A growing opportunityThere is a Food Action initiative in the

valley and several groups are getting onboard! To be a part of this movement rightnow is simple, plant a row to share withthe Food Bank and community kitchenprojects. Do you have extra fruit that youdont want to share with the bears?Backyard gleaning promotes local eatingand instead of food going to waste it can

be picked (and possibly picked up) andshared. If all the highways were to close, could we feed our valley? How far does

our food travel to get to our plates? Acommunity enjoys food security when allpeople, at all times, have access to nutri-tious, safe and personally acceptable andculturally appropriate foods, grown in asustainable manner and obtained throughnormal food distribution channels.

If you are interested, there is a SocialPlanning Council meeting June 8, 3pmat the Civic Centre where Rose Soneffwill present Food Security Boot Camp.

CFDC promo videoI just previewed the new CFDC video.

It is quite well done and certainly por-trays Merritt and the Nicola Valley as agreat place to live and do business. Ithighlighted many, many business and

recreational opportunities in the area. However, I was very disappointed withthe lack of profile given to the artisticcommunity in the area no mention ofconcerts, art gallery, Country Christmas, service clubs, interest groups, film socie-ty, drama, ballet, community band and soon. The arts contribute to the well beingof a community just as do recreation, industry, culture and environment. Theonly concession to anything involvingmusic intimated that Mountain Fest wasalive and kicking not necessarily aguaranteed situation and perhaps notone to feature in a promotional video thatseeks credibility. If Merritt is to attractgrowth perhaps arts and culture should

be recognized as having a contributionand be promoted as well.

For those wishing to view the video,go to the CFDC web page and go toEconomic Development then click onMission Statement.

In the spirit of promoting a well-rounded promotion of Merritt,

    Kurt Christopherson

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some darned good ideas!

Boy, Officer and SquirrelA policeman caught a nasty little boy with a penknife inone hand and a squirrel in the other. "Now listen here," the policeman said, "what-ever you do to that poor, defenseless creature, I shall personally do to you." "In thatcase," said the boy, "I'll kiss 'im and let 'im go."
