Mercy Farm

Project Title – Mercy Farm House Renovation. Location: Mercy Farm, Krungthepkritha soi 32, Krungthepkritha Road, Bangkok Background: The Mercy farm is home to twenty of our older Mercy boys, who plant, tend, and harvest the fields before and after school every day. As our boys learn how to farm the land, they are simultaneously gaining skills, confidence, self-esteem, and a better understanding of the world around them. Previously, most of these children felt they had never accomplished anything. They had been abused, abandoned to the streets, and told they were useless. Life on the farm is turning their lives around. As they gained skills and confidence, we created a Learning Centre on the farm – a place where our boys can share their knowledge with peers and visiting student groups and where agricultural specialists can come visit to teach our children better methods, practices, and growing strategies. Goals/Accomplishments:

• To continue to expand the learning center the Mercy Farm has created for the community.

• To give our children the skills to plant, grow and cook their own vegetables. • To provide chores and activities which give the children responsibilities and as a

result, teach them the realities of learning and working simultaneously. • To give the children a sense of self-value and pride in their achievements outside of

school. • To promote wholesome activities in a healthy, safe living environment.

Project Requirements: Renovation of main farmhouse Throughout the year, we invite agricultural specialists and volunteers to work with our children on the farm. These visitors are housed in the main farmhouse. This farmhouse is the focus of this proposal. The farmhouse is uninhabitable during the annual 6-month monsoon season. Rains inundate the farmhouse interiors. We are asking for funds to fix our main farmhouse to allow us to increase our capacity to house more children, more visitors, agricultural specialists, and volunteers. Project Cost – 376,800 Baht Reasons for this project:

• To house Mercy children • To house guests, instructors, and agricultural specialists at the Mercy Farm • To accommodate volunteers to teach and support Mercy children on a long-term basis

Target groups:

• Children and youth living at Mercy Centre • Visitors and volunteers supporting Mercy Centre

I. Human Development Foundation Background & History:

The Human Development Foundation (HDF) is a registered non-profit, non-denominational charitable foundation located in Klong Toey, Bangkok’s largest slum community. HDF’s co-founder and president is Father Joe Maier, C.Ss.R., a Catholic Priest in the Redemptorist Order, who came to Klong Toey in 1972 as the Parish Priest in the Slaughterhouse neighborhood. Father Maier joined with Sister Maria Chantavarodom in 1973 to start the Human Development Foundation for their poor neighbors of all religions. The community served is primarily Buddhist with a small minority of Muslims and Christians. The HDF operates under the guiding principal of helping the poor help themselves, with a primary focus on children. Core programs include:

• Education of slum children: Twenty-three slum kindergartens in Bangkok; one kindergarten for sea gypsy children in Ranong Province; one special school for street children (Janusz Korczak School) and over 500 education sponsorships for the very poorest children of all ages.

• Child Protection: Homes and shelters for 180 children; a legal aid center and a citywide outreach program for street children.

• Combating AIDS: Children (over 50 children are currently living with HIV/AIDS in our five Mercy homes); home-based care in over 60 slum communities; and an education/outreach program throughout the city.

• Community Services: Credit Unions, Micro-loans, Housing, Emergencies, and Outreach.

Historically, all HDF programs grew out of a one-room slum shack in Fr. Maier’s Klong Toey parish. This shack was turned into a kindergarten in 1973 for the education of the slaughterhouse children. Following the success of its first school, HDF opened dozens of additional kindergartens throughout the city’s slums. In recent years, HDF has handed over many of its longest-serving schools to the communities that now are capable of supervising the education of their own children. These communities have been able to grow stronger in large measure because they value the education of their children. Currently over 2,500 slum children attend HDF Mercy preschools. In total, over 40,000 poor children have graduated from HDF preschools and continued their education in formal government primary schools. In addition HDF sponsors the education of 50 children currently attending colleges and universities in Bangkok and abroad. In 1991, HDF started a shelter program for a dozen street children at its Mercy Center. All HDF child protection programs have expanded from the care of these original Mercy street children. Operating the only Legal Aid Centre dedicated solely to street children, HDF defends and protects homeless children daily at police stations, in courts, and on the streets. Following the tsunami of 2004, HDF began serving the poorest ethnic Mokan (sea gypsy) communities in the mid-southern provinces of Thailand. From 2005 to 2011, HDF sponsored

