The Bulls last victory was a 58-50 home win over East Carolina Jan. 3.

USF has only three players that played NCAA Division I basketball last season on its roster.

The Bulls are the second-youngest team at the NCAA Division I level in 2014-15.

WHAT THE TIGERS DID A YEAR AGO Memphis played its first season in the Ameri-

can Athletic Conference in 2013-14. The Tigers transitioned to The American from Conference USA in the summer of 2013.

In its inaugural season in The American, Mem-phis posted a 24-10 overall record and a 12-6 league mark.

The 20-win season was the programs 14th-straight.

The Tigers earned an NCAA Tournament berth and advanced to the Big Dances third round. Memphis defeated George Washington in the second round, before falling to Virginia in the third round.

The postseason appearance was the Tigers 14th-straight.

Joe Jackson and Shaq Goodwin both were named to the All-American Athletic Conference second team.

AustinNichols was named the leagues Rookie of the Year, and MichaelDixonJr. was selected the conferences Sixth Man of the Year.

Head coach Josh Pastner improved his overall record to 130-44. The 130 wins are the most by a Tigers head coach in the first five seasons.

The 130 wins also place Pastner in the No. 7 spot for most wins by a head coach in his first five seasons in NCAA Division I history.

WHAT THE BULLS DID A YEAR AGO USF posted a 12-20 overall record and a 3-15

American Athletic Conference mark in 2013-14.

    The Bulls finished 10th in the 2013-14 Ameri-can Athletic Conference regular-season stand-ings.

USF fell to Rutgers 72-68 in The American Tour-nament opening round.

SCOUTING THE BULLS USF brings a

    7-18 overall re-cord and a 1-11 American Ath-letic Conference mark into Satur-days game.

The Bulls have lost 10 in a row,

    2 0 1 4 - 1 5 M e m p h i s T i g e r s B a s k e t b a l l

  • including two road games in overtime at Tulane and Tulsa.

USFs margin of loss in its 10-game skid is 12.1 points and includes three single-digit setbacks.

The Bulls last win was a 58-50 home victory over East Carolina Jan. 3.

Corey Allen Jr. (15.5 ppg), Chris Perry (10.8 ppg) and Nehemias Morillo (10.2 ppg) average dou-ble figures for the Bulls.

Perry, however, has not played since Jan. 22 with a health issue, and Morillo missed the last two contests due to an illness.

Perry leads the squad with a 7.1 rebounding average, but is out with a health issue. Morillo is the teams second-leading rebounder at 4.9 rpg.

Anthony Collins leads USF and is second in The American in assists (128 total; 5.1 apg)

Allen Jr. is tops on the team in steals (36 total; 1.4 spg). He ranks sixth among The American steals leaders.

Allen Jr. is the Bulls top three-point shooter, hit-ting 35.3 percent from the arc (15th among The American leaders).

USF is shooting 43.1 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from the three-point line and 61.6 percent from the free throw line.

This time, however, Pastner will be on the op-posing bench from Antigua and Strickland.

All three served on John Caliparis staff during the 2008-09 season at Memphis.

The trio helped lead the Tigers to a 33-4 over-all record and a sweep of the Conference USA regular-season (16-0 league mark) and tourna-ment titles.

Pastner, Antigua and Strickland helped Mem-phis post a school-record 27-game win streak and reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

A Kingwood, Texas, na-tive, Pastner was hired as the University of Mem-phis 17th head coach on Apr. 7, 2009.

Pastner had a record of 130-44 at Memphis in his five seasons, the most victories by a Tigers head coach in that span of time.

His 130 wins are the seventh-most by a head coach in the first five seasons in NCAA Division I history.

Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 24-10 over-all record and a 12-6 American Athletic Conference mark.

In each of his five seasons, Pastner led the Tigers to a 20-win campaign and a postseason berth (2010 NIT; 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 NCAA)

Pastner served as an assistant coach for the Tigers in the 2008-09 season.

Prior to joining the Memphis basketball family, Pastner spent 12 years of his college basketball life at Arizona as a player, staff member and assistant coach.

While in Tucson, Pastner was a member of Wildcats squads that made 12-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and posted a 290-103 record (1997-2008).

Pastner was a player on the 1996-97 Arizona team that won the NCAA title.

Under head coach Josh Pastner, Memphis is 15-2 (.882 winning percentage) against NCAA Division I schools from the state of Florida.

21st century success vs. florida schools in STATE OF FLORIDA In the 21st century, Memphis has been rather

successful playing Florida NCAA Division I pro-grams inside the Sunshine state lines.

The Tigers have an 11-2 record (.846 winning percentage) when playing Florida NCAA Divi-sion I programs inside the Florida state lines since 2000-01.

