Amy BradleySeptember 16 & 17, 2011

Are you ready for a fun day of sewing? Then you won't want to miss the opportunity to have a class with Quilt Artist Amy Bradley. Amy has been quilting for over twenty years. She graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in fine arts/ graphic design. She started quilting in the 80s.

When referring to her quilting Amy says "My inspiration for my first quilt design, Dazzling Dogs, was to create a gift for John's veterinary clinic. I started my business with that quilt and it has only hung in the clinic for about one week in the past four years. When I told my husband about my plan to turn Dazzling Dogs into quilt patterns his now famous line was "Do people buy those?". Now his new famous line is "When can I retire?" I am always looking for my next comical character such as Quilt Diva, Super Quilter, Seasoned Quilter, and Bountiful Beauties. I know quilters have just as much fun making my patterns as I have designing them, I've seen the photos!"

Amy Bradley

We are currently having a trunk show on display with 10 of her patterns. Pick one of Amy's patterns and join us on either September 16 or 17. Lunch included. The cost is only $60. Space is limited, so sign up quickly.

Stash for Cash * Saturday, September 24

7:30 am - 11 am

Stash for Cash is happening again this fall at Merrily We Quilt Along. On Saturday, September 24, we will hold our 4th Stash for Cash. This event is when you can bring kits, fabrics, sewing machines, block of the month, magazines, books, or anything you want to sell that is sewing related. It is one gigantic sewing flea market.

This is how the program works. For $15 you can rent a 6 foot space on the sidewalk in front of our shop. You are responsible for your space, including your table and pricing your merchandise. The only stipulation is that everything you sell must in some way be sewing related. In other words, no old mattresses! You can rent a card table space ( 4 feet) for only $10 or a larger space (8 feet) for $20.

We have a limited number of our 6 foot tables for rent. We rent them for $20 for the day with a deposit of $20. The $20 deposit is returned to you if the table is not damaged. If you rent from us, we will set your table out front and pick it up at the end of the day.

This event has always been a huge success and we hope you will come...either as a seller or a buyer. The event starts at 7:30 am and ends at 11 am.

You may be a fabricholic if:1. You have decided to stop buying fabric for a week or so, but only lasted a couple of days.2. You buy fabric "just because it feels good".3. You hide fabric in the bottom of the grocery bag to get it into the house.4. Your fabric stash insulates the closet where it is kept.

And, finally, you may be a fabricholic if: 5. The fabric store you frequent knows you on a first name basis.

Longarm Classes1. Intermediate Freehand Quilting: This is an all day class to be taken after your basic beginner class. OUR WORLD A friend sent this to me several years ago. I wish to share it with you. It has probably changed a little, but hopefully you will understand the intent.

IF we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, this is what the earth would look like:

57 Asians21 Europeans14 from the Western Hemishpere, both north and south8 Africans

52 would be female48 would be male

70 would be non-white30 would be white

70 would be non-Christian30 would be Christian

6 people would possess 59 % of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States

80 would live in substandard housing70 would not be able to read50 would suffer from malnutrition1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth

1 (yes only 1) would have a college education1 would own a computer

When you consider Our World from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringlyapparent.

Happy Holidays from the staff at Merrily We Quilt Along! Welcome 2012!

5 Series is HereIntroducing the NEW BERNINA 5 Series: the machines for the established hobbyist. If you enjoy your sewing hobby, want a full size machine and don't embroider, the new 530 and 550 QE will be a great fit for you. These machines will take you from crafting, to home decorating to quilting with ease. And the best part, they are compatible with the BERNINA Stitch Regulator.

The 550 QE is labeled Quilter's Edition for a reason. It comes with both the Walking Foot and the BERNINA Stitch Regulator. It will not only piece your top with the outstanding stitch quality of a Bernina, but will finish the quilting like only a BERNINA machine can.

The BERNINA 580 E will be making it's debut later in the fall. The new BERNINA 580 E will wow you with its simple, yet classic design, combined with superior function to set new standards. The BERNINA 580 E combination sewing/embroidery machine is compatible with the BERNINA Stitch Regulator, BERNINA Embroidery Software V6 and the CutWork Accessory and Software.

ASK LILLIAN Question: Can you explain the difference be-tween Design Connection and Design Studio? I purchased a Design Connection several months ago and now I am hearing about Design Studio. Is my Design Connection out of date? Do I need to purchase Design Studio to have the latest designs?

Answer: You have raised some questions which need to be addressed, as many embroiderers are interested in staying current with changes in the embroidery industry.

First let me assure you, your Design Connection is not out of date. You can still select designs from our Embroidery Take-out System and have them burned to your blank CD’s. However, you need to make ALL of your selections and have ALL of your blank CD’s burned by December 31, 2011. After that date, the system will not be able to burn CD’s.

Because of changes occurring in the computer industry, CD’s are rapidly being replaced by USB Sticks. This is also happening in our Embroidery Take-out System. For the balance of this year, we will have two operational systems: Embroidery Take-out (designs burned to a CD) and Design Studio (designs loaded onto your USB stick.) After December 31, 2011, we will NOT have Embroider Take-out; but, will continue to provide designs through Design Studio.

Technically SpeakingElizabeth Hurrelbrink

This time in technically speaking, I would like to address machines that people own but do not use. The national average of machines that quilters own is 2.3 machines. Most of us have even more than that. We have our favorite that we use all the time. Then we have our backup machine that we take to classes or use when we are getting our main machine cleaned or worked on.

We have the collectable machines. Older machines that we love but don't use and we wouldn't even consider selling. These machines are sometimes forgotten about when it comes to yearly cleanings. One of the worst things that we can do to a machine is to let it sit for long periods of time without using it (just like a car!). If you have some machines that you previously loved and are keeping as mementos, take the time to get them serviced. That old machine is like a dear friend and will need a little loving sometimes so that it will be there for you when need it.

Don't forget about that serger that is stashed away in the closet. Sergers are very susceptible to "freezing up" when not properly maintained.

Remember that over time the oil dries up and no longer lubricates your machine properly. Before using a machine that has been dormant for a while, be sure to have it cleaned and oiled to ensure that all the internal moving parts are well lubricated and ready to go.
