Welcome to the 40th season of ASU Men’s Lacrosse. It is with great anticipation and excitement that we enter the 2008 season. We have a talented team that gained valuable experience during 2007, including the WCLL playoffs and MCLA National Championship Tournament. We’ll be back!

I am personally excited to have the opportunity to coach at ASU. I will use my NCAA Division I and Major League Lacrosse experience to take our program to the next level. Our goals include a WCLL Division I Championship, an MCLA Championship, and a win over the University of Arizona. To meet our goals, we must build and maintain an infrastructure that consistently places our program among the best in the MCLA. We need to play the most competitive schedule possible. We need to recruit the best players and put the resources in place to monitor and assist them with their academics. We need to secure financial resources that allows us to keep player’s dues reasonable, hire additional coaches and fund travel during the season as well as the off season. We need to improve our field resources

for practices and to enhance the spectator experience during our games. We need to also enhance our alumni relationships.

Playing collegiate lacrosse is a valuable life experience for the players, but it requires a huge commitment and significant discipline. Players have the opportunity to travel and compete against other collegiate athletes at major universities. They will build personal relationships with their teammates that will last a lifetime. Athletics offer other aspects of their collegiate experience beyond the academics. But this comes at a high cost, financially, mentally and physically. Players must manage their academics, and personal lives while making the time to condition, practice, travel and play the sport. Their hard work now will pay life dividends later.

As I adjust to the MCLA environment, I am reminded daily of the need to raise funds to support our lacrosse program. Player dues cover approximately 50% of our total financial requirements. We need the ongoing support of our alumni, parents, family, fans and friends to maintain our efforts. If you have already supported our 2008 season, we thank you. If not, please consider a donation. We need everyone to support us at our games, purchase your Sun Devil merchandise and lend us your financial support.

You can email me at [email protected] to discuss how you can help.

Our 2008 goal is to “Be the Best!”

Sincerely,Chris MaloneHead CoachASU Men’s Lacrosse

ASU plays in Division I of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL). The WCLL is broken up into four regions - Central, Los Angeles, North and South Regions. The Western Collegiate Lacrosse League is one of nine conferences, spread from coast to coast, that is governed by the MCLA (Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association). These conferences have both Division I and II.

This national organization of men’s collegiate club teams was formed in the Fall of 2006 to provide more direct attention to collegiate club lacrosse and it replaces the old USL MDIA. The MCLA provides a governing structure much like the NCAA, with eligibility rules, national polls, All-America awards and a National tournament to decide a National champion. The MCLA continues to grow each season. 201 teams will compete under the MCLA banner in the spring of 2008 in the different conferences. More growth is expected in the future, as the sport of lacrosse continues its rapid expansion at the high school and youth levels. Those players are expected to gravitate toward collegiate club lacrosse around the nation.

semi-final game against Sacramento State with the score of 11-10. The lead changed 5 times as the Devils defeated the defending champs. The Sun Devils were 5-2 in conference play and 5-4 overall. In the WCLL Semi-final game against UC-Irvine, Steve Adamick ran the length of the field and scored an impossible angle goal with less than 30 second to send the game into overtime. The Devils won the game in overtime. In the final seconds of the Championship game against UC-Santa Cruz, in an unsettled situation, Pete Landers found a wide open Matt Ogden on the crease. In August 2007 Chris Malone was announced as the new head coach of the Sun Devil’s Men’s Lacrosse team. He came to ASU, as he believed the team has a talented group of players coming off a great season. He plans to use that momentum to further improve the ASU program. ASU enters the 2008 season with a #6 national ranking in the MCLA.

Chris has five years of prior coaching experience, including two years at Loyola Blakefield High School and three years of the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant coach. As the offensive coordinator at Loyola Blakefield in 2002 and 2007, the team was nationally ranked 5th and 2nd respectively by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. At the University of Pennsylvania, Malone was in charge of offensive players, goalies and recruiting. During his tenure in 2004 they

made the NCAA Division I playoff tournament and finished the year ranked 13th in the country. This was Penn’s first tournament appearance since 1989.

Chris’ lacrosse career began at age 8 in Baltimore, MD. He graduated from Loyola Blakefield in Towson, MD in 1997. His career continued at the University of Maryland as a two-time All American midfielder. He led Maryland in goals in 2000 and was a team captain in 2001. He was named a two-time scholar athlete and was a two time recipient of the William Cole memorial Award, which was presented to the most outstanding midfielder at Maryland. He tallied 60 goals and 37 assists in his four-year career in College Park. Chris was a participant in the 1998 NCAA Div. I Championship Game.

After graduating, Chris was selected 10th overall in the Major League Lacrosse draft in 2001 by the New Jersey Pride. He was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage for the 2005 Season. The Chicago Machine selected him in the 2006 expansion draft. That season he had 14 goals and 5 assists in 11 games.

In addition to ASU Men’s Lacrosse, Chris is involved with Starz Lacrosse.

2008 will be the second season Tom Ghaney serves as an assistant coach for ASU Men’s Lacrosse, where he serves as the offensive coach. Tom joined the staff in 2007 under WCLL Coach of the Year Adam Hopkins.

Ghaney is a 2003 graduate of the University of Arizona where he majored in econom-ics and minored in business administration. He played lacrosse as a midfielder for University of Arizona for three seasons, helping them with three appearances in the WCLL playoffs and two trips to the National Championship Tournament.

He played both hockey and lacrosse at Massapequa High School on Long Island. As a senior member of the lacrosse team, he was a starter and one of the top face-off players on Long Island. Tom helped lead his team to the Nassau County playoffs. Tom also garnered many accolades during his hockey career including winning a Long Island Championship and setting a school record for assists. He was a two-time captain and played for the Long Island Juniors All Star Team that competed across the country.

In addition to coaching at ASU, Tom is the Director of Retail Operations for Elite Lacrosse in Scottsdale, AZ.

Amanda Parsley, ATC is a graduate student in the athletic training program in the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at the Arizona School of Health Sciences of A. T.