Memphis is 5-0 versus USF, 5-1 versus UCF and 1-1 vs. Miami, Fla., and both losses were single-digit setbacks.

Under head coach Josh Pastner, Memphis is 4-1 (.800 winning percentage) when playing Floridas NCAA Division I schools inside the Sun-shine state lines.

NO THREES PLEASE If fans attending Tuesdays contest are expect-

ing a lot of three-pointers, they may be disap-pointed.

Memphis and USF are two of the leagues bot-tom teams in three-pointers made per game.

Memphis is ninth in the league in three-point-ers made per game (5.0). USF is last in the con-ference in treys made per game (4.2).

BLOCK PARTY SATURDAY While fans may not see too many three-point-

ers Saturday, they may enjoy a block party.

The Tigers and Bulls are two of the top-three shot-blocking teams in the American Athletic Conference.

Memphis leads the league in blocked shots at 6.8 swats per game. USF is third at 4.8 blocks per contest.

BRING BACK THAT DECEMBER D December is supposed to be the month of giv-

TIGERS M*A*S*H UNIT UPDATE Is it deja vu for the Tigers? Well, it seems so. Memphis had tough preseason practices, and

the injury bug hit the team big time. Eight Tigers, including seven on scholarship,

suffered injuries or illnesses that forced them to miss a total of 65 practices from Oct. 7-Dec. 1.

In fact, from Oct. 7 until the regular-season opener Nov. 18, the Tigers had only four prac-tices with the full complement of players.

DO YOU REMEMBER? Many should since it happened just last season. Memphis and USF played their first American

Athletic Conference game against each other on Dec. 31, 2013.

The Tigers posted an 88-73 victory over the Bulls at the USF Sun Dome.

TIGERS LOVE VALENTINES DAY Saturday is Valentines Day, and the Tigers sure

love to play on that special day as reflected in their record.

Since World War II, Memphis is 14-6 (.700 win-ning percentage) when it plays on Valentines Day.

The last time Memphis played on Feb. 14 was the 2008-09 campaign. The Tigers recorded a 72-47 win at Southern Miss Feb. 14, 2009.

Memphis won five-straight Valentines Day games from 1979-80 through 1992-93.

Two of the Tigers more memorable Valentines Day games were a 78-71 upset win over No. 18 Louisville in 1973-74 and a 70-63 victory over Cincinnati in the 1990-91 season.

21st century success VERSUS STATE OF FLORIDA SCHOOLS In the 21st century, Memphis has been rather

successful playing NCAA Division I schools from the state of Florida.

The Tigers have a 29-4 record (.879 winning percentage) when playing NCAA Division I pro-grams from the Sunshine State since 2000-01.

Memphis is 14-1 versus UCF, 0-1 versus Florida, 2-1 versus Miami, Fla., 1-0 versus North Florida and 12-1 versus USF.

MOST WINS IN FIRST SIX YEARS Of course, head coach Josh Pastner will pass

on credit to the current players, former players, current assistant coaches, former head coaches and, yes, even Tiger Nation.

But, the fact is Pastner is closing in on becoming the winningest head coach in Tigers history for the first six years.

The following shows the head coaches win to-tals for their first six seasons since 1949:

FOLLOWING A LOSS UNDER PASTNER The Tigers lost to Temple 61-60 Feb. 7 and East

    Carolina 64-53 Feb. 10.

It is the second time Memphis dropped con-secutive decisions this season

The Tigers have a 46-6 record (.885 winning percentage) after a loss under Pastner.

With the loss to SMU Jan. 8, Memphis suffered back-to-back losses under Pastner for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign 80 games ago. The Tigers lost to Tulane Jan. 3.

Prior to the two-game skid, the Tigers last dropped consecutive decisions to VCU and Minnesota Nov. 22-23, 2012.

WHAT THE TIGERS ARE LOOKING TO AVOID ... Memphis is trying to avoid its third-straight

conference loss. The last time Memphis lost three-consecutive league games was at the end of the 2004-05 regular season.

That season, the Tigers lost their last four league games in a row to Charlotte, Louisville, Saint Louis and Cincinnati.

PICKING UP THE PACE It was going to take time for him to shake the

rust off, and MarkelCrawford has done so in a big way with his recent performances.

The 6-foot-4 guard entered the 2014-15 season after missing the previous two years of basket-ball as the result of an ACL injury and rehab.

He suffered the ACL injury prior to his senior campaign and sat out his final prep season.

The Memphis, Tenn., native then took a medi-cal redshirt season in 2013-14 with the Tigers.

