Iraq’s Taji Power Plant - which serves the greater Baghdad area - celebrates its first year ofsuccessful operation producing electricity to help Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity (MOE) meet thecountry’s urgent energy needs. The Iraq MOE commissioned the facility in 2012, located 20

kilometres northeast of Baghdad.GE supplied four Frame 6B Gas Turbines for the Taji plant, which is curently generating enough

electricity to support about 160,000 households. GE has also supplied similar equipment for twoother power plants in Hilla and Karbala.

Altogether, GE supplied the Iraqi MOE with an additional 56 gas turbines for projects acrossIraq. These have added more than 7,000 megawatts of electricity to support the expansion ofthe country’s energy infrastructure and help fuel future economic growth.

“The successful startup of Taji last year signalled the first step in fulfilling our continuouscommitment to bring much needed, reliable electricity to the people of Iraq,” His ExcellencyKarim Aftan Aljumaily, Minister of Electricity, Iraq, told MEP. “This completed project marked animportant milestone in our ongoing relationship with GE. Teaming with GE, one of the world’sleading suppliers of power generation technology and services, is a cornerstone of our strategyto enhance and expand our energy infrastructure.”

“The Taji power plant project reflects the Iraqi government’s commitment to provide reliableelectricity to its people,” comments Joseph Anis, president and CEO, GE Energy in the MiddleEast. ”Working closely with the Ministry of Electricity, we have been successful in executing onour promise to deliver GE’s advanced technology to ensure that additional power is made

available to the Greater Baghdad area. Thissuccessful one-year anniversary is a significantmoment for GE in Iraq and reinforces ourgrowing commitment to the country, where wehave been active for nearly 40 years.”

More than 1,100 GE Frame 6B Gas Turbinesare operating worldwide, and more than 170units have been sold since 2006 - 75% of theseserve oil and gas and industrial applications.

More than 130 GE power turbines have beeninstalled in Iraq to date.

In addition to supplying equipment andservices for a wide range of new power plantprojects, GE continues to invest in Iraq andincrease its in-country presence. As part of itsplans for expansion in Iraq, GE has also openedthree offices in the cities of Baghdad, Basraand Erbil.

In 2012, both units went into operationin simple-cycle mode to help meetOman’s growing demand for electric

power. Following steam turbine upgrades, both

plants have commenced commercialoperation in combined-cycle configurationin April 2013 – in time to meet the peakelectricity demand during the hot Summermonths. With their total electrical generating

capacity of 1.5 GW, these two plantsincrease the Sultanate's current existingcapacity of circa 4.5 GW to approximately6 GW. A consortium led by the French utilityGDF SUEZ has bought the facilities. AlBatinah Power Company is the owner ofSohar 2 Power Station, while Al SuwadiPower Company owns Barka 3. The twoplants will be operated by Suez-TractebelOperation and Maintenance Oman LLC(STOMO).

Sohar 2 was built in the Sohar industrialpark approximately 200 kilometres north-west of the nation's capital, Muscat, whileBarka 3 was erected in the immediatevicinity of Muscat. For each of these plants, Siemens

supplied the main components comprisingtwo SGT5-4000F gas turbines, one SST5-5000 steam turbine, three SGen5-2000H

DISTRICT COOLING

This is certainly a chiller with adifference. The UAE’s firstabsorption chiller has the capacity

to change everything. For a start it canreduce the Dubai-based corporation’senergy consumption by over half a millionkWh every year.

Located on the rooftop of Dubal'sdesalination plant control building, thenew chiller replaces previous electrically-driven vapour compression air-condition-ing chillers used for comfort cooling ofthe building. The new chiller has the capacity toreduce the corporation's energy consump-tion by approximately 626,800kWh peryear.Tayeb Al Awadhi, Vice President of Power& Desalination, tells MEP that theabsorption chiller uses high vacuumconditions to lower the boiling point ofwater to 3.7˚C (versus 100˚C at normalatmospheric pressure) while leveragingthe chemical affinity of Lithium Bromide(LiBR) to absorb water. He says: "At this low temperature, highly

concentrate Lithium Bromide (LiBr)absorbs the water vapour given off in the

Dubai: saving energy withabsorption chillers

boiling process very effectively. “As the LiBr becomes dilute, its

capacity to absorb water vapourreduces. A heat source isrequired to re-concentrate theLiBr - whether steam, flue gasesor even hot water. In DUBAL,steam generated from wasteenergy was utilised. Heatingcauses the solution to releasethe absorbed water vapour, which is then cooled in aseparate chamber to become aliquid refrigerant (in the form ofchilled water) throughcondensation.” He explains: “The process uses

just 40% of the electricityconsumed by the conventionalelectrically-driven chillers anduses a nominal 0.6 tonnes ofsteam per hour to producesufficient cooling for the samepurpose."

