On March 20th, 2015 at 9.22 a.m., Northern Ontario Chemicals learned of a freight train

derailment in Colgate, a rural community located in the outskirts of Small Ville town. The

owners of the chemicals have confirmed to us that it was being transported by Yellow Line

Railway (YLR) to our refinery in Small Ville. Unfortunately, this event resulted in a toxic

chemical spill from three of the tanker carriages of the freight train which contaminated the area

of Colgate. Presently, the chemical spill has claimed the lives 3 local residents in Colgate which

resulted in the immediate evacuation of Colgate residents residing in areas within 2 km of the

derailment site. In addition to the chemical spill, a fourth tanker wagon containing fuel for the

freight train exploded and the fire has spread to the nearby Gump Forrest. As a result of the fire

which continues to burn out of control, 8 homes were destroyed with another 30 homes, a school

and a local pub being affected.

Our concern is for the tragic loss of life and the impact on the people of Colgate. We are

currently working closely with the local authorities of Colgate as they develop strategies to

contain the chemical spill and the fire. We also immediately offered emergency response

assistance to the authorities to investigate the cause of the derailment and determine the impact

of the spill. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected by this tragedy.
