigan Accordion Society reached a significant milestone this quarter. The Board had set a goal back early this year to reach "500" Facebook Likes by the end of the 2014 CY. We are very pleased to advise that we reached and exceeded our goal 2 months ahead of schedule. Without your support and help we would have never reached this significant goal! This will help make marketing our events much easier going forward and could help in higher turnouts at our Monthly Music Event! We are now ranked as one of the largest Face Book Ac-cordion Societies in the world!

On behalf of our Board, Officers and Members, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!

THE SEPTEMBER ACCORDION LESSON

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BABY part II Bob Berta

The last newsletter discussed routine maintenance and care to prolong the life of your accordion. I promised to follow

up with some ideas to address the most likely time your accordion will suffer major damage….when it is transported.

While we all know that you shouldn’t leave your accordion in a parked car in hot sun or freezing weather...how many

of you know that there is a correct way to put your accordion in your car? The best way is to put your accordion with

its front facing the ground. That is because the jarring going over bumps can make all the Stradella bass mechanism

move due to gravity at the same time and some of the bass buttons might get sucked into the board they protrude

through. This can result in your worst nightmare. Having to fish out up to 120 buttons in the worst jig puzzle you ever

saw….time to call your repair person and dig into your wallet. Putting your case in with the carry handle up in the air is

a bit better but why take chances.

Now you face the next challenge….sending your accordion somewhere through UPS or FED EX...or even more nail

biting ...taking it on an airplane. While there are many ways you can protect your accordion outer shell from damage

such as thick cardboard boxes, foam “peanuts” cardboard blocking the bass mechanism from moving, etc. The real

danger is the effects of gravity on the stuff inside your accordion. When your baby is dropped or thrown around by

luggage handlers, the sudden jolt can tear your accordion innards loose. Your precious reed blocks and bass mechanism

are all heavy, delicate components that are supported by simple wood screws into very thin wood,.

There are a few suggestions from others I can pass on. First….if you send via UPS etc. make sure you have adequate

insurance and tell them this is a very delicate musical instrument.. When I moved to Michigan from California I sent

three of my accordions ahead of my actual move via the Mayflower moving company I used for all my household pos-

sessions. That is probably the safest method as those companies are VERY good at moving delicate property. You

could probably go to one of those companies and ask them to add your accordion to another shipment. My other very

fine concert converter free bass accordion needed to be sent out when I finally moved from Calif. I decided I would

NOT fly it but instead took it with me by train so I could keep my eye on it the whole time (yeah call me paranoid).

Supposedly musicians have been so worried about damage to musical instruments that some airlines will now allow

you to take them in the plane with you and stored in some limited storage space. You may want to check on that. A

good friend who is a professional accordionist from Rome, Italy came out for a series of concerts at many clubs in the

US. His first stop was in San Francisco. He wanted to buy another seat just so he could strap his accordion in place.

The airline talked him out of it saying they would take care of it. Needless to say his custom concert Bayan was full of

broken parts when he got to the US and his entire concert was canceled.

I know of one musician who had custom cases made to hold the treble part in one box and the bass in another. He

would pull the bellows pins and put the treble side in luggage and the bass side (most fragile) in carry-on luggage.

While we are familiar with the Roland electronic accordions. They are a lot less subject to this type of damage as they

don’t have reeds and their bass buttons can’t get “sucked”. In addition they are so common that often there is someone

that would be willing to loan theirs for a special gig.

Val was a dear friend of mine and a keystone of the San Francisco Accordion Club. She enjoyed playing both piano accordion

and Austrian style diatonic button accordion. She also played on some of their accordion ensembles. Sadly she left a giant

void in that club when she passed away a while back. She wrote this cute piece and I found it in my music collection. It

brought back fond memories and I thought I would share it with you as a tribute to her. Bob Berta

IS YOUR ACCORDION IN TUNE?

If you have a photo of one of your performances or a special interest photo and would like it posted on our Newsletter or Facebook Page, send it to one of our newsletter editors!

Sylven Koltyk and Bob Berta

Sylven Koltyk recently called and we discussed tuning of an accordion. He had just attended the big November 1st

accordion concert at the University of Michigan and noted that this was very special because all the accordions in the

large orchestra were perfectly tuned and the sound was spectacular in its purity. Sylven is a very fine musician and had

some great comments on the tuning issues of an accordion and suggested we do an article about it.

