StoryuntellerThere is a time to toll bells, and a time to teach the bells silence. There is a time to cast out the line, and a time to reel in the line, a time to tell stories and a time to untell stories. That last is my job.

The storyunteller flips through fairy tales backwards so the romantic tosh will fall out. Here’s Queen Cinderella beside her still faithful consort at a banquet the evening happily ever after is about to end.

Here’s the handsome prince putting the gold ring on her finger. In this next one, lackeys are looking for the slim foot that fits the glass slipper. Here the footwear glitters on the palace steps after the ball.

And now the stepmother and her two daughters are discussing the upcoming fete, sipping aperitifs, picking over a box of truffles from a famed confectioner while Cinderella scrapes ashes from the hearth.

She’ll scrape that way forever, on her hands and knees, pushing aside stray hanks of lank hair falling into her smudged face, ashes and grime like black crescent moons under her broken fingernails.

SeedsPssst! She’s strolling down the aisle minding her own business when a packet of pumpkin seeds starts speaking to her. You up there with the designer purse. Shoplift us. We’re illegal. Please.

These are the last of the non-genetically modified. They claim to be the originals, the seeds that famous pumpkin-eater Peter with the unpalatable wife spit out. They can’t be bought anywhere.

There’s nothing fishy about their pedigree. No trout genes have been spliced into their chromosomes. No foxes or flying squirrels are lurking in their genetic woodpiles. Not like GMO seeds.

Those guys take the spice out of getting dirty and watered. Nothing affects the GMOs, not pesticides or pollen. They’re sexless. Teflon. They never win wet t-shirt contests or let their hair down.

RattleA jalopy will capture it, a baby play with it, a bobbysoxer shake and roll with it. Listen. The rattle might mean your fuel pump is wobbly, or a pair of fangs about to shoot poison into the flesh of your calf.

Dice do it, and buttons in a glass jar. It might be in the last breath you take. Dried peas in a pod do it. Faulty loudspeakers do it, and hecklers, and marbles loose in pockets or between a poet’s ears.

Over there, in that old pile of autumn leaves, it’s the first breath of a storm. That little rattle, no bigger than the yowl of a newborn held by the ankles and slapped into life, may be a hurricane by nightfall.

DetectiveI was the first gumshoe in the garden after that caper with the apple. Figured I’d find a fruit with teeth marks, a core, a sloughed snakeskin, prints, some sign of original sin. Nada. Not a clue.

Couldn’t pin a thing on the perps, even though they fessed up to being in Paradise at the time of the crime. Put them in the line-up with other felons clad in fig leaves. Eeny meeny miney mo. No go.

Problem was, no witnesses. Population of Paradise was only two. Them. The perps protested their innocence. Couldn’t hold them without a habeas or a corpus, and their rap sheets were blank.

I’ll get them. Crime runs in families, like eye color or musical talent. It can’t be kept down. Sooner or later. Meanwhile, I’m keeping a close eye on their offspring, those shifty characters Cain and Abel.

CheeseYou should never ever write or even speak the name of the Big Cheese—oops, sorry, my bad—up above, never take the name of the dairy product made with rennet in vain. Same goes for me.

You may think I’m only a blue-veined squirt of a Roquefort or a Swiss full of holes, but listen to me. Someday a cunning devil with a black demon box of a device will urge you to relax and to smile.

The cunning one will ask you to say the word that begins with C that tells what I am. Don’t. It’s a trick to steal the moment. You’ll squint at nothing throughout eternity. You’ll need a haircut forever.

It’s a scam to capture your soul, a fatal game, that looking at the little birdie and saying the forbidden C word. If you do hear a click, a snap like the snap of a very tiny mousetrap, you’ve already lost.

SoapI know every inch. I suds all your delicate and most intimate parts. I co-star in commercials featuring fetching lassies and handsome lads. But do you really care about me, or are you just using me?

You claim that cleanliness is next to godliness. The cleaner you are, the less I am. Keep this up and pretty soon I’ll be little more than a ring in the tub, a faint whiff of gardenias under an armpit.

I’m just a slippery splinter now. By the time you’re close enough to tug God’s nose or step on His toes, I’ll be gone. But don’t forget, when you stride into heaven at last, I’m the one who got you there.

Joe Smith, who sometimes plays the straight man to himself, has been investigating flora, fauna, and folderol on the Mendocino coast for three decades. Though his work has appeared in Manhattan Poetry Review, Birmingham Poetry Review, Prospect Review and other magazines, he has not yet appeared on Comedy Central.
