This year marks the 10th season ofa youth football development programin Menomonee Falls, as the JuniorIndians club organization teams havebeen playing during the past month.

Both Lou Sanicola and I love thegame and we love giving back to thecommunity. Even if you have a bad dayat work, its fun to see these kids, saidDoug Menne, who was one of thefounding members of the Junior Indians

football organization.The Junior Indians fields teams fromthe fifth through eighth grade levels,with 40 coaches on the various teamsand approximately 200 players in theprogram.

Menne noted that players in theprogram were later part of the 2009Menomonee Falls High School teamthat made it to the state Division Ichampionship.

The numbers (of participants)seem to be improving for the highschool and thats important for a feed-er program, and trying to instill intothose kids respect, personal responsi-bility and the fundamentals of football thats what this is all about, Mennesaid.

Menne said the Junior Indians was

formed to be a feeder organization forthe high school program and seeks toemulate the offensive and defensiveschemes used at the high school levelto prepare students for that level ofplay.

Menne noted that he and Sanicolaare involved with Junior Indians activi-ties year round. All coaches go througha background check and trainers are atevery practice. Menne said the all-vol-

unteer board overseeing the JuniorIndians has added members to handlethe administrative tasks with the pro-gram.

I really didnt think Id be doingthis as long as I have, Menne said,noting that both he and Sanicola haveseen sons in the program who havesince graduated from high school.

Megann Schnickel knows how to throw a party.Thats what her closest friends and family members say

nd thats why they are coming together to host a party ofeir own as Schnickel fights a valiant battle against breastancer.

She has always thrown one heck of a party, said long-me friend Danielle Bernard. She would always volunteer toe the host for friends who became independent consultantsnd she loves throwing birthday parties, theme parties,alloween parties...Ironically, I thought about it the other daynd I can guarantee she would have been the first to suggestbenefit for me or any one of her other friends if this had hap-ened to them.

And she would have planned things out perfectly!ernard added.

Thats exactly what her loved ones are in the process ofoing as they get ready for a Hawaiian-themed fundraisingash at Lucky Joes Tiki Roomlocated at 196 S. 2nd St. inilwaukees Third Wardon Saturday, Sept. 21. Activities willclude a large silent auction, basket raffles, food and bever-ges and a bake sale. The benefit will begin at 3 p.m. andawings will take place at 6 p.m.

It's going to be a luau theme with a Hawaiian band andancers and authentic Hawaiian food, said Bernard.

The public is invited to come and help raise money for the6-year-old Menomonee Falls residentmarried to husbandatt for 14 years and mother of sons Christian, 14, and

ayden, 9as she deals with not only a life-altering medicalisis, but also the loss of her health insurance. Schnickel loster insurance in July, the same month she was diagnosed witheast cancer.

Her diagnosis couldn't have come at a worse time,ernard said. She was losing her health insurance at the end

July and she had a million things to do before the end of

August, but cancer doesn't wait and she didn't want to risk it.A teacher at Children's Community Center in the village

since 1997, Schnickel had a lot on her plate at that time, butstill she forged ahead, undergoing a double mastectomyreconstruction on Aug 15, starting her fall semester of collegeon time and showing up ready to teach the first day of school.

Megann has seriously been a rock through all of this,marveled Bernard. We all knew she was a strong person,but cancer tests even the strongest rocks. She's not only keptit together, she's soared above and beyond.

It helps that Schnickel is surrounded by a close-knit circleof friends that is more like family, said Bernard, who met

Schnickel when she started dating Bernards friend Matt whobecame the teachers husband.And Matt was actually the one who that same year intro-

duced me to my now husband, Corey, of 11 years! Bernardshared, adding that when she, Matt and sister-in-law MargieSchnickel set out to plan the party, everyone quickly jumpedon board with the idea.

Hamilton's offense put up impressiveumbers against West Allis Central Sept. 6, the Chargers won 49-8.

The Chargers ran up 543 yards of totalfense to 243 yards for the Bulldogs.amilton's Drew Patterson ran 12 times for32 yards and three touchdowns whileaiah Webb ran four times for 127 yardsnd two touchdowns.

While Hamilton's offense ran up big num-ers, it was the defense that set up severaloring opportunities. Central opened theame with a 7-play drive that started at itswn 27-yard line and got as far as thehargers 32-yard line. However, the drivended when Hamilton's Will Watkinsepped in front of a Will Konocny pass fore interception. On Hamilton's first play,atterson ran up the middle for 78-yards ate first score at the 9:09 mark of the game.

