More PreparedOur graduate programs are designed to help students reach their ultimate goal—whether it’s improving their professional status, obtaining a promotion, or shifting into a more enriching, high-growth field. To that end, the O’Brien Center for Student Success provides students with a wide range of career planning resources and services to meet their needs. We also assist with career development by connecting students with our strong network of employers, mentors, and alumni.

• Co-ops and internships: Graduate students gain relevant work experience, apply their classroom skills in real-world settings, test drive different career options, and identify their own personal strengths and areas for career growth.

• Executive Leadership Development: Take part in mock interviews and speed networking activities, and attend a reception with prospective employers and Merrimack alumni.

• Individual career coaching: Our students work with a dedicated graduate career counselor, getting one-on-one assistance with everything from resume writing to strength assessment to internship placement to career path selection.

• Online resources: From the Advantage online job system that offers students access to jobs, co-ops, and internships to InterviewStream, an online interview preparation program, our students have access to several, powerful web-based career-prep services.

• On-campus recruiting: Organized by the O’Brien Center, graduate students interview, on campus, with prospective employers—companies that are seeking to hire Merrimack graduate students.

“Getting an education that could help me understand how different functions work together and provide relevant, real-world experience was incredibly important to me. Through both my undergraduate and graduate experiences at Merrimack, I’ve developed a broad range of skills and capabilities that are proving vital in my current role at Nike.”

If any man embodies the proverb, “Charity begins at home,” it is Bob McCusker ’68. From the year he graduated from Merrimack—the school that “always makes me feel at home”—through the present, Bob has consistently given back to the college that helped launch his successful career.

Bob McCusker ’68

Business Savvy from the Start

Bob majored in business, with a specialty in finance. From the start, Bob was active in school government, moving up the ranks from class treasurer to vice-president and president during his senior year. He was the president of the Business Club, on the yearbook staff, and a Phi Kappa Theta fraternity brother. “My friends used to tease me that I was always in meetings,” explains Bob of his busy extracurricular life on campus.

After graduation, Bob took a job at Gillette, the company he worked for in the summers preceding his junior and senior years. Right away, he took part in an 18-month financial management development program where he gained valuable exposure to different business functions from finance to manufacturing. Over the next thirty years, Bob held various financial positions at Gillette, worked in sales and marketing, and spent the last 17 years living overseas, working in general management. His roles took him to Australia, Thailand,

During his seven months of service in Afghanistan, Josh realized that “enduring freedom” required more than military presence and foreign aid. Specifically, he saw job creation as a crucial component of sustainable peace and prosperity in Afghanistan. Determined to jumpstart positive change from the bottom up, Josh searched for a way to employ Afghan women because women typically re-invest earned income in their communities through education and health care.

While walking through a bazaar in the Bagram Air Base, Josh and his comrades came upon beautiful scarves handcrafted by women from villages scattered throughout the Parwan Province. Many of the artisans had lost their husbands to the Taliban and were raising their children as single parents; some had been mutilated by improvised explosive devices and land mines. That’s when the idea for Flying Scarfs crystallized. “Afghan widows are among the most marginalized people in the world. I wanted to help empower these women with an income so they could provide for their families and gain the dignity that goes along with self-sufficiency. I can’t make scarves, but I can help Afghan women access a global marketplace,” explains Josh of the micro-business he launched with his Air Force friends. Just five months after the Boston Marathon bombing, Sydney Corcoran stepped on to the Merrimack College campus as a freshman student. “Attending school is a huge step for me. There have been moments where I’ve questioned whether I was ready for this transition to college. But I decided that I need to move forward.”

Sydney and her mother Celeste were badly injured in the bombings. Her mother lost both of her legs, and Sydney suffered deep arterial injuries and severely injured her legs and foot. For Sydney, the bombing attack was another blow after recovering from a serious car accident in 2010 that left her with a brain hemorrhage and fractured skull. Despite the fact that she’s facing another surgery and continuing to deal with ongoing nerve pain in her right leg, Sydney says she “feels good.”

When sked about the transition to a college environment, Sydney remarked, “College is so different from high school, but Merrimack offers tremendous resources and support. At first I was reluctant to meet new people, but I’m starting to make new friends and we’re talking about forming a study group. I’m excited to become part of a community.”

“When I StARt tO queStIOn thInGS, I tell MySelf: ‘yOu CAn DO thIS.’ I tAke A DeeP BReAth AnD SAy ‘yOu CAn Get yOuR lIfe BACk.’”

proFile

Sydney is majoring in psychology with hopes of going on to become an occupational therapist. “I want to be an occupational therapist because when I was in the hospital and rehab, although the nurses and therapists were there for me, they couldn’t truly understand what I’d gone through. As a result, they could only offer me so much. If I were to become an occupational therapist, I feel like I could help patients on a different level, both physically and mentally.”

When asked what good has come from this tragedy, Sydney was quick to respond. “The community—absolutely. Boston has always been part of my life and I love the people. But after this happened, people really pulled together. People from all around the world reached out to send their well wishes. Things like that can really help and turn it around for you. It’s great to know that you’re not alone. People are behind you.”

Sydney would like to inspire others by sharing her story with people who are facing difficult challenges. “To people who are struggling, I say, ‘appreciate that you’re alive. You can do whatever you need to do. You can do it.’”

A Guide to Giving Your Time and TalentsNearly every community has organizations that can use your help—whether it’s donating your time, clothes, food, toys, or money. Here, Mary McHugh from the Stevens Service Center provides a quick guide to volunteering your time and talents.

Before you volunteer:

• First decide what you feel the most comfortable doing and how much time you can devote to the cause.

• Remember: Organizations are grateful for any and all assistance, but their constituents are their main point of focus—not you.

if you want to serve, please:

1. Be clear about whether you want to do something specific (such as prepare or serve food) or if you are willing to assist wherever needed.

2. Contact the organization early. Most organizations staff for meals several weeks in advance.

3. Inquire about the time commitment. How early do you need to be at the site? How late are you expected to stay?

4. Ask about training. Some organizations like you to participate in an orientation prior to volunteering. you may be asked to complete an application and undergo a back-ground check. This helps protect their clients and gives you a chance to visit the site before you jump into an activity.

if you want to donate (food, clothes, toys), please:

1. Check the organization’s website. There, you can often find a list of needs. Typically, soup kitchens are looking for non-perishable goods. If you’re donating clothing, it should be new or close to new; toys and gifts must be age-specific.

2. Be sure to adhere to an organization’s requests. Remember, they are trying to fill specific needs for their clients.

3. Make note of the deadlines for dropping off donations.
