Types of housing in Kwun Tong
70% residents in Kwun Tong live in public housing estates or Home ownership scheme estates
The rest live in private sectors
Most public housing estates are very old. Some even reach 50 years, for example,
Home ownership scheme estates were built at a later time, but are already 20-30 years.
Private sectors are as old as public housing estates, reaching 30-40 years.
Living Environment No elevator: elders have to walk upstairs, which are as
high as 10 floors. Risk of fall is high. Narrow, poorly lit corridors: difficult to see clearly, may
trip over easily. Worn-out wires and pipes: Leakage is dangerous.
Incident of power supply exposion led to electricity cut recently.
Problems of old buildings to elderly
Living Environment Old private sectors are not managed by companies.
Buildings are not very safe. Big fire broke out several times. Life threating to elders, as they are less likely to escape fast.
Small shops located on the ground floor of the buildings. Places are wet and narrow. Elders need to elbow through the area every time they go out.
Redevelopment Covers part of Kwun Tong only Many elders still live in worn-out buildings Incidents of falling objects from buildings under
renovation can be dangerous to elders
Problems of old buildings to elderly
Redevelopment Complicated procedures in selling old flats for
redevelopment are frustrating to elders Areas in redevelopment are quite at dark. Security
becomes poor. Dangerous for elders to go out and exercise in early morning.
Neighbours move out of old buildings. Loss of bonding.
Old buildings not under redeveloped Elders worry they have no place to live and the money
they can get back from the developers. Elders worry they cannot adapt to new environment if
they are to forced to move away.
