What family history, in addition to Judge, ties you to the Menlo campus?DH: My mother’s brothers graduated from Menlo in the 1930’s before Menlo was a college. My two brothers graduated in the 1970’s when it was a full college. Uncle Jack [Judge Russell] started at Menlo in 1938, so Menlo has always been part of our family history. I enjoyed visiting my Aunt Luly (Lucille) and Uncle Jack on weekends in the 1960’s when I was in college nearby. What is your favorite memory of being on the Menlo campus?DH: It isn’t so much a memory as an overall good feeling about being here in part because of my family’s history. I feel a sense of stewardship in the place.What was there about Judge that connected him with his students?DH: He cared about them deeply. Many felt that they were his

adopted sons because he took them under his wing. Faculty lived on campus and would have

students in for dinner or to play bridge. Because Judge and Aunt Luly didn’t have kids of their own, the students became their kids.What is your most rewarding experience

from working at Menlo?DH: I feel a deep connection to the campus, to

the College as an educational institution, and especially to the students.What do you think Judge would think about the current direction of the College?DH: Judge would be delighted to see the col-lege thriving. Jim Kelly brought back our focus on students as our #1 priority. Sprucing up the campus with flowers, painting, new equipment, and classroom refurbishing has made a world of difference. There’s a positive energy on campus that seems to have a life of its own. Watching the College regain the heights that Uncle Jack had overseen has been amazing, and I am

proud to have contributed. Jim is just like Judge in that he has a clear vision, he has a mission, and he makes it happen.If Judge were here today, what advice do you think he would have for President Jim Kelly?DH: I think he would say to keep on doing what he is doing.It works.
