As well as the main liberation commemorations there are many other events that take place in the former sub-camps of Mauthausen and sites of Nazi terror. In total, 40,000 people participated in the memorial and liberation events in 2015 of whom 22,000 people, including concentration camp survivors and many high- level politicians from within Austria and abroad, were at Mauthausen concentration camp with the remaining 18,000 at more than 90 memorial events at former sub-camps and memorial sites, sending the strong message of “Never Again”. The majority of events, with participants from the region but also from many countries throughout Europe, were organ- ised by local organisations and initiatives in close cooperation with the Austrian Mauthausen Committee. Each year since 2006 has been designated a special theme related to the history of Mauthausen Concentration Camp and the history of Nazism in Austria to frame the events. The relevance to the present day is an essential element of the topic chosen each year and should especially work to help link the discussion of the context and ideology of National So- cialism to the lives and experiences of young people today. The theme chosen for this year’s memorial and liberation events is “International Solidarity”. The continued commemoration of the victims of Nazi crimes, particularly those people imprisoned in Mauthausen and its sub-camps as well as the engagement in anti-fascism and anti-racism work with young people are the main activities of the MKÖ. The MKÖ has been able to reach 63,000 young people in recent years through civil courage training, guided tours through the memorial site of Mauthausen concentration camp and its sub-camps, the pre-visit preparation and post-visit work, anti-racism workshops such as the new workshop “Wir sind alle”, the racism simulation game “Miramix” as well as the diverse event-related and thematic youth projects. Memorial and Liberation Events 2016

Each year the Austrian Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ) organises and coordinates the largest memorial and liberation

event in Europe in close cooperation with survivor organisations at a national (Austrian Camp Community) and interna-

tional level (Comité International de Mauthausen), with this year seeing the 71st anniversary of the liberation of

Mauthausen Concentration Camp. As well as the main liberation commemorations there are many other events that

take place in the former sub-camps of Mauthausen and sites of Nazi terror. In total, 40,000 people participated in the

memorial and liberation events in 2015 of whom 22,000 people, including concentration camp survivors and many high-

level politicians from within Austria and abroad, were at Mauthausen concentration camp with the remaining 18,000 at

more than 90 memorial events at former sub-camps and memorial sites, sending the strong message of “Never Again”.

The majority of events, with participants from the region but also from many countries throughout Europe, were organ-

ised by local organisations and initiatives in close cooperation with the Austrian Mauthausen Committee.

Each year since 2006 has been designated a special theme related to the history of Mauthausen Concentration Camp

and the history of Nazism in Austria to frame the events. The relevance to the present day is an essential element of the

topic chosen each year and should especially work to help link the discussion of the context and ideology of National So-

cialism to the lives and experiences of young people today. The theme chosen for this year’s memorial and liberation

    events is “International Solidarity”.

The continued commemoration of the victims of Nazi crimes, particularly those people imprisoned in Mauthausen and

its sub-camps as well as the engagement in anti-fascism and anti-racism work with young people are the main activities

of the MKÖ. The MKÖ has been able to reach 63,000 young people in recent years through civil courage training, guided

tours through the memorial site of Mauthausen concentration camp and its sub-camps, the pre-visit preparation and

post-visit work, anti-racism workshops such as the new workshop “Wir sind alle”, the racism simulation game “Miramix”

as well as the diverse event-related and thematic youth projects. In autumn 2016, the first tours took place as part of

“International Solidarity” For the prisoners of the Nazi concentration camps international solidarity had a particular significance. This was also the case in Mauthausen and its sub-camps, where Austrians formed only a small minority of the people imprisoned there. The concentration camp prisoners realised very quickly that any resistance against the SS in the camp and the prisoners in positions of power would have to have to be based on cooperation and overcoming national and other differences. Any act of organised solidarity or even political discussion was punished by death in the concentration camps. These il-legal resistance organisations were active in Mauthausen by 1944 at the latest. Solidarity began to develop with the arrival of 1600 prisoners from Dachau concentration camp in 1939. Other small groups formed along national lines as prisoners arrived from countries such a Poland, Spain, the Czech Republic and the former Yugoslavia. The Spanish Republicans brought solidarity to an international level. In the clerk’s office of Mauthausen concentration camp the Czechs, Spanish and Germans – and later other nationalities – were active. The po-litical prisoners in this clerk’s office were central to the solidarity and resistance. International solidarity in the concentration camp took many forms, including encouraging the development of illegal resistance groups in the sub-camps, establishing contact with the local community, minimising conflict between the dif-ferent national groups in the camp, listening to foreign radio broadcasts and spreading information about the course of the war, routing out SS informants, supplying prisoners – especially the sick – with food and clothing, and offering a cul-tural programme, such as music. They also undertook acts of sabotage and prepared for a military uprising in the case of a mass liquidation of the camp. By winter 1944/45, the illegal solidarity had developed to such an extent that individual prisoners who were in particular danger could be rescued. At the end of April 1945 an international committee was founded by Heinrich Dürmayer, a prisoner who had arrived in Mauthausen from Auschwitz in January 1945. The committee met several times a day until the liberation of the camp and after liberation served to keep the administration running. In the days leading up to and during liberation in May 1945 the committee came into its own, ensuring the orderly handing over of the camp to the Americans, helping to administer first aid and emergency help and assisting in the repatriation of prisoners. Several na-tional committees were founded between the day of liberation and the 8th May 1945 and sent representatives to the in-ternational committee. With the departure of the Soviet prisoners on 16th May 1945, the International Mauthausen Committee issued an emphatic plea to contribute with mutual respect and solidarity to the rebuilding of a free and just world. May 1947 saw a meeting of former prisoners and their families to commemorate their liberation. The International Mauthausen Committee (Comité International de Mauthausen) remains active to this day and in-cludes representatives from 21 countries in Europe and the USA. In 2015, they spoke out in the context of the refugee crisis: “We feel sadness, helplessness and disgust, and are reminded of a reality – as Jews, “Gypsies” and political pris-oners – of being shunted between the borders of the so-called democratic states with negligence and indifference. We are true to our vow of “never again” and will fight to make sure that the lack of international solidarity towards the refugees does not go ignored.” A lack of international solidarity becomes ever clearer. One of the causes is the relationship between industrialised and developing countries and is demonstrated once more through war and the resulting waves of refugees. However, in-stead of a focus on international solidarity, the Far-Right gets stronger, fear prevails, and scaremongering and the de-mands for the building of fences and turning Europe into a fortress get louder. Now, more than ever, is the time to see solidarity on an international scale.