"They (the defense) always put us in aood position, they really rallied to the ball,"amilton Coach John Damato said after-ard. "They had a great week of practicend it was evident tonight."

Family Pet Clinic in Menomonee Falls has beenroviding top-quality veterinary care to a strongase of loyal and satisfied clients for more than 21ears.

I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was a kid;s all I ever wanted to be, said Dr. Scott Fellenz

who opened the clinic in 1992. The clinic featuresour experienced doctors and a knowledgeabletaff of receptionists and veterinary assistants.

Fellenz is a 1987 graduate of the University ofWisconsin-Madison, which was the charter class ofhe new veterinary school. The doctor practiced inMarshfield, Menomonee Falls and New Berlin

efore deciding to open his own clinic. A Falls resi-ent for the past 24 years, he lives with his wife

Arlo, daughters Alexis and Ashtyn, and their familyets.

The other doctors are Dr. Kemberlie Anderson,Dr. Carolyn Bernier and Dr. Dara Morrison-

The clinic also makes convenience a priority byffering on-site services such as affordable dentistry,igital X-rays, Ultrasounds, chemotherapy for can-er patients and board certified consultations.

We do all these things right here in the clinicnstead of having to send the client to a specialist,Helland said. Dr. Fellenz is excited about offeringew diagnostic procedures such as rhinoscopy tovaluate nasal cavity problems in dogs and digital

dental x-rays.Other services and products offered include:

an on-site pharmacy; senior wellness care; prescrip-tion food such as Iams, Eukanuba, Hills ScienceDiet and Waltham; ACL repairs; and microchipping.Also, pet grooming is now available.

The continuous pursuit of education by the doc-tors and staff is another way the clinic stays on thecutting-edge of the field. This enables them to pro-vide a better quality of care to their patients,Helland said.

Our doctors attend veterinary seminars andsymposiums every year to expand their knowledgebase and be able to give clients the most currentinformation, said Helland.

And community involvement is key, Hellandnoted, sharing how the clinic participates in the vil-lages annual pet fair and assists with the highschools Reality Check business class, teachingstudents the costs and care involved with owning apet. The clinic also makes regular contributions tothe Companion Animal Fund which funds researchinto diseases such as cancer.

Staying involved in the community is veryimportant to us, said Helland, adding that 21 yearsmakes a statement that no verbal proclamation can.

I enjoy practicing in this community because ofthe love people have for their pets, said Fellenz.

It just shows the longevity and loyalty our

clients have shown us and that we have returned tothem, Helland said. Our clients are comfortablewith us and can feel confident that their pets willreceive the best care and that we will be here forthem when they need us.

Germantown Library HistoryIn 1962, long-time Germantown resident and for-

mer bank president Emma Duerrwaechter surprisedthe community by donating $30,000 for a buildingto be used as Germantowns first library. Born in1881, Emma grew up and attended school inGermantown. She followed her father, Philip G.Duerrwaechter, into the family banking business. In1923, Emma was voted director and bank president.She was known as Wisconsins First Lady ofBanking, and remained president of the bank until1959. She passed away in 1969 at the age of 87.

Germantowns first library was built on landdonated by the Germantown Volunteer FireDepartment. With Emma Duerrwaechters generousdonation, an 1,800 square foot library was built onPark Avenue near Firemans Park. In 1960,Germantowns population was 622. Initially thenew library had about 2,000 holding and was openfor 20 hours per week. By the late 1970s, thelibrarys holdings had grown to 19,000 and morespace was needed to provide library service forGermantowns growing population. To this day, theformer library still stands at Firemans Park andcontinues to house the offices of the Germantown

Volunteer Fire Company.By 1980, Germantowns population had

increased dramatically to 10,731. TheDuerrwaechter Memorial Library on Park Streethad outgrown its 1,800 square foot building. In a1981 referendum, taxpayers approved an 8,800square foot library on Village property off MequonRoad. When the new library opened in July of 1982,it had over 19,000 holding and a circulation of 52,398.

Over the next 20 years, the Village of

Germantowns population continued to grow, as didlibrary usage. For example between 1987 and 1996,circulation increased by 61%. In the 2000 census,Germantowns population increased to 18,260. Bythe end of 2001, the librarys holdings had increasedto 83,896, and library circulation reached an all-time high of 202,720.

In 1998, initial approval was given for a newexpandable library facility to be built to the west ofthe current library. The third Germantown Librarybuilding opened in 2002. This 26,000 square footbuilding can be expanded by 13,000 square feet inthe future.
