Sonskyn Somer

With spring about, it is time to venture outdoors and visit one of the numerous open areas. With the wonderful weather now experienced,

the more than 30 kilometers of footpaths available for strolling, walking (and even jogging) and more than 100 hectares of open areas available to explore, it is no wonder so many of the residents are seen outdoors these days.

This newsletter provides information on the large number of parks and open areas that have become a feature of living in Midstream and surrounds. Recognition is also given to the personnel employed by the Home Owners Associations to keep our open areas in top nick – do tip your hat to them in appreciation on your next visit to one of the parks.

This newsletter is for the young laser war warriors in the parks, the mothers strolling with a young one, the golfers and fishermen at Midfield, the swimmers in- and outdoors, the picnic and birthday party groups, the joggers, the cyclists, and all the active people – enjoy the wonderful weather of spring time and the beauty of the local outdoors.

The parks in our village - a valuable green

asseTThe development of parks started in Midstream

in 2003 and has since become one of the key features of our development over the past 10

years. In many instances the naturally wooded areas were retained with lawn added in order to allow for activities in the park. To date the developed park areas, sidewalks and natural grasslands already exceed 100 hectares in extent and have become an asset in their own right to one and all. (The park area approximates the area covered by three golf courses).

Whilst visitors often recognise the expansion and beauty of the parks, the appeal for residents varies from person to person. The perceived benefits for individuals, the greater community, the economy of the estate, and finally for the environment, are summarised below -

The benefits for individuals who are active in the parks are many…

• The parks enrich the quality of life for people of all ages and physical abilities;

• Parks most probably allow people to exercise more than their counterparts who do not have access to parks;

• Beyond the benefits of exercise, it can be proven that contact with nature improves the wellbeing of both body and mind.

The Midrand Estates Newsletter - October 2013 7

The Midrand Estates Newsletter - October 2013 8

For the greater community the benefits are…

• The well-kept parks are key contributors to the aesthetic quality of the neighbourhood;

• The parks provide a safe haven for children’s parties and family get-togethers and stimulate communication between residents;

• The shrieks of laughter from kids playing in the park that drift across to the nearby houses put a smile on many a face.

The economic benefits of our green assets reveal that…

• The intrinsic value of the parks is reflected in the choices made by those residents who paid a premium for their stands directly adja-cent to a park. Their decisions reflect an important choice in quality of life;

• The increase in property values stretch beyond the stands directly next to the parks as the greater community reaps the benefit of these green assets within the greater neighbourhood;

The Midrand Estates Newsletter - October 2013 9

One has to look to the future when considering the benefits to the environment:

• Parks truly act as green lungs for 24 hours a day, every day, of every year. They cleanse the air, return oxygen to the atmosphere and provide a habitat for our flying, creeping, crawling, jump-ing and trotting friends who balance the eco-system around us.

• They provide peace for our souls - so important these days.

So when visiting one of the parks again reflect on the many ways in which they touch your life in a direct or indirect man-ner.

THE EVEREST EXPEDITION - Cheryl’s story

Mount Everest is the earth’s highest mountain, with a peak at 8,484m

above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. The mountain attracts many highly experienced mountaineers as well as capable climbers willing to hire professional guides. Cheryl, a resident at Retire@Midstream will be starting her journey up the Himalayas to the base camp on the 4th of October this year.

Cheryl shared her story with us.

“I am 63 years old and have never done anything this challenging before. My reason for deciding to climb Mount Everest rises out of the ashes of a deep tragedy and lingering sorrow, so when the opportunity came up to join a local group of experienced trekkers, I jumped at it. This will be a journey of a lifetime…”

Q: Why the highest mountain on Earth?A: “I suppose the highest mountain on our planet had a certain amount of symbolism for me. It just seemed to be right, an amazing challenge to help me move to a new beginning. Preparation for the trip started in February – speed

walking between 7,5 and 10km several times a week, cycling, hill climbing with weights on our backs and strength training in the gym. Because of the high altitudes aerobic conditioning is of paramount importance as it helps the body metabolize whatever oxygen is available. We will be trekking in extreme conditions and thin air - up to 40% less oxygen than at sea level. The most challenging obstacles in my preparation have been discipline, training even when I didn’t feel like it, and mental attitude.”

Q: What do your family and friends have to say?A: “When I first told my family and friends what I planned to do I think most of them thought I was a bit crazy and sometimes I thought they were right. However as the 4th of October draws closer they are all very supportive and excited for me.”

