Whether you are a small business operator with a single vehicle or you manage an entire fleet, you need a truck that will do more, while costing less to operate. At Isuzu, that’s the only kind of truck we sell.

our engines are legendary for their power, economy and long life. our frames accommodate a wide range of body applications. our low-cab-forward design provides remarkable manoeuvrability. Isuzu trucks are engineered to maximize driver productivity.

INTRODUCING THE 2012 ISUzU N-SERIES TRUCKS.

Now, more than ever, these are the trucks that drive up your productivity while driving down your cost of ownership.

POWERFUL & EFFICIENT 4HK1-TC ENGINE.

The storied Isuzu 5.2-liter turbo diesel found in every 2012 NPr-HD, NQr and Nrr generates more horsepower and lower emissions while delivering better fuel economy than earlier generation engines.

THE CLEANEST ISUzU DIESEL ENGINES EVER.

All 2012 Isuzu N-Series trucks meet tough EPA 2010 and cArB oBD emissions standards, and are clean idle certified. Isuzu diesel trucks are the first in their class to offer Selective catalytic reduction to reduce Nox emissions by 85%.

MORE AGILE THAN EVER.

With an increased wheel-cut angle, every 2012 Isuzu diesel N-Series truck has a tighter turning circle than earlier generation models. They’re the most manoeuvrable N-Series trucks ever.

Under normal highway operating conditions,

the DPF will regenerate itself automatically to remove particulate matter from the exhaust. But under slow-speed, stop-and-go or long-idle conditions, the system may require—and will allow—the driver to manually initiate a DPF regeneration cycle manually. See your Isuzu dealer for details.

The convenient DEF tank—stores 28 liters of diesel exhaust fluid, and is even equipped with a heating element to ensure reliable operation in cold-climate conditions.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE.

Protecting the environment is part of the Isuzu Safety, Economy and Environment initiative. SEE enables us to bring you products that perform as well in the environment as they do in your fleet.

Question - Why is a 2005 Eagle listed at $80,000.00 from a local dealer when I recently watched one sell at auction for $40,000.00? Then I find another one listed in the classifieds for $60,000.00 from a broker?

Answer - They are not the same sweeper.

Even though you think you are comparing apples to apples when it comes to comparing used street sweepers with regards to miles, hours and vintage, there is a lot more to consider.

You could use a hammer to crack an almond, but it would be more effective to use a nut cracker— Chris Vanderhof

Whether you are an established sweeping contractor or a construction company looking to add a sweeper to your arsenal of equipment, you must first look at your application. With several different types of sweepers currently in production, it is essential that you determine which would work best for your sweeping needs.

Many people have made the mistake of purchasing a street sweeper without paying any consideration to what materials they will be picking up. The reason there are different configurations of street sweepers is for different applications.

You could use a hammer to crack an almond, but it would be more effective to use a nut cracker.

LOOKINGonce you have determined what type of sweeper will best suit your needs, now you are ready to go shopping.

It’s what you can’t see that makes all the difference — Chris Vanderhof

The all-mighty dollar is always a driving factor when you make any purchase, but the main focus should be on value. referring back to the opening question of “Why do prices vary so much for what appears to be comparable sweepers? It’s what you can’t see that makes all the difference. Street sweepers may be one of the most maintenance intensive pieces of equipment you own.

There are a lot of mechanical parts and wear items and if they are not properly

maintained, they could cost you a lot in downtime and repairs.

There are a lot of sweeper owners that neglect the maintenance side of their street sweepers. If the sweeper is running fine then they do not feel the need to invest in maintenance. This will definitely save the current owner a few dollars but could become your issue after purchasing one of the street sweepers.

Many sweeper buyers pay too much attention to the cosmetics of the sweeper.

There are some resellers that take advantage of this by advertising their sweepers as “refurbished” or “rebuilt” when all they have done is repainted the unit and added some new wear parts. As the saying goes “You can put lipstick on a pig... “

Does the unit look like a great sweeper? Absolutely.

Does it perform like a great sweeper? Possibly. Will it still be a great sweeper three or four years down the road? Maybe.

Let’s review our three price point examples for a 2005 Eagle.

