Welcome to the new Badger Star! A new look with improved

content. Kyle Mahan and Bailey Hansen have been hard at work over the last several weeks work-ing to freshen up the Badger Star, and what you’re reading is the re-sult. Check out the entire edition; we hope you like what you see.

With the changes to the Badger Star comes a change in our news-letter liaison as well. Kyle Mah-an has assumed the newsletter liaison role from John Ledbury. I want to publicly thank John for all his efforts over the past 2 ½ years for his role in mak-ing this publication a success.

Live events are back on the calendar! Our first event will be June 20th Check out the events calendar elsewhere in this newsletter! Other events are being added as we work to re-schedule the re-mainder of the year, so look for frequent emails and check the Section’s website often for the

most up-to-date event calendar. Have a suggestion or idea for an event? Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any board member.

Virtual meetings

During this last two months of confinement your Section want-ed to stay in touch with our members. We held our first vir-tual meeting on April 21st, us-ing our GoToMeeting software. The meeting was successful, with Wisconsin Section members joined by the Presidents of the Kansas City and Minnesota Sec-tions. At the time of the event the Wisconsin Section was only one of two Sections in the entire nation to hold a virtual meeting.

The meeting turned out so well we decided on another virtu-al meeting, which was held the evening of May 21st. MBCA National invited us to open it to all MBCA, and we had a total of 114 members from 18 differ-ent MBCA Sections from around the country in attendance! We

Best Regards,

Bruce Hamilton

received many, many very fa-vorable comments on the event, including comments from Gary Anderson, the retiring editor of The Star magazine. Read more about this webcast elsewhere in this newsletter. Many thanks to Kyle Mahan for putting the pro-gram together for this event.

I close these remarks by thanking each and every one of you for be-ing a member of the Wisconsin Section. It’s our members who make this Section successful. I look forward to seeing all of you in person later this summer.

T he Wisconsin Section is seeking a member to fill the unexpired term of a board member who has resigned. The term expires at the end of 2021, at which time the individual will be eligible to run on the 2021 ballot for a full three year term. The interim director will have the same duties and

voting rights as the rest of the board. Board members meet once a month for two hours to plan and direct Section activities and establish pol-icies and procedures for Section events. Among other things, the Board is responsible for developing and maintaining a running twelve-month calendar of events and capturing requests from members for activities & events. Board members DO NOT have to travel to attend board meetings; most meetings are now conducted using the Section’s GoToMeeting web conferencing software. Members who sit on the Board of Directors should be willing and able to:• Attend a majority of monthly board meetings held throughout the year.• Participate in periodic e-mail exchanges to achieve Board & Section objectives.• Attend Section functions throughout the year.• Be willing to host or co-host an event. An event can be as simple as hosting a Drive-2-Dine or as

elaborate as planning and hosting a rallye.• Be a proactive and positive representative of MBCA and the Wisconsin Section Serving on the board of directors is a great way to meet other members and increase your involvement in the Section. If you are interested in serving please contact Bruce Hamilton or Bernd Kampe (contact information on Page 3).

Christine wanted a MB cabriolet for many years now, but Bernd did

not want to part with his shiny black E300 turbo-diesel. How-ever the time did come to retire and sell the E300 so the search began for a CLK Cabriolet.

They were looking for about a 12-15 year old CLK cabriolet with a low mileage 6-cylinder engine. Most were located in the Chicago suburban area where they didn’t really want to go. Finally, on the same Sunday afternoon after the completion of the Aug 2018 Con-course d’Elegance they went to get a Culver’s meal in Burlington.

On their drive back home, they noticed this silver MB CLK cabri-olet sitting near the entrance to the Miller Ford dealership, pulled over to look at it and liked what they saw, a 2004 CLK 55 AMG with 88,000 miles. They were not looking for such a powerful 55 AMG CLK, but the CLK are Chris’ initials,

so this car was meant to be hers. You’re never too old to purchase and enjoy a high performance MB AMG. They started out with old slow diesels and are now enjoying their dream, a high performance AMG 4-seat cabriolet with a 0-60 mph in 4.7 sec.