Al Awadhi asserts that DUBAL'snew absorption chiller has thecapacity to reduce the DUBAL’senergy consumption byapproximately 626,800 kWh per year. Based on the standard conversion factor,

this equates to a reduction in CO2generation by about 350 tonnes per year, also equivalent to an estimated 180 carsoff the road per year.

"Installing this first absorption chillerwas a pilot project, targeted atdemonstrating the concept's ability tosave energy and protect the wholeenvironment," continues Al Awadhi."The concept can also be used for other

applications where energy-efficientcooling is required - such as equipmentcooling."DUBAL's absorption chiller was officially

inaugurated by Abdulla Kalban (Presidentand CEO) during a special ceremony on27th March 2013. Commenting on the project, Kalban says:

"This absorption chiller is expected toreduce the auxiliary power consumptionof the DUBAL plant, thus offering broadereconomic and environmental benefits tothe business. It will also add real value byusing readily available steam from ourPower and Desalination Plants withoutcompromising the processes of either."

GEN-SETS

Modern companies such asFlughafen München GmbH rely onstate-of-the-art products and

technologies which conform to the lateststandards in terms of climate andenvironmental protection. From the beginning, the company has

placed great emphasis on sustainabilityand economic efficiency when it comes toelectric power. This is also reflected in the airport's own

combined heat and power (CHP) plant, which makes a significant contribution tothe avoidance of CO2 emissions and isconsidered worldwide to be one of themost economical and efficient plants inits class. The CHP plant, which came online when

the airport commenced operations, wasequipped with seven MWM diesel enginesof the TDBG441BV16 series with an outputof 1,580 kWel and around 1,800 kWth. The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions– compared to conventional electricpower – is put at 30,000 tons per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of

20,000 passenger cars driving a totaldistance of 10,000 per year. This enables the total CO2 emissions of

the daily commuter traffic of 30,000people who work at Munich Airport to beoffset. This high efficiency is madepossible by the cogeneration of heat andelectricity: The heat generated by the electricity

production is not lost, instead it is usedfor heating and cooling.

In the course of the airport expansion ofan additional terminal in the year 2002,the energy control center was enlarged bytwo CHP plants. For this project, MWM delivered two

gensets with TCG632V16F engines whichwent into operation in mid-2002.

More than a million hours operatingat Munich Airport

The units have an output of 3.7 MWeleach and approx. 4.6 MW thermal. Thismeans in total that the airport hasapprox. 18.5 MW electrical and approx.20.5 MW thermal output available. The seven diesel engines are additionally

integrated into the airport's emergencypower supply system. Around 52% of theelectricity required by the airport and 72%of the heat is generated by the combinedheat and power plants on site. The airport's own combined heat and

power plant with the seven MWM dieselgensets, delivers an output of 1,580 kWeland approx.1,800 kWth. The MWM Service Center Munich has

managed the system at the airport sinceit was commissioned in the year 1992.Given the close regional proximity to theMWM Service Center and a customer-specific service program, systems havebeen running there fault-free for years, providing the terminals with electricaland thermal energy.

Working hand-in-hand with thecustomer, the MWM Service Center in

Munich has been able to continuouslystreamline service routines, among otherthings, reducing lead times for majoroverhauls by approx. 60%.

In 2000, FMG acquired a replacementengine through the Service Center Munich,in order to reduce down times duringlarge turnarounds from approximatelyeight weeks down to three, thereby alsoimproving the efficiency of the entireplant. The disassembled engine was thenoverhauled on site and made available tobe swapped out with the next engine.

Since commissioning of the cogenerationplant, MWM has been a consistent andreliable partner who, thanks to itscompetent employees, will always ensurethat passengers will never be grounded.

For Munich Airport, these measuresmean significantly higher availability ofthe gensets. This is yet another reason forthe impressive number of 1,108,000operating hours of all nine gensets.

Nine MWM gen-sets have been in operation for more than one million hours in Bavaria's majorair traffic hub - Munich Airport. And since its opening in 1992, the airport has worked in a

spirit of partnership with the MWM Service Centre in Munich, reports MEP.

