MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSE St John Reference: MHFA152 The 12-hour Mental Health First Aid course teaches adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. The course curriculum is based on the Mental Health Guidelines and is accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia. COST Public course $250 ($230 concession) per individual Private (onsite) course with a maximum of 18 participants $2600 WHO CAN ATTEND? Any interested adult can attend. Please note this course is not a therapy or support group, rather it is an education course to learn how to give first aid to others. COURSE DURATION: 2 DAY = 12 hours COURSE FORMAT This is a 12-hour course, which can be delivered as either: A 2-day training package (6 hours per day, either consecutive days or 2 separate days), OR As 4 separate training modules of 3 hours each We recommend 2 consecutive days for best outcomes, but flexibility of this model can be provided. Course participants receive a copy of the Standard MHFA Manual, information guides and handouts, and a Certificate of Completion. An additional Certificate of Accreditation can be gained, and information on how to achieve this will be provided in the course. OUR FACILITATOR Our facilitator for this course is fully accredited with MHFA Australia, and is required to maintain her accreditation through regular development and course delivery. COURSE CONTENT Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation. Developing mental health problems covered are: Depression Anxiety problems Psychosis Substance use problems Mental health crisis situations covered are: Suicidal thoughts and behaviours Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm) Panic attacks Traumatic events Severe effects of drug or alcohol use Severe psychotic states Aggressive behaviours All MHFA Courses teach how to give the mental health first aid using the MHFA Action Plan ALGEE. The 12-hour Mental Health First Aid course teaches adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental health first aid course flyer

OUR TRAINERSt John SA is proud to introduce our own accredited Mental Health First Aid trainer, Rae-Anne Holloway. Rae-Anne is trained and accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and has considerable experience training this course and mentoring other aspiring Mental Health First Aid trainers.

In addition to her extensive Mental Health experience, Rae-Anne is an accomplished facilitator and public speaker, has MBTI (Myer Briggs Type Indicator) Certification, Child Safe Environments Accreditation, A Certificate IV in Mental Health, A Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, a Certificate III in Community Services Work, and is currently training with St John as a First Aid Trainer.

Rae-Anne’s work experience is also testament to her outstanding suitability for her role with St John SA. She has held leadership and training roles with Centrelink in Adelaide and Darwin; worked as Director of an Aussie Relief Organisation in Ghana; has been a senior learning specialist with a National Learning Network,; and Program Manager for a Community Detention Program.
