Commodore’s Comments The holiday season is sure to be very merry and packed with a splendor of activities to enjoy this December at the Venice Yacht Club. The festivities kick off with our annual Lighting of the Fleet December 1st and are followed by the Venice Holiday Boat Parade December 2nd. We follow up the
holiday light spectacular with the Love & Cookies Project on December 6th, led by Linda Sussman and benefittingourlocalhospicecenters.TheCandlelightBall is one of the most elegant affairs at VYC and will be heldDecember 9th. Thefirst yearTammy and IweremembersatVYCweattendedourfirstCandlelightBall–Idon’tthinkwehavemissedonesince.Ilookforward to the special touches thisyear’sBallChairsBob & Christy Wiggs will add to get us into the spirit of celebration.OnDecember21st,TammyandIinviteyoutojoinusforatraditionalCommodore’sCheer.Also,the always popular and talented Bob Teesdale will be in attendance to provide seasonal musical entertainment. Closingoutthemonthis theNewYear’sEveGalaDecember 31st. Bobbie Hanna, Cora Wright and Tammy Carper team up for the last time this year to create a multi-faceted party celebrating 2017 and welcoming 2018. Additionally, between the plethora of scheduled activities and events this month at VYC, there will be plenty of opportunities for members to partake in the endless hospitality served up with spectacular holiday décor. Please feel free to share the beauty of this special place with your family and guests this holiday season. The holidays also offer an opportunity for VYC members to share their gratitude towards our superb group of staff members with something extra. TammyandIsincerelyhopeyouhaveenjoyedthisyear at the Venice Yacht Club. Our turn at the helm is nearing completion. Our goal in this journey was a simple one: to deliver the VYC into 2018 in as good condition as was presented to us by our predecessors. Looking back at this year, it pretty much seems like our journey was through fair winds and following seas. THANK YOU to so many of the mates that “had our backs” and gave of their time, talents and inspiration. Each month in my Commodore’s Comments I’veended with something timely and thought provoking, well, at least it was for me. Following is something most probably know, but worth another ponder. In1897,eightyearoldVirginiaO’Hanionwrotea
letter to the editor of the New York Sun asking a plain question:"IsthereaSantaClaus?""Yes,Virginia, thereis a Santa Claus," came the terse reply. The answer, though, was not a patent fib designed to placate ayoungster, but an exposition on belief itself. "Virginia, your little friends are wrong," the editor wrote. "They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe, except [what] they see… [Without Santa] there would be no childlike faith, no poetry and no romance to make tolerable this existence… Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is not a sign there is no Santa Claus…. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen in the world." We wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a joyous New Year! Kerry Carper, Commodore

Manager’s Column Well, another holiday season is here. Your Club is decked out in all the trimmings of the season and looks spectacular. It’sworthatriptotheClubjust to see it. Of course, there are lots of other reasons why you would want to stop by. Perhaps you are shopping and want to stop in for a relaxing lunch. Maybe you have family in town and
want to treat them to dinner. Whatever the reason, VYC is always the place to be. There are numerous events planned throughout the month to celebrate the joy of the season. We hope you can take time out of the hustle and bustle of the season to share some of your time with us to enjoy some of these events. Please read through your Currents for the details of everything that has been planned and then make your reservations early. By the time you receive this, most of the repairs to the ClubcausedbyHurricaneIrmawillhavebeencompleted. The exception is the awning that connects the Main Clubhouse to the Tiki. Portions of the framing had to be removed and taken back to the shop for repairs. In theinterim, we pitched the tent to provide some cover from the weather. Asa reminder, thisyear’s“Where in theworld is theVYC burgee” contest will conclude at the end of this month. Because of timing issues, the results will be posted in the February edition of the Currents. Ihave receivedphotosfromliterallyallovertheworld. So,ifyou’replanninganyholiday travels, make sure to pack a VYC burgee. Ted George and Bo Potter, two of our Dockmasters, have left VYC and moved on to new chapters in their lives. Miles has been around boats, marinas, commercialfishing, etc.,prettymuchallhislifeandisanall around nice guy. Please take some time to stop by, say hello, and help make him feel at home. Tara, director of the VYBA, asks members to please refrain from borrowing the little trailers and using them to haul things like batteries, etc. They are for use by the VYBA and just are not designed for these other uses. We appreciate your cooperation. Finally, on behalf of all the staff of Venice Yacht Club, Iwouldliketowishallofyouaverymerryholidayandasafe, happy and prosperous new year. Next time you are down on the docks, stopbytheDockmaster'sofficeandintroduce yourself to our new Dockmaster, Miles Wheeler. Miles comes from a family with a long history of marina operations in the northeast and has served as a commercial fisherman, delivery captainand harbormaster over the years. Welcome
