C.S. LewisClive Staples (C.S.) Lewis was born on November 29, 1898,

to Albert and Florence Lewis in Belfast, Ireland.

When Lewis was only four years old, his dog Jacksie, died after being hit by a car. After this, Lewis decided he would change his name to Jack and was known by this name by family and close friends the rest of his life.

From the time Lewis was very young, he loved to read. He loved Beatrix Potter stories and animals and tried writing and illustrating his own stories while he was just a kid.

As a child, he was taught by private tutors until his mother died of cancer in 1908, when he was ten. After this his father sent him to a boarding school in England for a period of time. He then went to a college preparatory school, then on went after graduation to attend Oxford University in England.

While attending Oxford, he became part of the British army and went off to serve in WWI. While in the war he was injured and sent home after he was wounded by shrapnel. After being sent home and recovering he returned to Oxford University and graduated after studying literature. In 1925, he was given a teaching position at Magdalen College, which was part of Oxford. During this time, he joined a group of writers, among whom was J.R.R. Tolkien, who would later write The Hobbit, and The Lordof the Rings. While meeting with these other writers Lewis found himself drawing close to the Christian faith from his childhood and he became a Christian in 1929. He soon began to write books such as The Great Divorce and The Screwtape Letters which reflected his Christian faith.

When WWII began, Lewis began writing The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. He was inspired somewhat by three children he took into his home during the war as evacuees. He later said that that experience gave him a new outlook on the joy of childhood. This book would be one of seven books in a series called The Chronicles of Narnia. This series was published one book per year between 1950-

In 1956, Lewis married Joy Gresham, who was an American English teacher. Sadly, just a few short years after their marriage Joy died of cancer in 1960.

Lewis continued to write and work at Cambridge University until he fell ill in 1963. On November 22, 1963, he died from kidney disease at his home in Headington, Oxford. Even though he was a famous author, his death was somewhat overlooked by many because he died on the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