Q: What does your survival kit include?A: “Trekking in extreme conditions requires the correct clothing. A good pair of boots is an absolute necessity. Thermal underwear, warm socks, gloves, fleece hat, buff, warm soft shell jacket, rain coat and pants,

a comfortable backpack and trekking poles are needed. Our down jackets and sleeping bags with liners are supplied on loan as part of our package. Each person needs to take their own personal medication, and the “iTrekNepal” tour guide is experienced to deal with minor injuries and illnesses and carries a complete first aid kit on the journey. They also supply all the clean drinking water for our bottles.”

Q: What do you expect to experience / accomplish?A: “Sixteen days of trekking in the magnificent Himalayas to a height of 5,545 metres on Mount Everest. Just thinking about it thrills me. I hope to gain a deep sense of accomplishment, inner peace and finding “me” again. I am both excited and nervous all at the same time and cannot wait to leave on this amazing adventure.”

Our best wishes and good luck go to Cheryl and to all the other trekkers. Have a safe journey, enjoy the expedition and come share your experiences with Midstream on your return.

KARATE KID

World Karate Federation se Youth World Cup in Corfu, Griekeland, deelgeneem.

The Patrick O’Brien Golf Academy hosted its first annual winter

tournament in combination with a father and son event on

Saturday, 20 July. We had a good turnout with 27 juniors

participating and 16 of the fathers joining them for the Father

Son Competition. On a sunny but cool breezy day it was Wessel

van Wyk who took the outright honours with an excellent individual

stableford of 26 points. In close second was our winner from the

summer event on 24 points, Stephan Alberts handed the floating

trophy to his good friend Wessel for winning the event. Wessel

and Stephan are putting in hard work and many hours at the

academy and they have recently also joined Centurion Golf Club

to play more and improve their games even further. Watch out

for these two good friends as their golfing future are starting to

light up. With their dedication and current effort we can be

expecting great achievements from them in the near future.

Our under 9 department was won by a 7 year old on an excellent

score of 42 shots over 9 holes. Well done to local Jacques Vos

for outperforming all the youngsters. Being a keen golfer at this

young age the sky is the limit for Jacques and we wish him all

golfing luck as he continues with his golfing over the next few

years.

Father/Son honours went to Wessel and his dad Wessel van Wyk,

with second place going to Stephan and Rassie Alberts. The same

order as the overall junior division - just shows that the kids

were really carrying their fathers throughout the competition.

Will have to start practicing, dads!

Midstream’s first Blood Drive, in conjunction with the South African National Blood Service, was launched on the 22nd of August. Residents and local businesses were invited to the “save a life” campaign by donating blood at the Midstream Medical Centre. We are proud to announce that 29 units of blood were donated.

Be on the lookout for the next blood drive when local businesses will challenge each other for bragging rights on the most units collected.

The last tennis matches of the men’s and ladies doubles league were played on the 7th of September, and the usual Saturday afternoon social tennis at 14:00 commenced the following week.

Six ladies from the Midstream Tennis Club participated in the “Eikendal Sun City Ladies Double Open” and played again at Sun City from 21 to 24 July. Congratulations to Midstream’s Elize Altona and Mariesa van der Laan who were the runners up in this tournament.

With the assistance of the local security, Victor, the store manager at the Vodacom Chatz Midstream, apprehended a fraudster in-store early September.

The fraudster wasn’t as clever as he thought when he entered Vodacom Chatz with a stolen ID book to upgrade “his” contract in order to get an iPhone 5 32G handset. Fortunately the consultant who assisted the culprit went to the back office to inform the store manager that she suspected fraudulent activity. After a quick profile check the real owner was contacted and the centre security team alerted. The culprit was kept at bay until the arrival of the SA Police at which point he admitted to his offense.

Victor wrote: “I would like to express my thanks to the centre security team for a job well done. We are proud to say that we really feel safe in Midstream.”

With the festive season around the corner, everyone should take extra precautions when it comes to electronic card payments in public stores and restaurants. Residents are also once again reminded to shred personal documentation before disposing thereof. Such information ends up at dumping sites - and might just end up in the wrong hands.

Service Times:

Good day! Spring is here and we have a new lease on life! In the past two magazines I have looked at “Getting a Grip” on life issues. We’ve

looked at Getting a Grip on Fatigue and Fear, and today we look at Getting a Grip on Addictions. We humans are such addictive creatures. Addictions such as gambling, drinking or using illegal drugs we have either never experienced, or at some point have been able to conquer. However, we all remain addicted to something or the other, because addiction is not just the addict on the side of the road. Not just chemical substances used. Not just alcohol or cigarettes. Addiction is far wider.

