Leading the Way VISION - MISSION The Mercer Island Schools Foundation is committed to meeting the educational needs and success of every student. Our goal is to ensure that the Mercer Island School District delivers rigorous, enriching opportunities from kindergarten through high school graduation.

We raise and manage donor funds that supply leverage for the Mercer Island School District to maximize all budgets and power strategic program investments for every student to succeed.

The Mercer Island Schools Foundation is the avenue by which the entire community can contribute. When you invest you become part of

something special that shines a beacon of light for every community,

illuminating what can be accomplished. Together, we will ensure the success of our next generation.

From the PresidentsOn behalf of the Mercer Island Schools Foundation (MISF), we would like to thank the entire Mercer Island community for its continued support of a successful 2015-2016 school year, where together we raised $1,493,000 on behalf of our schools and all our students. The long-standing tradition of donors, volunteers, teachers, staff, administrators and organizations on Mercer Island coming together to invest to develop every Mercer Island student’s full potential has produced the best public educational experience in the state of Washington. All of us who donate to the Foundation invest in our community, in our schools, and in every Mercer Island student’s success.As we look at the 2016-2017 academic year, it’s time to think about the shared vision we have for our community and the educational experience for all Mercer Island children. What are the additional investments necessary to prepare our students for a cognitive, digital and global world? We believe there are exciting opportunities around this question, and the Foundation plays a vital role in providing the necessary leverage for the school district to make the right investments to strengthen and improve Mercer Island’s community for all its citizens. We have two major fundraising campaigns this school year to reach our goals of supporting every student and teacher. The Fall Phone-a-Thon campaign has an immediate purpose to raise $484,300 for strategic K-12 programs in core academics and enrichment for this academic year. Our spring campaign, BRIDGE 2017, is an opportunity for the entire island community to continue to build on our shared success, and bridge to an even brighter

“We had our concert at Jazz Alley Monday night with our guest artist, saxophonist Dick Oatts. I cannot express adequately my gratitude for the experience provided to these students by the Mercer Island Schools Foundation. The two days we spent with Mr. Oatts were inspiring and trans-formative. I just spent about an hour with the kids in the jazz ensemble debriefing. They were blown away. I am confident it was an experience that will impact them for a lifetime. Mr. Oatts was brilliant, humble, gracious and kind. He stayed almost an hour after our scheduled three-hour rehearsal to work with kids individually. The performance at Jazz Alley was electric! Again, please accept our gratitude!”

Literacy is tied to everything we do in life. The power of literacy lies not just in the ability to read and write, but more so in an individual’s capacity to apply these skills to effectively connect, interpret and discern the intricacies of the world in which we live.

In 2014 and 2015 the MISD launched the MONDO Bookshop Common Core at every elementary school for every student in grades K-5, providing appropriately rigorous literacy instruction. This literacy curriculum allows children to build the confidence and skills they need to become strong readers and future leaders.

“My fourth graders started the year with the theme “Traditions” in our MONDO reading curriculum. This theme was a great ice breaker and helped the students get to know one another. Immediately they felt more comfortable sharing with their peers and respectfully asking questions about other students’ backgrounds. MONDO curriculum helped us build a positive classroom culture while directly teaching aligned reading standards.”

“Spanish students at MIHS received an authentic dose of South American culture when Quechuan musician, Luis Gramal provided hands-on lessons in cultural diversity with courses about the Quechua, the indigenous people of the Andes mountains. Students made traditional instruments and used a loom to make textiles. Students interacted with Gramal in Spanish, gaining confidence in language skills and their own ability to communicate, travel and get to know different peoples and customs they didn’t even know existed. This amazing opportunity to work with students spread the richness and vibrancy of the Andean culture.”

2o16-2o17 Fall Funding Request: $484,3ooThe Mercer Island Schools Foundation transforms the passion of parents, businesses and community members into investments designed to prepare every student to succeed and make Mercer Island Schools among the BEST in the state.

The following funding requests for 2016-2017 provide leverage to ensure that strategically identified programs for grades K-12 in core academics and enrichment are available to every Mercer Island student. The funds requested this fall will be available to students and teachers for use in the classroom this school year.

SEVENTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES ADOPTION“Most students think of geography as dull and boring. But once they start learning about landforms, regions and geographical processes, they begin to make their own connections. They travel excitedly around the state to see things firsthand and share their knowledge with their families. Often we hear they planned their family vacation to explore the Palouse or Dry Falls, or to climb and hike one of the five Sleeping Giants (dormant volcanos).

The new curriculum, Washington: A State of Contrasts, is enhanced with maps, timelines, photos and connec-tions to American history. The challenging reading level engages capable students. Graphs and visuals help students who struggle with comprehension. High school senior Culminating Projects often refer to people, places and historical events encountered for the first time in WA State History classes. The lessons remain relevant long after the tests and final papers are turned in.”

MIHS CIVICS ADOPTION“Civics teaches MIHS students about how local, state and

national government were designed to work; how and when our country fails to live up to those ideals; and explores

their own personal values about individual freedom, social equality, and who should hold power in America.

Through the Civic Action Project, they became experts in social, economic or political issues and decided

how they wanted to create a better society. They attended community meetings, met with their

elected representatives, campaigned for their cause, collected signatures, registered people

to vote, and created public service announcements. Students said they

found this work personally satisfying, relevant and empowering, and many

discovered new areas of passion.”

Letters from Donors“This summer Ewan was diagnosed with an aggressive form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Despite an

ambitious goal to be able to join his class for the first day of school, he did it! Today I had the pleasure of meeting Ewan’s second grade classmates and his teacher, Mrs. Tivan. His class listened to Ewan’s story about life for a kid battling cancer and dutifully sanitized their hands. We don’t often see all the ways in which the Mercer Island School District is working full-throttle to fulfill its mission of:

‘Developing a compassionate, innovative, collaborative community of learners prepared

to access and contribute to the ever-changing global and digital world.’

I am guilty of not realizing and appreciating the many ways our schools work tirelessly to

tailor an education to the needs of every single student. I have now witnessed how

teachers and staff see every single child as a unique individual. They truly teach

on a personalized level, striving for nothing less than excellence. It is