T he club would like to give a special recognition in this newsletter to Allen

and Rosemary Toussaint who this year will be celebrating 45 years in the Mercedes Benz of America Club. Allen bought his first Mercedes back in 1971 when they moved to 48th Street in Mil-waukee when their current Ford wouldn’t fit in the garage. Allen has great stories, from him saving his 250 from an en-counter with the swamp, to pull-ing around their 1964 sail boat with his 1964 Mercedes coupe. His favorite Benz was his 1986 300E and you could tell in his

voice he had real fond memo-ries of that car. They current-ly drive a 2010 C300-4MATIC. Article by Kyle Mahan

T he club would like to in-troduce one of our new members that attended

our April 30th virtual meeting: Ozkan Ozturk. His love for the brand started long ago when fa-ther started teaching him how to drive in his yellow W114/230.6. In 1987, he met the w126 chassis 300SEL for the first time. “At that time the car looked like a space-ship to me. Electric sunroof, cruise control, front & rear seats all electric/heated, antenna goes up/down. These features may not be new to the automotive history but they were totally new to me. I was 15 at that time,” Ozkan stated. His company took him to the US, after living in a couple of countries in Europe, then he moved to California and final-ly here to Wisconsin. Once he

arrived here he began looking for a for a W126 with low mile-age, no accidents and prefer-ably from the original owner.

He found his current w126 560SEL with 38k miles from the original owner. The car was im-ported to New Mexico in 1989 and stayed with the same family. He knows the entire story of the car and is one of the guys who prefer a Mercedes with numbers first. Please join us in welcoming Oz-kan to the Wisconsin Section and we look forward to seeing you at future club events.

From all of us at the club we would like to thank you for your 45 years of patronage.

V I R T UA L S I LV E R A R R OW TOUR R E V I EW

Wisconsin Section held its second virtual event, a tour of the Silver Arrow

display on May 21st. The event was originally planned for the Wiscon-sin Club but 48 hours before show time the national club approached us about offering it to other clubs. We figured the more, the merrier!

So at 2:43 pm on the 20th nation-al sent out the invite and Bruce’s inbox filled up quickly with ques-tions about the event. Over 14 different sections reached out for information. After few technical

learning opportunities the tour went off without a hitch. We had 114 members from 18 different MBCA Sections attend the tour. The tour started outside the Mer-cedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, but instead of heading straight to the Silver Arrow display there was a slight detour to the top floor. The E8 floor is dedicated to the beginning of Daimler and Benz, a must see for any visitor. Next the tour headed to the Silver Arrow display area on the E2 floor.

We started with the first Silver Ar-row, the W25 from 1934 and over the course of the hour reviewed and discussed all the Arrows on display up to the 1955 W196S. Links to the virtual museum is above the Silver Arrow image be-low. The club received many com-pliments for the tour. The comment “Fantastic and unprecedented ac-complishment” from Gary Ander-son of the Star was a great honor for the club.

T his time in a normal year our Mercedes-AMG For-mula One team would have

a few races down, a little more tun-ing completed and be in the middle of a points race with our friends in red. Instead, F1 is delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but Mer-cedes-AMG F1’s power-train divi-sion has been keeping itself busy. Since March 18, they began look-ing at ways to improve upon a con-tinuous positive airway pressure

machine, better known as a CPAP. It appears this new design operates in a more closed circuit with an extra device attached to the mask, and dedicated tubing for nostril inhalation. The F1 team cited re-search from China and Italy that showed 50% of those infected with COVID-19 who used a CPAP did not need a ventilator. If patients can recover well on this relatively simple CPAP and leave ventilators for the more seriously ill, it could help save lives.

The designs of a new breathing aid developed by engineers at the Mercedes F1 team, University Col-lege London (UCL), and clinicians at UCL Hospital have been made freely available to support the global response to Covid-19. It’s the latest development in Formu-la 1’s Project Pitlane effort to help fight coronavirus.
