M azda’s redesigned sedanand hatchback modelsnow emulate the mid-size

Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon,which means they no longer wearCheshire-cat grins affixed to theirsnouts. Instead, both have adoptedMazda’s latest Kodo (Japanese for“Soul of Motion”) design approachthat includes an attractivebut less gimmicky grille.

The rest of the sedan’s andhatchback’s bodywork isequally tasty from any vantagepoint. Like its Mazda6 andCX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3benefits greatly from theSkyActiv suite of structural andpowertrain enhancements.

There’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 155horsepower and 150 pound-feetof torque; the optional 2.5-liter

four-cylinder peaks with 184horsepower and 185 pound-feet

of torque. Both are available withsix-speed manual transmissions

(a mid-season addition for the 2.5however), but six-speed automaticsare optional. Interestingly, bothengines are closely matched in fuelconsumption with the nod going tothe 2.0’s official 30-mpg city/41-mpg

highway rating with the auto box.

The 2.5 rings up 28/39, but bothnumbers improve by one mpg with theoptional i-ELOOP capacitor that storeselectricity generated under braking.

The system provides power forthe Mazda3’s various electricalcomponents for extended periodswhile disengaging the alternator,which reduces drag on theengine. The driver is unawarethat i-ELOOP is operating.

Mazda3 prices start at $17,750 forthe base i SV sedan that includesthe usual air conditioning andpower-operated accessories pluspush-button start. The base s Touringhatchback is priced at $25,400, butalong with the lustier 2.5-liter engine,there’s considerably more content.

Mazda will also sell you a top-lineS Grand Touring edition with enoughstandard and available up-level andsafety gear to rival many so-calledluxury vehicles. When James Eaneswas a toddler, he wasoutside as his father

worked on a car. His dad washaving some difficulty gettinga front license plate off thevehicle, so he moved aroundback to see if the back platewould come off. By the timehis dad had handled the backplate, James (he goes byJamie) was waving the frontplate around in his hand.Apparently, he had solvedthe problem. And that’s whathe’s been doing ever since.

“I guess I had motor oil inmy blood,” Eanes said duringa recent phone interview.

Eanes works as atechnician at StrosniderChevrolet in Hopewell.This year, he has earnedthe designation as theoverall winner of all thearea technicians that tooka 100-question test overseenand scored by the National Institute for AutomotiveService Excellence. For each dealership, thehighest scorer is named Top Gun. Eanes hadthe highest score amongst all of the Top Guns.

“I am very good at taking tests,”Eanes said. And it sounds like thisis no simple test. The exam has100 questions, and Eanes saidthat if you score in the 80s, you’redoing well. Eanes reported he hasnever scored below a 92. Despitehis professional accomplishments,Eanes remains humble. Heknows that there is alwayssomething more to learn whenhe comes into work each day.

“I will never have it down,” hesaid. “It is a moving target.” Ashis time at Strosnider has passed,he’s seen cars evolve considerably.That’s not surprising: Touch-screens and sleek bodies aren’twhat your parents rememberabout the cars of their youth.

Eanes was born in Richmond,attended Thomas Dale HighSchool and sharpened his skills atJohn Tyler Community College.

But he’s been working oncars for most of his life. Hisfirst car, a 1962 Chevy II, cameto him as immobile; that is,it did not run. But Eanes got

it back in shape and back on the road.

Today, Eanes more or less does the samething for the customers of Strosnider Chevrolet.

He prides himself on being able to translate carnoises into solvable problems, working with avehicle’s electronics and wiring and generallyhelping people get their cars back on the road.

The solving of the puzzle is the most fun, Eanessaid, and he enjoys the process of figuring out whatis causing the problem in a vehicle. It makes sensethen that he has chosen the line of work he has,and his top Top Gun status shows just how skilledhe is at knowing the nuts and bolts of what he does.

As for what a technician needs to succeed,Eanes is certain. Attention to detail is critical, hesaid. In the past a car’s service manual might havelived on the shelf only to be pulled down when aparticularly complex problem arose. Now, Eanessaid, he finds that translating what he reads inthese manuals and diagrams is valuable for doinghis job correctly. The ability to translate what isread into solutions is essential, Eanes said. Thatsaid, institutional knowledge and experience arestill important especially when you have more thanthree decades of time spent working on cars.

“I’ve been doing this for 36 years,” Eanessaid. “It’s all in my head.” His performanceon the ASE test shows customers andcoworkers that Eanes can take what’s insidehis head and translate it into results.

That’s how he became the overall winnerin this year’s group of Top Guns. ●

The third-gen CTS joinsthe compact ATS andfull-size XTS as part

of an evolving Cadillaclineup. The mid-size CTSis being repositionedas a larger modelthat’s five incheslonger with just morethan an inch morebetween the frontand rear wheels.

Despite theseincreases, thebase weight isabout 250 poundsless than that ofthe 2013 edition.The finisheddesign is moreexotic-looking andground-huggingthan before but

maintains Cadillac’sknife-edge facial

features. It’s underthe hood where the

CTS displays a flairfor the dramatic.

The choices include a321-horsepower V6 and

turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s rated at 272

horses. The star of the show is atwin-turbocharged version of the V6that puts out 420 horsepower anda V8-like 430 pound-feet of torque.This unique-to-Cadillac powerplantanchors the CTS V-Sport, which is thesuccessor to the hotrod CTS-V sedan.

The “V” is available for at least onemore year in the coupe and wagonmodels that carry over unaltered fromthe 2013 model year. A six-speedautomatic transmission comeswith the turbo four-cylinder andthe base V6 with all-wheel-drive.