the education of over 500 Mokan children in Phuket and Phang-nga Provinces. The foundation still works closely in the areas of health and education on one destitute island village in Ranong Province. For over 40 years, Mercy Centre has been a serene haven in the slums. Today it provides shelter for 180 children. It is home to the largest of HDF’s twenty-three Mercy Kindergartens, the Janusz Korczak School for Street Children, and the administrative center of all HDF outreach programs. Neighbors in need drop in any time of day. Mercy’s doors are always open. Recognition and Awards: HDF and its Director Fr. Maier, have earned many awards over the years: 2009: Father Maier named Child Protection Ambassador to Thailand 2009 in an award ceremony at the Thai Parliament House and presented by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajive. Father Joe is the first foreign resident ever to receive this honorary title. 2004: Lifetime achievement awarded by Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand in the field of protection of mothers and children. 2004: Outstanding Citizenship awarded by Red Cross AIDS Research Centre for social work and community development in the field of HIV/AIDS and presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsavali Phravorarajatinuddamatu 1999: Koman Kim Tong Foundation Award for Outstanding Citizenship 1998: Special Achievement Award presented to HDF from National Council of Thailand for Child Development 1997: HDF receives the United Nations ESCAP HRD Award as best NGO among 41 Asian nations, based on quality and sustainability of programs and positive impact on community 1997: First annual Diamond Award for outstanding citizenship from Bangkok Community Services Organization 1994: Justice and Peace Award, Redemptorist Order, Denver People and Groups that HDF Serves Headquartered in the Klong Toey slum (population 225,000) with a staff of 220 social workers, schoolteachers, and HIV/AIDS home-based care providers, HDF is active in over 60 communities throughout Bangkok. The foundation takes in and cares for poor children of every age, from babies and toddlers to young adults. While HDF never turns away a child in need, its goal is to keep families together. In many cases that means taking care of the grandmothers and grandfathers who are often the primary guardians in poor households.

Many factors in the slums may lead to the separation of children from their families. A single slum fire can often destroy hundreds of homes in just a few minutes. Land reclamation and evictions also put enormous stress on families. To keep these families together and to strengthen the poorest slum communities, HDF has built and/or renovated over 10,000 homes in the past 38 years. To keep families together, we serve poor people of every age. II. Mercy Children’s Homes

Mandate Protection, Caring, Education, a Future full of Opportunities

Number of Children Currently 180 children. Over 50 Mercy children were born with HIV.

The Care We Provide The HDF operates five Mercy homes for children. Every child who lives with us comes from somewhere: a home, a village, a place full of relatives, people they call Aunty and Uncle, Grandma and Grandpa. Our goal with all of our children is to help them return home whenever possible, in those cases where the home environment is loving and nurturing. We raise the children in the religious faith of their parents and teach them to respect all religions. Our children attend Catholic Mass and Buddhist ceremonies. We have programs that teach our children art, computers, dance, and physical education. Each Mercy Home also includes social workers, cooks, tutors, and coaches. We send them all to school and nurture and love these children as part of our family. We teach them all we can to prepare them for life once they leave our Mercy family.

Our Homes:

• Five permanent homes, divided by sex and age. • A home for children in transition, joining or leaving our Mercy Centre. • Previously - before anti-viral medications were accessible - we operated separate

homes for our boys and girls living with HIV/AIDS. Now that these children are able to receive daily anti-viral medications, they are able to lead more normal lives. In 2012, we integrated these children into our other Mercy homes.

Origins/History In 1976 HDF opened a home for nine street children who depended on Father Joe and Sister Maria for survival. Our capacity to care for such children grew with each child we took in and our reach expanded every year. The following year, the Ministry of Justice, in a unique arrangement, also began assigning children to our care as an alternative to incarceration.

The Challenges Our greatest challenge never changes. That is, to ensure that our children, who often come to us after experiencing enormous infancy and childhood deficits, are able to be children once again on their way to leading a fulfilling family life in adulthood.
