THE FEMALE BRAIN
Which brain is female, which is male?
Agree or Disagree?
• Women gossip more than men– According to the British research company
onepoll.com, men gossip more than women (men 76 minutes/day, women 52 minutes/day)
– Men prefer gossiping in the office, whereas women prefer being home with their friends
– Topics of conversation are different: the most attractive women at the office (for men) versus other women (for women)
– Men and women gossip to feel part of the group, to belong
– According to the study, 1/3 of men said gossiping is better than sexual relations (??) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/5082866/Men-spend-more-time-gossiping-than-women-poll-finds.html

Agree or Disagree?• Men are good listenershttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJv1pLDHmak&feature=related
Agree or Disagree?• Women care more about their
personal appearance than men– “Metrosexuals”
Men’s cologne commercial
•What does this commercial say about “real” men?•“manly man”/”real” man doesn’t care about hair products, etc
“Man Exchange” How does the media show us what is masculine?
Woman exchanges her “metrosexual” boyfriend for a “Bud Light” man
Power + Skin care How does this commercial show us what is masculine? Why is this commercial different from the other two?
Commercials• The Dove commercial shows us that you
can be powerful and caring – Big, nice, masculine car & baby– Man on motorcycle with little dog on his back– Therefore, you can care about your
skin/appearance but be masculine (it’s okay to be metrosexual, it’s not a bad thing)
– = buy Dove Men’s Care!• The other two commercials show us that
“real men” are not metrosexual and do not care as much about their appearance
Personal Appearance, continued– Hair salon
– Facials, manicures for men– Positives: “metrosexuality” changes traditional
stereotypes—more acceptable for men to care about appearance, etc
– Dieting• A study from the University of Nebraska Lincoln found
college women to be more conscious of their weight and more likely to diet than college men. Among men, 45.2% were overweight or obese, compared to 13.9% of women. But 57.4% of the women said they needed to lose weight, compared to 28.6% of the men.
Women in the Workforce
Inequalities• Women and education
– There are an estimated 781 million illiterate adults in the world, about 64% of whom are women. (UNESCO)
– There are 103.5 million out-of-school children, of which 57% are girls. (UNESCO)
• 84% of parliamentary seats across the world are held by men (United Nations).
• For every dollar men earn, women earn 78 cents (US)
More Discussion• Men are 4 times more likely to join an
internet dating website.• Men are 2.7 times more likely to become
involved in a road traffic accident.• 22% of men and 14% of women reported
being unfaithful in their marriages (USA Today Report, 1998)
• Therapist Peggy Vaugn in “Monogamy Myth” says 40% of women and 60% of men will cheat in their lifetime (2003).
Agree or Disagree?• Men are better at math/maths than
women – Long debate of whether biological
differences or stereotype of society– There are differences in brain, but women
can be just as good at math as men– Many people say women don’t perform as
well in math because they are told they won’t perform as well as men
Helen Reddy- I am woman
• Written in 1975• Women’s Movement, women’s rights
I am woman, hear me roarIn numbers too big to ignoreAnd I know too much to go back and pretend'Cause I've heard it all beforeAnd I've been down there on the floorNo one's ever gonna keep me down againOh yes, I am wiseBut it's wisdom born of painYes, I've paid the priceBut look how much I gainedIf I have toI can do anythingI am strong (strong)I am invincible (invincible)I am womanYou can bend but never break me'Cause it only serves to make meMore determined to achieve my final goalAnd I come back even strongerNot a novice any longer'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
Oh, yes, I am wiseBut it's wisdom born of painYes, I've paid the priceBut look how much I gainedIf I have toI can do anythingI am strong (strong)I am invincible (invincible)I am womanI am woman watch me growSee me standing toe to toeAs I spread my lovin' arms across the landBut I'm still an embryoWith a long, long way to goUntil I make my brother understand
Oh, yes, I am wiseBut it's wisdom born of painYes, I've paid the priceBut look how much I gainedIf I have toI can face anythingI am strong (strong)I am invincible (invincible)I am womanOh, I am womanI am invincibleI am strongI am womanI am invincibleI am strongI am woman