aboard, Miles. Our October cruise was led by Steve and Barbara Johnson to picturesque Boca Grande. Seven crews arrived rather salted up having braved a strong northeast breeze on the way south. As the wind continued into early evening, the traditional Friday night docktails were thoroughly enjoyed, and needed, as plates were anchored down for a delicious potluck dinner. Everyone enjoyed exploring the island the next day which was capped off with dinner at Sisters Restaurant where seven additional land cruisers joining the group. Alas, the east winds continued, and sleep was evasive for the second night, as most were up adjusting lines and fenders well into the morning hours. Chef ’s Corner Being just married is a wonderful
phase of life. Every part of life has a new and exciting side to it, as now life is shared and experienced between two people. Christmas is especially an exciting time for newlyweds. If everthere is a time to embrace some good ol’ family traditions, it is definitelyduring the Christmas season. There are many traditions embraced by my familyandHeather’sfamilythatbring
a sense of comfort and community as we celebrate the holidays. Several of them are worthy of being shared and may indeed be common in your Christmas or Holiday celebrations. One of the most prominent holiday trends during the past few seasons has been the Elf on the Shelf. Our family was a little late coming on board, but has now incorporated it into our traditions. During the Christmas season, our little elf gets into all kinds of mischief and keeps an eye on things for Santa. It is tremendous funandIcan’tbelieveourlittleelfdidn’tcometoourshelfsooner! Another wonderful Christmas tradition in our family is all the baking and candy-making. It begins the dayafter Thanksgiving, if I can holdmyself off that long! This decadent family tradition includes a different kind of fudge, bourbonballs, truffles, cookies, pies, andanyother kind of treat you can bring to mind! Of all the Christmas traditions in our family, the tradition of opening a singular gift on Christmas Eve dates back many generations. The family member who is the firsttodeclare,“ChristmasEvegift!”getstoopenagiftprematurely. You’dthinkitwouldalwaysbeakid, butnotnecessarily…allISfairinlove, war, andChristmas! Our traditions speak volumes about the importance of family and may never be more evident than during the Christmas andHoliday season. Itwill be interesting tosee what new traditions are implemented as our children are born, grow up, and leave the nest to have families of their own. Some tried and true traditions will be passed along, I’m sure, alongwith a few of the latest holidaytrends sprinkled in. I’llbetweallhaveafewholidaytraditionsincommonand I would imagine every family has some specialtraditionsoftheirownthatareunique! That’sthebeautyof celebrating the holidays with family.
~Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Remember to embrace your family traditions whatever they may be!~

Celebrating 2017 and Anticipating 2018: Itisanhonortobeginplanningforthe2018yearasthenewChairofthe VYC Charitable Foundation. How excited we are to conclude our most successful year ever, under the leadership of Michael Nemser. He has served our foundation in many capacities and particularly served as Chair in 2013, 2016, and 2017. On Oct 14, our Club and VYCCF presented Michael with a special Community and Club Service Award, a well-deserved recognition. As we close out 2017, the Foundation received a total of $124,000 indonations, sponsorships, andauctionproceeds.InourSpringGrantCycle, we funded $45,700.00 to community charitable requests and in our Fall Grant Cycle we were able to grant an additional $65,800.00 for a grand total of $111,500.00. A full description of our grant historyisavailableontheVYCWebsite.Inaddition, wewereableto celebrate with Family Promise at the dedication of their "Family Scape" on October 28. Our Foundation was one of the key sponsors of this project, which will provide a new start for so many families in South County. By the time you read this, our first Fun/Loop Ride will have been held (Nov. 12). Under the leadership of Dave Slaman, bikers fromour Club and community were set to ride 12 miles around Venice to benefit the VYCCF, rewarding themselves with a well-earned Pancake Breakfast on the lawn and pool patio. The riders will have helped us raise our start-up funding for 2018. As you know, our Foundation makes grants to those charities that serveourlocalcommunityinthefollowingkeycategoriesof(1)YouthBoating,(2)HealthandEducation,(3)VeteransandActiveMilitary,(4)Environment,and(5)CivicImprovement.Eachyearwechoosea"signatureproject"todriveourgrants.In2017ourSignatureProjectwas "NEST; Nutrition, Education, and ShelTer…for the Children." At our Donor Appreciation Night on January 11, we will announce our 2018 Signature Project and goals. As we look forward to the new year, we celebrate the holidays of gratitude andgiving. I hopeyouwill consider theVYCCharitableFoundation as a place to make your final 2017 charitable giving. The programs that we fund enable us to provide hope and a bright future to the children and families who truly want a fresh beginning. Ithelps provide services to returning veterans whose sacrifice cannot be measured. Your gifts help us to “chart a course to a better community." We are so grateful for your support. None of our achievements in giving are possible without our members and the tireless efforts of our VYCCFcommittee.Ilookforwardtohelpingleadusinanothergreatyear for the VYCCF.
