Yarn bombed! The old maples on the lawn of the Courthouse Art Centre are sporting colourful knitted graffiti these days. And a  group o f loc al artist s would like to see this  phenomenon spread through the do wntown core! Get knitting! Merrtt to get poc- ng agreement adt BC's new Auditor General for Local Government (AGLG) announced the first performance audits involving a number of local governmen ts. Merritt will be among 6 municipalities (Port Al-  berni, Surrey, Williams Lake, Victoria and New Westmi nster) that will undergo a ‘Local government performance in managing policing agreements and po- lice budget oversight’. The auditors will be looking at the de- gree that local govts are exercising their authority and controlling their costs. If efficiencie s are identified, that info can be passed on to municipalities for future ref- erence. And with policing such a big part of municipal budgets, identifying poten- tial cost savings could be of great benefit to local governments. They’ll be looking at operations with respect to effective- ness, efficiency and economy. Is the mu- nicipality being effective in management of its policing agreement? This, along with the other 2 planned performance audit topics (operational procurement; and capital procurement rrojects & asset management), will be re- ported on by March 31, 2014, relating to cost containment.
