Interdepartmental Communication

50 clinical staff members separated into six different departmentsEach department has their own specific areas of expertise that they focus on

Physical Therapy Department: focuses on a patient’s mobility and lower body strengthOccupational Therapy: focuses on upper body function and hand strength

A great amount of interdisciplinary communication to ensure all clients receive the greatest level of care.

CommunicationEach department must document each day on the type of therapy that was performed and any changes made to each patient.In order to go over patient status updates and changes Mentis has implemented a weekly “rounds” meeting

During this meeting staff members go through each patient one by one and each department gives updates of each patientAccording to staff members, this is the best way to ensure information is getting from one department to another

Problem

The problem is the lack of communication between the departments. You have two units all working separately on one patient. There is no communication between the departments to provide total healthcare for the patients.

Solution

The solution is to bring all of the units together by implementing a dry erase communication board that will help facilitate interdisciplinary communication.