The following shows how Crawford has found his groove in recent games:

    First 13 Games Stat Last 11 Games 3.7 PPG 7.9 0 Dbl-Figure Gms 3 1.7 RPG 2.6 1.1 APG 2.7 0.6 SPG 1.4 37.5 FG Pct. 48.5 33.3 3P FG Pct. 37.1 80.0 FT Pct. 88.9 15.6 MPG 27.4

CRASHING THE BOARDS The Tigers focus in the off-season was on the

defensive end, and one area of defense the team worked on was the glass especially ending opponents possessions after one shot.

Memphis has shown what it learned in the early portion of 2014-15.

The Tigers are second in the American Athletic Conference in rebound margin at +5.5.

The Tigers are second in the conference in of-fensive rebounds (12.8) and fifth in the league in defensive rebounds (25.2).

In their win over UCF Jan. 17, the Tigers out-re-bounded the Knights 53-24 for a +29 rebound margin.

The +29 rebound margin is the largest in the Josh Pastner era.

  • LEARNING TO SHARE With the Tigers having nine first-year players,

the team is beginning to learn what has be-come a signature of Josh Pastner squads sharing the ball.

And Memphis has seen the results of lessons learned from sharing the ball in recent games.

In the last 19 contests from Dec. 6-Feb. 10, the Tigers averaged 15.2 assists per game. In its first five games, Memphis averaged only 10.0 assists per contest.

The Tigers also have moved over 200 spots in the NCAA rankings for assists per game the past 19 contests.

Entering the Dec. 6 Bradley game, Memphis ranked No. 298 in the nation in assists per game. Now, the Tigers are ranked No. 75 in as-sists per contest.

In recent seasons, Memphis has been one of the top teams in assists per game, and the fol-lowing shows that (along with this years cur-rent rank):

    Season Asst/Game NCAARank2014-15 14.1 *752013-14 17.4 42012-13 16.8 52011-12 14.5 552010-11 14.6 542009-10 13.8 112* through 24 games

HIGH DISHIN EQUALS MADE SHOTS One of the main reasons Memphis head coach

Josh Pastner loves high assists numbers: it leads to easier shots and more field goals made.

In each of his previous five seasons, Pastners squads have assisted on over 50 percent of the teams field goals made, and the following shows that (also lists this seasons numbers af-ter 24 games):

    Season FGM Assts Pct.2014-15 593 339 57.2*2013-14 958 591 61.72012-13 976 605 62.02011-12 933 506 54.22010-11 891 512 57.52009-10 854 468 54.8*moved above 50 percent vs. Bradley Dec. 6 (15 assists on 21 FGM)

ITS A NICHOLS BLOCK PARTY For sophomore Austin Nichols, the 2014-15

campaign has become his own personal block party.

However, Nichols block party is on hold while he sits out with a sprained right ankle. He suf-fered the injury versus Temple Feb. 7 and missed the Feb. 10 East Carolina contest.

In the 23 games in which he played, the 6-foot-9 forward has 77 blocked shots, which surpass-es his blocks total from a season ago (42).

His 77 blocks have him in the No. 8 spot on the season blocked shots chart.

NINE NEWBIES TIES FOR MOST SINCE FRESHMENELIGIBILITY IN 1972-73 The Tigers have nine newcomers with one

freshmen, two transfers, four junior college transfers and two returnees that did not see a minute of playing time in 2013-14.

TIGERS LOOKING FOR 15TH 20-WIN SEASON With the 2014-15 season officially underway,

the Tigers are looking for a 15th-straight, 20-win season and a 15th-consecutive postseason berth.

In 2012-13, the Tigers set the record for consec-utive 20-win seasons with their 13th straight. The previous record was 12 from 1982-93.

The 2014-15 Tigers will attempt to add to the programs current school record of 14-straight postseason bids (10 NCAA, 4 NIT). Last season, Memphis advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round.

Prior to this current record run of 14-straight postseason berths, Memphis had two six-year stretches in which it reached the postseason.

The previous two six-year postseason spans were 1972-77 (2 NCAA, 4 NIT) and 1988-93 (4 NCAA, 2 NIT).

The next up to graduate is junior Shaq Good-win, who is on track to graduate in the summer of 2014.

MEMPHIS RECEIVES NCAA PUBLICRECOGNITION AWARD FOR fourth YEAR For the fourth-straight year, the Memphis

mens basketball team received an NCAA Public Recognition Award, given to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of their respective sports.

Memphis was one of 13 schools in the nation to receive an NCAA Public Recognition Award and also participate in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Memphis and Louisville were the only two American Athletic Conference programs to re-ceive an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports most-recent multi-year Aca-demic Progress Rate (APR). This year, the top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most-recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.
