A Bench area property owner found asuspicious device attached to a fencegate on his property. The gate is seldomused, but the property backs onto Crownland which is frequented by numeroususer groups. Its not known how long thedevice had been in place, but police do

know that it had the potential to serious-ly injure anyone using the gate whomight not have noticed it. The devicewas dismantled by the RCMPExplosivesDevice Unit without incident, and policedogs trained in explosives searched thearea finding no other devices.

Merritts 100th Anniversary

is issuing a challenge to design a speciallogo to be used during this centennial year.

The new logo must contain the slo-gan: Still Flourishing Under the Sun 1911 ~2011. It could reflect what Merritt was inthe past 100 years, what it currently is orwhat it could be like in the next 100years, or a combination. It should be

suitable to be placed on all AnniversaryCommittee correspondence, commemo-rative pins, souvenir items, etc.

The winning logo will become theproperty of the Merritts 100thAnniversary Committee and the chosendesigner will be featured in commemo-rative booklet, media, and web page.

The winning design will be selectedon January 24th & receive $150. 2011 property assessments in the mailOwners of more than 3,450 properties in Merritt can expect to receive their 2011

assessment notice in the next few days. Assessments are the estimate of a proper-

tys market value as of July 1, 2010. This common valuation date ensures there is anequitable property assessment base for property taxation.

"Most homes in the City of Merritt are worth the same on this year's assessmentroll compared to the 2010 assessment roll," said Graham Held, Deputy Assessor."Most home owners in Merritt will see modest changes in the -10% to +15% range."

Changes in property assessments reflect movement in the local real estate mar-ket and can vary greatly from property to property. When estimating a property'smarket value, BC Assessment's professional appraisers analyze current sales in thearea, as well as considering other characteristics such as size, age, quality, condition,view and location.

Overall, the City of Merritt's assessment roll increased from $861.2 million lastyear to $880.9 million this year. This total of $19.7 million of growth reflects chang-ing market values for many properties but also includes subdivisions, rezoning andnew construction.

"Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect mar-ket value as of July 1, 2010 or see incorrect information on their notice should con-tact the BC Assessment office indicated on their notice as soon as possible in

January," said Held. January 31st is the deadline to file a formal appeal for an inde-pendent review by the Property Assessment Review Panel.