Karen Foley gives us the following definition of addiction which works for obsession as well: “Any preoccupation with a substance, person, behaviour or thought pattern which has an adverse impact on your life, your functioning or your relationships.”

Why can obsessions and addictions be so dangerous?Preoccupation beyond a healthy interest, or what’s necessary to get work done, says to the people we love – “my relationship with this is more important than my relationship with you.”

Getting a grip on addictionsAdmit that you are powerless over the addiction or obsession. This means giving up control or the need to be in control. Its coming face to face with our human weakness and being prepared to be vulnerable. One of the foundations of the Christian faith is affirming that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Essentially, its recognising that we can do nothing in our own power to affect our salvation. Admitting that we can only trust in God’s goodness, mercy and saving power. Admitting that we are powerless over an addiction is not a sign of weakness but one of courageous faith. Its part of our total surrender to God.

Accept that you cannot control the addiction or obsession yourself. This second step fits in closely with the first – which is giving up control. This step is about taking responsibility. For some, admitting powerlessness is really difficult and a real stumbling block.

Turn to a greater power for help. If we just admitted our inability to take power over our addiction or obsession and did nothing else, then we would forever be left at their mercy. However, to let go and let God, is in fact actively inviting and seeking this greater power, God, to change us and transform us. We can’t. God can. Let him!

Let me conclude with the Serenity Prayer! This is one thing that can help us cope with the things that control us!

God, grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time. Enjoying one moment at a time. Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace. Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will. That I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever! Amen.

I look forward to sharing more thoughts with you again in the next edition of the Midstream News.

God bless you now and always, Jen

The Midrand Estates Newsletter - October 2013 19

Nowadays, almost all people own a compact camera. Most of these are

mobile phone cameras, however, they are still compact cameras. The question is, are compact cameras really of any use?

Compact cameras cover a wide spectrum. At the high end are the “bridge cameras” (Figure 1). They look very much like more advanced cameras (the SLR cameras) but they do not have replaceable lenses. Next are the small, flat compact cameras (Figure 1). They also cover a wide spectrum from being almost completely automatic

to a mix between automatic and manual. Mobile phone cameras are developing rapidly and may eventually replace the flat compact camera.

All compact cameras have two things in common:

• Even though they may have a telephoto function they all have wide angle lenses. Therefore, their depth of field can never be extremely shallow. For example, if a macro photo is taken at a minimum depth of field (f2.8 or less), the background detail will be more defined and visible compared to a dedicated macro lens.• The control over the camera is automatic or semi-automatic. Although some cameras may have a manual focus ability, for example, they are not as user friendly as SLR cameras. Therefore, the control over compact cameras is not as great as with SLR cameras.

The image quality of compact cameras is surprisingly good (figure 2 and 3) and in small pictures the difference between a compact and a SLR camera will be hardly visible. The advantage of SLR cameras is a better image quality at large magnification (A3 and larger). Their images are also better edited in programmes such as Photoshop. The reason being the better definition of pixels in a SLR camera (Figure 4).

The following principles will aid in deciding on a specific camera:

• Both Apple and Samsung produce mobile phones with excellent cameras. Apparently, Sony will in the near future market a mobile phone with even more advanced capabilities than Apple and Samsung.• The following principle also applies to compact cameras: the larger the physical size of a camera’s sensor, the better the image quality (this has nothing to do with the number of pixels).• Beware of too many pixels and too much lens zoom – they may introduce unacceptable “noise” levels in the image at extreme conditions (high ISO, extreme zoom, dark circumstances and high f-stop).• For a flat compact camera, a pixel count of 12-18 megapixels with a zoom of 10-20X will be more than enough. However, do some reading on that camera’s ability to suppress noise before buying one. The minimum zoom should be 6X – below that your creative abilities will be limited.• Bridge cameras have very powerful zoom lenses. However, too much might be counter productive. The image quality might suffer when the zoom gets too powerful. Furthermore, the more powerful the zoom, the more difficult it becomes to keep the camera stable. A zoom of 30X is more than enough. Again, do some reading on a specific camera before buying one.• For photography confined to trips (overseas, hiking, mountain climbing or just a trip by car) a compact camera is most useful due to its small size, light weight and low cost. Even experienced photographers use them under these circumstances.

In conclusion, compact cameras are most useful, even essential under certain circumstances. With proper knowledge of the camera and skillful use of its abilities, it will take you a long way.

A mobile phone camera is sufficient for one who photographs only occasionally and is interested in photography but doesn’t want to carry heavy, expensive equipment – for such a one a flat compact camera or a “bridge camera” (Figure 1) will suffice. The difference between these two is the larger size and more powerful zoom ability of the “bridge camera”.

