Introduction

• What is Personality Disorder?

Personality Disorder

A personality disorder is a type of mental illness in which you have trouble perceiving and relating to situations and to people including

yourself.

MPDDefinition:

A rare dissociative disorder in which two or more personalities with distinct memory and behavior pattern apparently exist in one individual.

OR

Multiple personality disorder describes a condition in which a person displays multiple alters, each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment.

Alter / Alter Ego

Definition:

The different personalities that occur are called “ALTERS”

In some cases identities can resemble the main personality or they may be a different age, sex, race, or religion.

Explanation

• It is a condition marked by a temporary disruption in one’s memory, consciousness or self identity

• It is the most extreme kind of dissociation• A person who is under control of one identity is usually unable to

remember some of the events that occurred while other personalities were in control

• Each personality can have its own set of gestures, hairstyle, as well as a distinct way of dressing

TYPES OF DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER

• Dissociative Amnesia

• Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID) or MPD

• Depersonalization Disorder

During 18th to 20th century many cases lead to the discovery of disorder, However, it is the case of Sybil Isabel Dorsett which is considered "the most important clinical case of multiple personality in the twentieth century". It is certainly one of the most famous after the publication of the book "Sybil: The true story of a woman possessed by sixteen separate personalities" by Flora Rheta Schreiber. Sybil was the victim of horrific abuse inflicted on her by her psychotic mother. Her father failed to protect her from it. As a result, she developed the alter personalities. She was unaware of her other personas; while they were in 'control' of the body, Sybil suffered blackouts and did not remember the events. Dr. Wilbur helped Sybil integrate the personalities after sixteen years of therapy.

SYMPTOMS

DIAGNOSIS

• The presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states

• At least two of the identities or personality states repeatedly take control of the person’s behavior

• An inability to recall important personal information that is too severe to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness

• The illness is not the result of the direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition (for example, seizures)

• In children, the symptoms are not caused by imaginary playmates or other fantasy play

TREATMENT• The most common treatment for MPD is long term psychotherapy

twice a week

• The treatment of MPD lasts an average of four years

CAUSES• Childhood abuse• Social environment of the patient• Problems in brain functioning• Torture• Children who undergo a routine of torture

and neglect create a “fantasy” world in order to escape their situation

CONCLUSION

The treatment for MPD is a long term treatment which doesn’t last for long. It is almost impossible to treat it, In such a case a person has to manage to live with all

his/her alters.