THE PRICE POINT REVIEW

$40,000.00 from a local auction house may be a great deal or a great big lemon. You can find municipal surplus,

financial repossessions and contractor units at auction. With a wide variety of vendors you will also receive variable consistency with condition. Your low

purchase price point could be blown out of

the water after you get the unit

home and get a closer look.

Price is absolutely a factor to consider but sometimes a good deal is simply too good to be true — Chris Vanderhof

Some makes and models have an unstable history or may even be obsolete, making it difficult (and sometimes very expensive) to locate parts. Sometimes the low price point at an auction can be attractive but without doing your homework you could end up making a poor investment.

— Author, Chris Vanderhof, Q-Equips

FOR A USED STREET SWEEPER?TAKE A CLOSER LOOK

Page 7: MERG Spring Edition 2012

there are many dealers and brokers who are simply flipping equipment to make a quick buck. We

hear stories all the time of that sweeper that looked to be in perfect condition

and was a great price and they just couldn’t pass it up.

It is important to have confidence in where you are purchasing your street sweeper from. If your sales person can’t answer simple questions about the machine, there is a good chance the technician that completed the “rebuild” or “refurbishment” doesn’t know either.

Finally we get to our $80,000.00 price point. Now that we have seen the rest and done our homework this should be our best investment, right?

Hopefully.

There is a good chance that you have found the best value when you purchase a unit from a dealer that has experience with street sweepers. They should be able to provide you with some insight on the unit’s history as well as what mechanical work has been completed.

They may also offer training and manuals that will provide you with some extra value for your money. Most reputable dealers will also provide you with some form of assurance with regards to the sweeper’s performance after the purchase.

In these cases the initial purchase price may seem higher than other options going in, but lowering your life-cycle costs over the course of ownership is a solid investment. We would encourage you to do your homework in this case to ensure that you are dealing with a reputable company.

As with every part of your business there are risks and rewards. As a business manager you make risk / reward decisions on a daily basis. You can minimize those risks by doing your homework and making your next sweeper purchase from a reputable dealer.

Price is absolutely a factor to consider but sometimes a good deal is simply too good to be true. This brings us to our $60,000.00 price tag for our 2005 Eagle sweeper.

What happened to the last unit that you decided not to buy at the auction? You may be looking right at it with a fresh paint job and some new brooms and not even know it. There are a lot of dealers and brokers in the marketplace today who pick-up inventory at auctions.

Some of which do a great job at remarketing them at fair prices and adding value to be passed on to the end user. Unfortunately

Aluminum?WhyNot?

Combat the high cost of fuelwith a lighter weight materialbody. An aluminum body hasthe potential of weighing30% less than its steelcounterpart allowing for anoticeable savings in fuelcosts. Aluminum is rust proof. It also has increaseddurability and longevitywhich will ultimately save youmoney in the long run. Whencompared to a steel body, aluminum has a lowerdepreciation factor, sinceit does not rust and is sodurable. As a result, resalevalues tend to be higherfor aluminum bodies thanwith steel bodies.

Valley Blades Limited in Waterloo, ontario has been making snow plow blades for over 40 years. In those 40 years, they have led the way with technological innovations such as heat treated and carbide tipped blades.

recently a new product, PolarFlex, again changes the rules in the blade business. PolarFlex replaces the rigid cutting edge of a standard blade setup with independent 12 inch long carbide tipped steel segments.

These segments are mounted inside a system of synthetic rubber components which completely isolate the segments from the plow. The rubber mounted segments are free to move vertically and axially (float), allowing them to conform to the uneven contours of most roads.

Free floating segments have many advantages over standard blades. cutting

edges conform closely to the uneven surface of the road and therefore remove more snow. If more snow is removed fewer trips with the plow and less salt use can be expected.

Also, the 12 inch segments will wear more evenly as they will all be in contact with the road. If a few segments wear prematurely or are damaged by road obstructions, these segments can be replaced individually.

With no metal to metal contact between the truck and the road, vibration is significantly reduced, leading to other benefits. Unlike traditional blades, the unique design of PolarFlex reduces the blades’ tendency to chatter or bounce. Eliminating the chatter leads to much longer wear life as the chipping and cracking of the carbide edge is all but eliminated. A reduction in vibration also has a positive

effect on driver fatigue, plow damage and truck maintenance.