The rear-drive V6 and twin-turboV6 each run with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission withpaddle shifters. The base CTSsedan, at $46,000, comes wellequipped. Even still, the optionslist is a lengthy one and includes20-way adjustable front seats anda 12-inch high-resolution displaymonitor for operating the infotainment,phone and climate controls.

Now entering its fourth season –an eternity as mid-size sedansgo – the Sonata still finds itself

a popular choice for sedan shoppers.

Credit the car’s pinpoint-sharplooks and impressive powertrain

choice for this continuing surge ofinterest. The Sonata’s base engine

remains a 198-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder (200 horseswith the optional dual exhaust).

There’s also an optional274-horsepower 2.0-literturbocharged four-cylinder.For both power and fuelefficiency, the SonataHybrid received a significantupgrade for 2013. Althoughtotal system output shrunkto 199 horsepower from206, overall torque wasenriched to 235 pound-feet, which is up from 193.This rise was achievedby slightly reducing thegas engine’s output while

increasing electric-motoroutput to 47 horsepower from

40 and enlarging the size of the270-volt lithium-polymer battery

pack. As a result, the Hybridaccelerates more quickly and,

under light-load conditions, can travelup to 74 mph under electric powercompared to the previous 62 mphmax. Overall fuel economy remainsat 36 mpg city and 40 highway.

The Hybrid also employs a six-speed automatic transmission(same as the rest of the Sonatafleet) instead of using a fun-robbingcontinuously variable unit used byits competitors. As for gasoline-onlySonatas, the base GLS includes theusual power-operated controls plusair conditioning, tilt and telescopingsteering wheel, heated seats andkeyless push-button start.

The sportier SE gets its ownsuspension settings, 18-inchwheels (16s are standard) andsteering-wheel-mounted paddleshifters, eight-way power driver’sseat and fancier interior trim.

The top-end Limited comes withclimate control, power sunroof,heated front and rear leather seats,wood-grain interior trim and apremium audio system. A seven-inchtouch-screen navigation system isoptional on all models, and much ofthe Limited’s content can be addedto the SE and/or the base GLS trims.

The Hybrid arrives loaded right fromthe get-go, but checking the PremiumPackage box adds a panoramicsunroof, touch-screen navigation,leather seat covers, backup camera,17-inch wheels (16s are standard)and a premium sound system. ●Wheelbase CommuniCations,Copyright, 2014

Station wagons have beenaround for decades, butperhaps no other brand is

more identified with them thanVolvo. That’s what makes the

2015 V60 T5 Sportswagonsuch an important addition tothe Sweden-based fleet.

In many respects, the V60represents a return to Volvo’sroots. There hasn’t been afront-wheel-drive carryallin the brand’s NorthAmerican lineup since theV70 was retired after the2010 model year. That leftjust the all-wheel-driveXC70 as the company’swagon flag-bearer.

The V60 sportswagonis an offshoot of theS60 sedan and sharesmuch of its physical traits.However, in back, the

V60 presents one of themore attractively sculpted

hatches to grace any wagon.In most key measurements,

both sedan and wagon arein a virtual dead heat. In cargo

capacity, however, the V60 comesup a bit shorter than you would

think when compared to the old V70.

That’s the cost of style apparently.

The interior features a unique“waterfall” control panel that flowsdownward from the dashboard ontothe floor console. There’s storagespace behind the flat panel, whichis pretty standard for Volvo. The restof the cabin displays considerablepremium content with the optionalwell-bolstered seats being preciselywhat you would expect in a car thatuses the Sportswagon appellation.

There’s also plenty of sportingcontent to be found under the hood.The V60 is the first Volvo to reachNorth America with a brand newengine. The turbocharged 2.0-literfour-cylinder “Drive-E” (standard inbase front-wheel-drive T5 models)puts out 240 horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque and is rated at 37 mpghighway. All of Volvo’s powerplantswill eventually be based off the Drive-E, but for the time being buyers canselect the optional turbocharged2.5-liter five-cylinder in the T5 AWDthat makes 250 horsepower and266 pound-feet of torque. The Elantra entered the compactcategory a quarter-century agoand has evolved into a fine line of

sedan, coupe and hatchback models.

The latest coupe and hatchbackwere launched for the 2013

model year, and a mid-cyclerefresh of the sedan is inthe works for 2014.

The coupe and hatchbackclosely mimic the swoops-and-swirls theme of thecurrent sedan and mimicthe more aggressive noseof the Veloster Turbo.Blacked-out grilles andunique wheel designsare another area ofdifferentiation, but fromthe back, the Coupe issimilar to the sedan andidentical in both interiorand exterior dimensions.

The GT is slightly shorter,but its expanded cargo

area allows for 23 cubic-feetof room with the rear seats

up (compared with 15 for thesedan/Coupe) and more than

50 with them folded flat. TheElantra’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder

engine puts out 148 horsepower (145horsepower for states that requirepartial-zero-emissions tuning) andis rated at 28 mpg in the city and 38mpg on the highway with the standardsix-speed manual transmission oroptional six-speed automatic.

Both carryover models share asimilar dashboard and cabin design.Base Elantra sedans and Coupesinclude the usual power-operatedassortment, a six-speaker audiosystem, air conditioning, cruisecontrol and more. Stepping up toLimited/SE adds leather seats (heatedin front and back), power sunroof,cruise control, telescopic steeringwheel, fog lights, Bluetooth hands-fee communications and 17-inchwheels (16-inchers are standard).

The GT comes in only one flavor:nearly loaded. The big options includethe automatic transmission, a stylepackage with 17-inch wheels andstickier tires, sportier suspension,sunroof, leather seats and detailsand power driver’s seat. ●Wheelbase CommuniCations,Copyright, 2014
