PRINCIPAL’S NOTES Year 12 Graduation

It was wonderful to be joined by students, staff, parents and invited guests (including past MCS students) for our Year 12 Graduation function last Friday night at the Mendooran Merrygoen Memorial Club. We farewelled Shania Taufa, Kaitlyn Thomson, Derek Washbrook, Kurt Williams and Roy Griffith, who all looked amazing! The night was very well organised by Mrs Mulligan, Mrs Norwood and Mr Smyth. Several of our students volunteered to wait on tables and to help in setting up and packing up. Kylie Walden and her team prepared a beautiful meal. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make the evening a success. Special mention to Mrs Mulligan for her superb effort as Master of Ceremonies.

Lake Keepit Years 3&4, very weary staff (teaching and SLSOs) and parent helpers returned from three days at Lake Keepit last Friday. The excursion was a resounding success, with activities including a Mud run, High and Low Ropes Courses as well as Archery. Many thanks to the parents who gave of their time to ensure the excursion ran smoothly. Thank you to all staff for their hard work and to Miss McIntyre and Mrs Norris for their organisation of this memorable event.

Primary Intensive Swimming Our Primary Intensive Swimming Program begins today at the local pool. There are a few outstanding notes and payments. This is a very important event on the school calendar and students gain vital survival skills. If you have neglected to return notes, please do so ASAP. Students not participating will be completing written work at school.

2017 Planning Last week the Executive Team, including our School Administrative Manager, met to allocate budgets and look at staffing entitlements for 2017. As our anticipated enrolments are up from the beginning of last year, we have gained the staffing to maintain four classes in Primary and enough staffing to further broaden the curriculum in Secondary. The Secondary staff are discussing options with prospective senior students at the moment. School Council will meet soon to explore staffing possibilities.

Mrs McGirr Next Friday we will be farewelling Mrs Elizabeth (Beth) McGirr, with an afternoon tea under the Paulownia trees near the BER. Mrs McGirr leaves us after a rich teaching career of 45 years as a Class Room Teacher and a Learning Support Teacher. Her contribution to school life and her artistic endeavours helped shape our school. If you would like to attend, please let the office staff know for catering purposes by Wednesday 30th November.

2017 Primary Captains All parents and guests are invited to attend the Primary Captain speeches which will be held this, Friday 25th November at 10am in the Years 5/6 classroom.

YEARS 1/2 CLASS NEWS YEARS 1/2 CLASS NEWS YEARS 1/2 CLASS NEWS Friday we farewelled Nazarena from the 1/2 Class as she is moving to the United States for up to two years. She has been a wonderful part of our class and we have enjoyed having her. We had some chocolate crackles on Friday afternoon on the lawn behind our classroom and gave Nazarena a little book filled with photos of the students in our class there were many laughs, and a few tears! This week swimming commences and students in the 1/2 class will be heading to the pool at around 1:45 and back to school in time for buses (Remember to bring a plastic bag to put wet swimmers and towel into when we are finished). Due to swimming, there will be no homework sheets going home this week and next week, the only homework is to continue reading each day.

YEARS 3/4 CLASS NEWS Wow! What a great few days 3/4 had away at Lake Keepit! It was great to see the students really stretching their comfort zone and trying new things…even if it looked a little scary! I know I am still in recovery mode! This week our Intensive Swimming Program begins. Years 3/4 along with Years 5/6 will leave school at 11.30am each day to walk to the pool and return at the beginning of lunch. Please remember to bring in your notes and swimmers! Swimming runs for two weeks. We will be completing our assessments this week as I am currently report writing. Homework is as normal this week. Don’t forget that the Mendooran Rodeo is on this weekend at the showground. It’s shaping up to be a great day and evening out! Have a great Week 7.

Kindergarten/Year One Class News Congratulations to all of the Pre-school children who attended ‘big’ school for their orientation sessions. We look forward to you all attending ‘big’ school next year. The Intensive Swim Program commences today! All students will need their swimmers, towel, hat and sunscreen each day over the two week program. Mrs Norwood will be coordinator with staff and parents assisting during the program.

LAKE KEEPIT EXCURSION Last week Year 3/4 travelled by coach to Lake Keepit. We assembled at 7am, bright eyed and ready to take on the world! Myself, Mrs Norris, Kelly, Craig, Luke Hunt, Candy and Pete Leask and Renee Morrow joined a very excited group of children for the three days. Upon arrival at camp we met our team leaders, Matt and Oscar; two energetic and brave young men who proved to be quite humorous in their approach to getting us out of our comfort zone. They briefed us on our itinerary. After quickly finding our rooms and unpacking we headed straight to the “Bull Pen” then off to the Low Ropes. This proved to be an activity of skill and trust, having to balance and walk along ropes with the help of team mates. Later that day came the true test of grit and bravery: the Giant Swing! I must admit, it was an anxious wait for all involved. Pulling our class mate to the top of the pole was the easy part. I commend all students who participated! Myself, Kelly and Luke all “enjoyed” the exhilarating feeling of the near death-like drop! Canoeing out on the lake was most enjoyable and it was best to stay away from the boys’ canoe, ably lead by Mr Hunt who felt the need to seek and destroy – well splash all those in their path! We arrived at the much anticipated Mud Run! I can tell you, we ALL left different looking people! It was a great chance to work as a team and make your way around the course with many an obstacle to conquer and mud fight to have! Again, Mr Hunt proved to be the class serial pest and lead the boys astray. They worked very well as a team to dunk Mrs Norris, Kelly and I in the mud pits! We all had a great time! Other activities such as the Monkey Tree Climb required very serious team work and trust! Climbing trees has never been so easy….or that should be hard! Archery saw a game of skill involved of who could aim and fire onto the targets. We had many turns, each time improving our aim! Night activities included a Mini Olympics and a Disco Night. We were also lucky enough to be able to go swimming each afternoon in the pool. Early Friday came the task of packing up….things never fit back in your bag as they were when we arrived!!! Many bags were filled with wet, muddy, dirty clothes. A sign of a great time by all. Thanks to Years 3/4 and to our wonderful staff and parents! V McIntyre

Secondary News Well done to all the Year 7, 8, 9 & 10 students who sat their yearly Exams last week. You all composed yourself extremely well during the exams, and your teachers are marking them like mad to get them back to you ASAP, so good luck with your results. Just because the exams are over, doesn’t mean that classes are finished, so make sure you all apply yourself in class, as we are still writing your report comments. Don’t blow it in the last couple of weeks. We are now packing up the Science Lab for the big refurbishment and we could still use some more boxes, so if you have any empty cardboard boxes at home see if you can drop them off at the Lab. Wednesday 16th November Becci Sciberras was awarded the Victor Chang Science Award, for recognition of her performance in Science throughout her Year 11 studies. There were twenty three Year 11 students who were presented the award for their school at a special award ceremony held at the Dubbo College Senior Campus. Students who receive the award are nominated by their teacher as demonstrating the highest achievement in Science throughout the year. These students will now have the opportunity to visit the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and carry out a Science Experiment under the guidance of leading Researchers from the Institute. Congratulations Becci!