The design allows for the reuse of all flexible elements. Wear segments and flexible elements can be easily separated to allow recycling. contact Valley Blades Ltd. to find the dealer nearest you. — Contributed Article

GLOBAL CONSERVATION ranks highly in the minds of citizens around the world, but for most it’s a vague concept. In recent years, municipalities have set their sights on ‘going green’, in hopes of improving municipal living conditions for all citizens.

The residents of the city of Kitchener have made it quite clear that preserving and protecting the environment is of significant importance to their community – and in response, the city of Kitchener continues to implement policies and practices that address the environmental concerns of its community in a variety of innovative ways. Fleet at the city achieves this through improved environmental policies and practices, green stimulus funding programs, and grassroots initiatives.

At the vanguard is Don Miller. Don is a native of calgary but has been employed with the city of Kitchener since 1990. over the last twenty-two years, Miller has worked his way from Fleet Mechanic to the Director of Fleet within one of the largest operating facilities in canada. He has also observed environmental conservation efforts fluctuate in effect and in priority within the Kitchener operations Facility. It remains steady and high on the priority list now.

What tools does a Fleet Director within a city of a population approaching 250,000 use to help it be proactive on

the environmental front? According to Miller, in order to meet such objectives, communication is critical. Two-way communication with ratepayers, community groups, staff, and council is an essential ingredient in meeting strategic environmental goals.

Miller also references the Municipal Equipment and operations Association (MEoA) as a great platform for suppliers and industry peers that are looking for ways to network, become better informed, and vocalize their suggestions for improving equipment quality standards,

productivity and environmental sensitivity. He believes that through the sharing of ideas and having a dialogue around municipal fleet best practices, green initiatives will be more effectively applied and adapted.

Additionally, the city of Kitchener’s Environmental Management objectives are implemented through a number of set policies or practices that are then reinforced through management, and implemented by equipment operators. All stakeholders know the plan and rationale behind the plan.

From a Fleet perspective, the city of Kitchener has also adopted the ISo 14001 Environmental Management System, which has assisted the municipality with creating policies and practices to reduce its carbon footprint and reduce harmful gHg emissions. Some of the tactics that are implemented by the city of Kitchener include: increased use of equipment attachments, active gPS utilization, reducing idling, placing space heaters into units when they are being serviced, and utilizing the built-in water-recycling system to wash vehicles with rain water.

The city has taken further steps towards reducing gHg and improving local air quality through the installation of a 262,000 sq. ft. solar panel on the operations Facility, making it the largest solar-powered roof in canada. The 600-kilowatt installation creates enough energy to power 100 homes.

Not satisfied, the city of Kitchener has environmental strategic plans currently in the works that will incorporate hybrid equipment, lower set speed limits and plug-in electric technology for the near future. And there is more to come.

The city of Kitchener has made innovative environmental solutions a priority and Fleet is embracing this direction; the city is quietly becoming a humble role model for other municipalities, as it leads by example – thinking globally and acting locally.

“ENVIRONMENTal CONSERVaTION IS DOING ThE RIGhT ThING FOR ThE ENVIRONMENT…

FIRST MODEL IN NEW CAT® VOCATIONAL TRUCK LINE

Among the most significant new products ever launched by caterpillar is the cat® cT660, the first model in a full line of class 8 vocational trucks designed to work as transit mixers, refuse haulers, dump trucks and in any application requiring a heavy-duty truck with the reliability, durability and low cost of ownership characteristic of cat products. Adding even more value to the cT660 are the resources of the North American cat dealer network, which is prepared to sell and service the new vocational truck line.

“This is an exciting historic milestone for caterpillar,” said Steve gosselin, Vice President of caterpillar’s customer services support division. “The cT660 is a natural expansion of the cat product line and a perfect complement to other cat equipment on the jobsite. The cT660 is a direct result of caterpillar’s commitment to continuously develop new products that accelerate the business success of our customers—and its design results from hundreds of hours spent with vocational truck owners, fleet managers and drivers to determine their specific needs.”

SUPERIOR POWER-TRAIN AND CHASSIS• Engine options for the CT660 include the Cat CT11, CT13 and CT15—provide horsepower ratings from 330 to 550 and peak torque ratings from 1,450 to 1,850 lb-ft.