It all adds upDo your bit to save electricity

Midstream Electrical Supplies (MES) is the local electricity supply utility that is responsible for the maintenance of the electricity supply network, distribution and metering of electricity in the greater Midstream area. With a customer service centre in the local shopping centre, MES is close to render assistance and provide advice.

What does it cost to boil a kettle of water? One of the most basic uses of electricity taking place in most households every day is boiling water in a kettle. The outline of the calculation is shown below, but the approximate cost of boiling a kettle of water containing 1.5 litres is approximately 20 cents per kettle.

To save yourself money (whilst saving electricity in the process), consider filling the kettle only halfway if you are boiling water for only a cup or two. Whilst the saving per kettle may not sound a lot, it all adds up…. Should the 3 500 families staying in the greater area each save 50% of the cost of boiling water on average twice a day, the combined saving in electricity for the day would be R700 per day and more than R250 000 for a year! Added to that, more than 200 000kWh of electricity could be saved! It all adds up!

The calculations:

Time to boil 1 liter with a 1 kW element (90% efficiency) Starting at 5°C 7.0 minutes Starting at 20°C 5.8 minutes Cost to boil a standard 1.5 liter kettle @ R1.20/ kWh Starting at 5°C 21 cents Starting at 20°C 17 cents Saving for 50% full kettle For a single application 10 cents Twice a day 20 cents 3 500 families/ day R700 per day 3 500 families/ year R255 000 per year 210 000 kWh pa

For those that want to know even more… Did you know that water boils at a temperature below 100°C in Midstream? By definition the boiling point of water is 100°C at 1 atmosphere of pressure (sea level) and with the atmospheric pressure being lower in Midstream it follows that the temperature at which water boils is less and boils at approximately 95°C in Midstream. The boiling point of water also depends on the purity of the water. Water which contains impurities (such as salted water or milk) boils at a higher temperature than pure water.

Hoephoeps word gewoonlik alleen of in pare gesien.

Midstream College Primary School takes part in many “Be good, do good”-

projects and the Crazy Socks Day on 31 May 2013 was no exception. A voluntary donation of R5 and a crazy array of wildly coloured socks raised a total amount of R 5 430.70 for Prinshof School of visually impaired students. Eight of Midstream College Primary School’s grade 7-learners visited Prinshof on 29 July 2013 to deliver our contributions to the Crazy Socks Day project. Prinshof School was originally built alongside the Pretoria Zoo so that the children could hear the sounds of the different animals in the zoo. Unfortunately, the area is not as inviting as it used to be, as taxi ranks have established themselves quite close to the school. The safety issues, however, do not mar the positive attitude and environment that is experienced at the school. Midstream College attended Prinshof’s senior assembly (seeing as grade 7 is part of their high school) and enjoyed a familiar structure - a Bible reading and life lesson message, followed by a grade 8-blind student, who sang two beautiful

songs. The biggest challenge and treat came after assembly, when the Midstream College learners were blind folded by the Prinshof learners and then led around the school grounds by these learners (both partially sighted and blind), very much a case of the blind leading the “blind”. The Midstream College learners were forced to experience school from a “blind” perspective, which included attending classes in a three storey building, using Braille to write an exam and to social normally in an otherwise familiar surroundings. The Prinshof learners conjured up a sense of respect from the Midstreamers, simply by being interesting and accomplished young students. Midstream College Primary School are pleased to have contributed towards the learners at Prinshof and we feel privileged and enriched to have shared in a small part of their lives for the day.

The name Taste of Midstream is self-

explanatory; it is an event hosted by Midstream College Primary School and it gives the event-goer a taste of what it is we do in Midstream – a gathering of friends with

a culinary twist and activities that will leave the kids in a tired zombie-state that keeps them face down on the couch. For these reasons, the Taste of Midstream is an event that every Midstreamer plans on attending.

The Taste of Midstream is held annually and it is the only social function where parents, children and teachers can socialize together. Guest artist Lloyd Cele, 2980 learners, 2990 adults, eight food booths, 42 games, 17 spit-roasts and the atmosphere Midstream came to expect all

contributed to another legendary Taste of Midstream on 17 August 2013.

With the standards being raised each year, I wonder what we can expect from 2014?

AN EYE-OPENING EXPERIENCE

ANOTHER LEGENDARY TASTE OF MIDSTREAM

On a Roll – is exactly where Midstream Hill is today! Midstream Hill has had a series of successful launches throughout the year, and

just recently x52 was sold out at just such a launch. Keen and excited buyerss all “on a roll” that day, secured their positions in order tochoose their favorite stand by rolling a golf ball as close to the pin as possible!! Fun and a sense of anticipation was experienced by all! With x52 now sold out, only x48 remains within Midstream Hill before all stands will have been sold.