STEAM TURBINES

The Yanbu 3 power and desalinationplant investment is part of SaudiArabia’s objective to expand its

power generation base while minimisingimpact on the environment. The contractis worth around €750 million.Alstom’s part in the contract includes thebasic engineering of the power block, advisory services during detailedengineering and procurement, supervisionservices during construction andcommissioning and delivery of mainequipment for 5 x 620 MW units. The list of equipment including the steam

turbines and generators, the two HFO-fired supercritical boilers, electrostaticprecipitators and the advanced flue gasdesulphurisation system. The plant is expected to be fully

operational in 2016, accrdoing to currentprojections.

Alstom will supply the equipment to theAl-Toukhi Company for Industry, Trading &Contracting, which is leading theconsortium in charge of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) ofthe plant for the Saline Water ConversionCorporation (SWCC), one of the leadingpower and water utilities in the region.

The project is of great significance forSWCC and for Saudi Arabia in general. Theplant will produce 3100 MW power to

Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu 3to get Alstom steam turbines

meet Saudi Arabia’s increasing electricitydemands as it will supply sweet water andfeed the grid in the western part of thecountry where the cities of Jeddah, Yanbuand the holy cities Mecca and Medinah arelocated. The balance power and extracted steam

will be fed into the associated new Yanbu550’000 m3/d desalination plant whichwill be a key supplier of water to the cityof Medinah.“The Yanbu 3 project will add 2700 MW

of cleaner high-efficiency power to theSaudi grid and steam to a newdesalination plant thanks to our market-leading supercritical technology combinedwith Alstom’s ability to integrateequipment into complete and complexpower projects,” Andreas Lusch, the

Senior Vice President for Alstom’s steambusiness told MEP’s George Ronayne in arecent interview.

Alstom has equipped over 20% of SaudiArabia’s installed power generation base. Its steam turbine technology also featuresin Shoaiba – the region’s biggest powerplant and aptly called the ‘Giant of theMiddle East’. Its environmental control systems in

operation at projects like Rabigh IPP,Shoaiba 3 and Yanbu 2 are enabling thecountry to reduce power plant emissions.

Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply equipment for the Yanbu 3 power & desalinationplant located on the Red Sea coast, in western Saudi Arabia. This will be one of the country’s

first supercritical power plants to run on heavy fuel oil, reports MEP’s George Ronayne.

GEN-SETS

Saudi Aramco is seeking to increase oilproduction to one million barrels aday and achieve a 5 – 6% increase in

gas extraction every year. To reach these production levels Saudi

Aramco required a large-scale installationof generator sets on site to be tenderedvia main contractor, Samsung EngineeringLtd.

The contract was secured in May 2011 bythe sole FG Wilson Dealer in Saudi Arabia,Tamgo, and involved the supply of 128generator sets ranging from 13 – 750 kVA.

The FG Wilson generator sets mustoperate in extreme weather conditions, including ambient temperatures of 55°Cand regular dust storms.

The FG Wilson generator sets areproviding power to the compound for theresidencies, offices and construction siteinvolved with the extraction of naturalgas.

Samsung Engineering Ltd also delivered11 new gas-turbine generators and 44compressors which will now generate anadditional 729MW of power at Shaybah.

This will power a new plant capable ofprocessing 2.4 billion cubic feet of gas perday and 264,000 barrels of liquids

Gen-sets for SaudiArabia’s gas extraction facilities

destined for Saudi Arabia’s growing petro-chemicals sector.

Responsible for the supply, delivery andcommissioning of the 128 generator sets,Tamgo travelled over 1,200 km to theoperating site three to four times permonth to co-ordinate the project andconduct ongoing maintenance andservicing with the generator setsoperating in such harsh conditions.Tamgo’s expertise and high customerservice levels has led to an ongoing

contract with SaudiAramco - it recentlyincreased its orderto 140 generatorsets in total.

Tamgo’s outstand-ing commitment tosupport & maintainthe installation ofthe generator setssince the projectbegan in 2011 hasled to a long-termrelationship withSaudi Aramco. With

more orders on the horizon, this project isdue to be completed in 2016.

Islam Fathy, Product Manager at Tamgo, comments: “We are pleased to say wehave designed, delivered and alsocommissioned 140 generator sets on siteat present – all without a hitch.

“We are delighted to have forged a longterm relationship with SamsungEngineering and Saudi Aramco which wehope will continue long into the future.”

Mr Edward Jung, Cost Engineer ofShaybah NGL Recovery & Utilities Project(Package No.2) at Samsung Engineering, comments: “Saudi Aramco had a largeproject and needed a company that wascapable to install a quality, cost-effectivesolution in complex weather conditions.

“FG Wilson and Tamgo have provenexpertise in delivering large scale projectswith success so we had no doubt theywould be the perfect partners to deliverthis project seamlessly.”
