Causes of Meningiomas Not clear on whatexactly causes Meningiomas Radiation (people who undergo radiation to the brain) Cell Mutates/AlterIn the meninges
Symptoms of Meningiomas
Seizures Visual changes Hearing loss Changes in thinking Arm and/or leg weakness Headaches Nausea Vomiting
Benign Meningiomas Usually Harmless Not cancerous
Atypical Meningiomas Grow more rapidly than
benign Have a higher chance of
growing back
Malignant or Anaplastic Meningiomas
Form of CANCER!! Also more likely to grow back
Surgery!!
Starting surgery, the skull is cut open.
During the doctors cautiously remove the tumor.
After the wound is then stapled\stitched closed as shown.
Surgery Complications!! Accumulation of fluid 20% develop
seizures after surgery
neurologic problems(muscle weakness,
speech problems, or difficulty with coordination)
increased risk of blood clots
Radiation Treatment Radiation
Therapy High energy
x-rays to damage tumor cells
Usually after surgery recovery
Side Effects of Radiation Therapy
May damage nearby Brain Tissue
Cant stop all tumor cells from growing
