Are we a friendly church? In your mind you are saying, “Pastor, of course we are friendly!”. Here is the reality, every church thinks they are friendly. The reasons are simple. They are friendly to each other. They are friendly to people they know. They are friendly to people they like. They are friendly to people like them. Those reasons do not compose friendliness. Those are

the reasons that people have a club. Lifeway Research is the research arm of the Southern Baptist Convention. Lifeway conducted a survey that found while three out of four church goers say they have significant relationships with people at church, they admitted they do not make an effort with new people. The survey found only one in six even try to make friends with new people. Friendliness involves more than a smile and a welcome. Friendliness has to do with acceptance. Fr iendl iness involves atmosphere. If there is not an atmosphere of acceptance there can be little hope of reaching people. If couples living together, gay couples, addicted people or skeptical people attend it must be taken in stride to allow those people to be at ease. We do not compromise the biblical models. Acceptance is not affirmation of lifestyle but it involves starting with people where they are. Jesus accepted people where they were and challenged them to follow him.

The White House Office of Consumer Affairs found ninety-six percent of unhappy customers never complain about rude or unfriendly treatment, but ninety percent of those unhappy customers will not return to the place where they were met with unfriendliness. Even worse, one unhappy customer will tell nine others about the lack of friendliness or courteousness. The research shows and Jesus said we must be willing to wrap our arms around those that come. We must be willing to get our hands dirty. We must take the Five Finger Gospel that Mother Theresa spoke about: You Did It To Me. The atmosphere of acceptance has a climate of involvement – involvement in the lives of people.

T h e o n l y c h i l d o f missionaries, I was born in Nairobi, Kenya and lived in a village called Meru for the first five years of my life. We came back to the states and settled in Virginia, where my dad was a preacher in a small country church and my mom worked at the Women’s Missionary Union of VA (WMU). As a result, I was highly active in the Church both on the local and the state level. One of the biggest blessings in

my life is to have two loving parents who are miraculously still married and in love with one another. I’m an introvert, and it’s taken me a long time to discover how an introvert can serve God just as capably as extroverts. I have to remind myself that we’re different—not better or worse—and we both have strengths and weaknesses. In high school, I discovered that one of my spiritual gifts is teaching. I love explaining things. I love watching people have the ‘light bulb’ moment—especially when it comes to God/Jesus/Holy Spirit. Maybe it’s because truth in the spiritual realm can be a bit counter intuitive. Or maybe it’s because God has helped me so much in my own life I want others to learn from my mistakes instead of having to go through the school of hard knocks! In college I discovered theatre. Have you ever had that “I was made for this!” feeling? That’s theatre for me. It’s not the be-all, end-all of my

gifting, but when I discovered it, it was like an otter discovering water. Post college I discovered something else—the importance of family. I’ve always been a bit of an adventurer. I’ve lived in six different states and traveled to fifteen different states and five different countries. All through school I took my family for granted. They were the tethering post. No matter how far I roamed, I knew I could come back home. Now I live on my own and for the past four years I’ve lived far from my parents and seen them once or twice a year. I miss them. This past year is the first time in a while we’ve lived in the same state again. They moved to Tyler, Texas and I’m so happy I could cry. As a final note, I’d like to add that I am UBER excited about working with youth again! Teenagers have this glorious all-or-nothing mentality and because of that, when the Lord gets a hold of a youth’s heart, they aren’t merely a candle in the dark, they are the finale of a firework show. May the Lord move in our midst and may we see glorious reds and yellows and blues fill this present darkness with His blazing light.

Hello MDBC families!

We are off to a strong

start in Upwards Children’s

Church; there has been a

consistent number of about 20

children in our children’s

building on Sunday mornings!

We are definitely excited to

have so many little ones join

us on Sundays.

I hope you have been able to attend our recent worship services and have experienced the improvements made possible through the completion of Rebuilding 3.0 – Phase 1. By the time you read this note, we should be anticipating the arrival of our new Worship Center interior and exterior doors. We expect installation will begin immediately upon their delivery. We have not authorized the contractor to begin the new Family Washroom (ADA Compliant) or the upgrading of the existing washrooms until we receive additional funding from our members. I’m asking each of you to make this a matter of personal prayer so our funding goals can be met and our re-construction completed.

WOMEN The book of Hosea—it’s a deeply personal and passionate love story, yet it’s a difficult story. As an account full of harsh judgment unfolds, we find in its midst a rare and pure gem: the truest and purest of loves. Hosea, an old-testament prophet, preached his own life message using his marriage as the sermon illustration. The study of Hosea looks deeply at that

message. It provides background to better understand the intricacies of the man and his message. You’ll be guided to understand, and to apply the message of the prophet of love. The book will challenge us with judgment so harsh it will singe our hair—an unheeded sermon warning of devastating doom shortly to come. But it will show us the kind of love we dream about. Be amazed by the love of Hosea for his wayward spouse—and more amazed by the unfailing love of God for His wayward people, and for all people. Hosea showers us with hope—hints and portents pointing to the coming of the promised Messiah.

MEN Kingdom Man challenges and equips men to fully understand their position under God as well as their position over what God has given them. It provides concepts men can follow that will help them to actively pursue ways to maximize and develop the character qualities of biblical manhood in their lives.