There are many ways to tune instruments but currently the “standard” here in the US is to tune A to 440. When you

buy an accordion ideally it should be at that tuning but often different manufacturers will tune them higher….to 441 or

42 is not uncommon. Some tuners tell me that it is better to go slightly high than flat as the human ear picks up flat

easier than sharp. In any case even that tuning is not standard all over the world. In the past around JS Bachs time A

was tuned a full half step flatter. And while is A/440 is the current standard here...in some orchestras in Europe they

are going a bit higher. Evidently this has caused some consternation with owners of very valuable string instruments

complaining that is putting life shortening stress on their valuable instruments. But we accordionists don’t have to

worry about that. Our problem is that often our old accordions are in need of serious retuning!

While an orchestra musician will take great care to tune all of their instruments to a standard A/440….an accordion

can’t be tuned “on the fly”. You are stuck with what you have. In addition the accordion is probably the only instru-

ment other than the bagpipe which is often intentionally tuned “wet”. One middle reed is on key and one or two other

middle reeds are intentionally tuned one a bit sharp and the other flat. That is what has come to be known as musette

tuning. Originally the reason for that was to make the sound stand out from other instruments in a group. But that can

be very irritating to the ear of a trained musician. Luckily while we can’t retune on the fly, other instruments we play

with can...except for piano. To my ear that is why it is rare when a piano and accordion duet is successful. I think it

would be hilarious to hear the remarks if we were to tell a violinist we intentionally put our instruments OUT of tune.

I used to belong to an accordion ensemble while I lived in California conducted by the late Joe Smiel. Joe was an in-

credible professional musician with many years playing with and arranging for top orchestras in the world. He had an

ear that was remarkable. When playing in his group we were only allowed to use the bassoon or clarinet reeds...those

are single reeds and are supposed to be tuned flat. If one of us accidently switched on another reed he would cringe

and ask that person to PLEASE don’t do that again. He told me it was like screeching chalk on a blackboard.

Sylven related how he once accompanied a violinist. He thought he would spice up the piece a bit with a “wet” tuned

combination of reeds. Afterwards the violinist asked him what was he doing and said “PLEASE don’t do that again”

….do you see a pattern here ;-)

So perhaps part of the problem with the accordion perception is that we tend to play “screechy” instruments for the

public...especially in groups. I am not sure what the magic cure is...but perhaps we should make a point of having our

instruments tuned every few years and when playing with others use the single reeds. There is a place for musette on

folk music but many forms of music sound so much better with those single reeds. Jazz players tend to recognize this

as they like to use the bassoon reed.

The history of the musette style music used a form of bagpipes first and the musette name itself came from bagpipe as

the accordionists replaced the bagpipe. When I was in Scotland I learned that their form of bagpipe was designed to

scare the c**p out of the enemy. So unless we want to scare off our listeners we may want to avoid over use of musette

reed and especially in ensembles ;-)

This is one area that favors electronic accordions as they are tuned dead on, never need retuning, and if a group does

need a bit higher tuning for some reason, it is easy to change the tuning electronically on the fly. But the electronic

accordions also have their musette!

ACCORDION FRIENDLY OPEN MIC LOCATIONS

Many of our members enjoy attending not only MAS but OPEN MIC clubs in the area. There are a few outstanding Open MIC clubs that are particularly popular with our members. An OPEN MIC club has attendees sign up to play 2-3 tunes when they arrive. On any given night you will hear just about every possible type of instrument, different types of music such as folk, country, jazz, classi-cal, and some light pop music. The performers skill level ranges from the low end to professionals but everyone supports all the play-ers whatever their ability and it is common for attendees to get together for future duets, combos, etc. Ages range from young to “well seasoned” and all are family & Accordion friendly events. Please help us by supporting our partners below and attend their events: THE SHELBY MUSIC SOCIETY—Meets the second Saturday of each month from 7:00-10:00pm at the Shelby Senior Center Audi-torium on Van Dyke near 23 Mile Rd. Shelby Township, MI. Center is located at the rear of the city library. Admission is by dona-tion. Attendees often bring desserts to share at the break. THE STARKWEATHER ARTS CENTER IN ROMEO—Meets the fourth Friday of each month from 7:00-10:00 pm. Admission is $4 for non-members and $3 for members. Location is at 219 N. Main St. in Romeo, MI SLOVENE AMERICAN CLUB, Melvindale, MI Accordion Jam, Every Friday Night 7:00 pm, MAS Members welcomed!

Also check out www.openmicdetriot.org for more locations to investigate, if you find a friendly Accordion location, please let us know so we can post the event on our Accordion Friendly Open Mic Locations!