• The CT660 chassis, fabricated of durable, heat-treated alloy steel, provides the full strength of a class 8 heavy-duty foundation required for accommodating vocational bodies.

ExTERIOR FEATURES • Aluminum-alloy cab • Modular hood design • One-piece or optional two-piece windshields

INTERIOR COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE• The spacious cab is thoughtfully designed to help reduce driver fatigue, enhance safety and increase productivity. • The CT660 dash and center stack feature easy-to-read gauges and houses an interface for Product Link.

“our goal was to design and manufacture the ideal truck—the truck that customers have always wished they had for specific vocational applications,” says george Taylor, Director and general Manager of the caterpillar global on-Highway group. “our design team paid extremely close attention to all of the customer input we gathered, and we focused on turning that information into practical reality, drawing on caterpillar’s proven power train experience with on-highway trucks and decades of cab design experience for other cat equipment.”

The result is evident in the exceptionally capable cT660, reflecting a reliable, durable, fuel-efficient design that couples driver comfort and safety with optimum return on investment for the owner.

At North Toronto Auction, they’re seeing indications that the economy is starting to improve, and that automotive purchases will be on the rise. Already, dealer-only auctions have increased attendance.

With the spring market on our doorstep, I think activity is going to increase and remain active for the balance of the year — Stu Ralph

Although retail activity has been slow since last year, Stu ralph, owner/partner of North Toronto Auction, thinks the worst may be finally over. North Toronto Auction holds dealer-only wholesale auctions every other Friday from their location in Innisfil, just north of Toronto, as well as at public auctions.

They specialize in auctioning vehicles, equipment, and recreational assets from all levels of government, manufacturers, financial institutions and registered dealers.

Our new clients and the strength of our consignment have improved our attendance

— Stu Ralph

“With the spring market on our doorstep, I think activity is going to increase and remain active for the balance of the year,” says ralph. He notes that dealers can expect to see an exceptional selection of vehicles available at North Toronto Auction, since they are working with new accounts that are bringing in newer, lower-kilometre vehicles for the independent used car dealers, as well as the franchises.

ALWAyS CHANGING

Vehicle remarketing is a constantly evolving industry, and ralph says their organization is no exception. “We’re in perpetual motion, always changing,” he notes. North Toronto Auction was incorporated in 2003, and opened its doors to great success. In a few short years, they expanded their location to 24 acres with 15 additional acres to accommodate expansion.

With all of these positive factors on our side, we’re looking forward to 2012 — Stu Ralph

AN ONLINE PRESENCE

Now, North Toronto Auction has established online partnerships with open Lane, oVE and Smart Auction to enhance their own internet solution, Autogavel. As the first truly hybrid remarketing facility (incorporating Public Auctions, Dealer Auctions and Web Based remarketing), North Toronto Auction has vehicles for sale every day.

“We’re embracing the social media aspect of marketing, as well as being aggressive in developing new clients, our focus is to build consignment to ensure there are good, saleable cars, that are priced appropriately,” says ralph. “With all of these positive factors on our side, we’re looking forward to 2012.”

GROWING INTO A COMMUNITy

After a successful 45 years in Mississauga, ontario we realized that we needed to expand our facility to continue to meet our customer’s needs. As a result, in 2008 we purchased a 32,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located in Milton, ontario. We have grown into our new community over the past 5 years, while continuing to provide our high quality product and service that is recognized in the industry. It’s at this facility that we continue to move forward with our mission to provide our customers with the highest quality products and services at the best possible value.

ALUMINUM WILL GIVE OUR CUSTOMERS THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THEIR BUCK!

At Wilcox Bodies we pride ourselves on providing our customers with industry-leading, high quality products. Aluminum provides our customers with a cost saving, dependable, durable, rust-free product - giving increased durability and longevity. With today’s high demands for weight and fuel savings, aluminum service bodies give our customers up to 30% weight savings, as well as reduced fuel costs.

Wilcox Bodies’ newly designed crane and service bodies will result in a lighter body

with the same functionality as our steel bodies, saving in payload of the truck. This in turn means that our customers can reduce additional costs by going to a smaller chassis

– all without sacrificing the load capacity needed for the job requirements.