Buyers who are looking for a large stand of 2000 sqm overlooking the bridle paths of Randjesfontein Equestrian Estate still have the opportunity to buy in Midstream Hill and can contact the Bondev Sales Office for more details. With many homes already completed and over a 100 presently under construction, prospective buyers can rest assured that they will be buying into an estate that is developing at a fast pace and the building activity is proof that the estate will be built up in no time.

On the 19th of October Midstream Hill will host a fun filled Soap Box racing open day (more commonly known as “kaskar resies”) and extends a welcome to all to visit Midstream Hill and come and join in the fun.

Midlands Estate is now formally completely “Sold Out” with no stands any longer available from the developer. This in itself is testament to the continued and ever increasing popularity of Midrand-Estates as a whole! The last few stands were sold at just under a million rand for 1000 sqm, and soon enough we will be reporting that this area too has been fully built up!

Good news for all interested parties wanting to buy a full title stand and build a home of their own design at Retire@Midstream! The Very Last full title extension

With excellent finishes and the best security and medical care on offer, the only thing left is to move in an enjoy the active and vibrant community that has developed in the last 3 years since our first residents moved in!

Many questions arise when considering a retirement option and we understand there can be valid concerns. We can confirm today that Our Home Care and Frail Care facilities are well established and that our Medical Care facilities will never be in danger of closing down (as is all too often heard of in other smaller Retirement Villages).

People often want to know if they can buy a unit and rent it out before they are ready to move in themselves. At Retire@Midstream you may rent out your unit for as long as you would like to persons who qualify under the HOA House Rules. With that said there are currently just such units, starting at approx R8 000, depending on the size of the unit, available to those who would prefer to rent rather than buy. This is a convenient way to enjoy all the facilities offered at Retire@Midstream without having to buy the unit yourself. There are specialized agents who can help you find a unit that suits your specific needs. Just visit the Sales office for Agents contact details.

The Year is moving forward at a fast pace!! Bondev is excited!

in the Junior Cyber Junkyard challenge this year. This is a competition hosted by Siemens with the aim of exposing future engineers to various fields including, but not limited to, industrial design, automation and programming. This year’s challenge was to design, build and program an energy efficient house. The team worked extremely hard during the July holidays and came second in the provincial round. The prize was a three-day programming course from Siemens.

Landscaping accessorises the home. Not only does it add colour to a house but it can be used to accentuate as well as define the focus to a

front door by its pattern and variation in surfaces. A sidewalk can also complement a home by giving a burst of colour to an otherwise monochromatic house or by using screening for privacy. The addition of sidewalk “jewels” is highly recommended and also encouraged by the estates, but residents are however warned to please be aware of the regulations concerning sidewalks as laid out by both the estate and by council requirements/bylaws.

These regulations are in place for the safety of all residents and visitors to the estate when travelling on foot. This then requires that any planting done on sidewalks, whether hard landscaping or soft landscaping, should be done in such a way that any pedestrian travelling past your home will encounter no obstruction that could force him to have to move onto a tarred road in order to pass.

Due to the influx of new residents as also all residents who will be utilizing our beautiful weather for walks, each owner is asked to please make the necessary changes to any landscaped sidewalks not conforming to the regulations. In the same way we request residents who are thinking of landscaping their

sidewalks to please make provisions for fellow residents to be able to walk through or past their gardens.

The placement of barriers on the sidewalks for the protection of lawns and sprinklers should also, and only, consist of concrete globes and no other materials in order to create a consistent and neat streetscape.

Below, please see all relevant regulations:

Estates Aesthetical rule:

7.8 Sidewalks7.8.1 The landscaping of sidewalks is of paramount importance as they have a direct influence on the aesthetical quality of the town; landscape development my not hinder pedestrian flow on all sidewalks.

Estates House rule:

9. Ensuring a pleasing streetscape9.1 Each stand owner is responsible for maintaining the area between the curb and the boundary of his/her property in a clean and pleasing

condition. The MHOA can compel the owner or tenant to improve the aesthetic appearance of this area when deemed necessary, at the cost of the owner.9.6 Planting should not interfere with pedestrian traffic or obscure the vision of motorists.

Chapter II32. Sidewalks

(2) No person shall erect any barriers, poles, chains or any other obstructions on any sidewalks without prior written approval from the Council and the barriers, poles, chains or any other obstructions erected, may not in any way impede the normal pedestrian traffic flow.
