An age- growth s t u d y and i n v e s t i g a t i o n o f spawning h a b i t a t was c o n d u c t e d a t Eneas Lake E a s t ( N o r t h ) , Eneas Lake S o u t h a n d Tsuh (Deer) Lake . Spawning h a b i t a t was i n v e s t i g a t e d a t I s l a n d Lake. The o b j e c t i v e was t o p r o v i d e f i s h growth a n d spawning h a b i t a t i n f o r m a t i o n t o a s s i s t i n d e v e l o p i n g a f u t u r e management s t r a t e g y .

Eneas Lake E a s t , Eneas Lake Sou th , I s l a n d and Tsuh Lakes a r e p a r t of t h e Eneas Lakes P r o v i n c i a l P a r k . They a r e h i g h e l e v a t i o n (1524 m ) , low p r o d u c t i v i t y (T.D.S. r a n g e 82 t o 127 m g / l ) l a k e s l o c a t e d a p p r o x i m a t e l y 25 km n o r t h west o f Summerland. S e e t h e a t t a c h e d Lake S u r v e y F i e l d Record a n d Lake Management S h e e t s f o r p e r t i n e n t p h y s i c a l i n f o r m a t i o n . A l l l a k e s c o n t a i n o n l y r a inbow t r o u t .
Management o b j e c t i v e f o r t h e s e l a k e s i s t o p r o v i d e s m a l l t o m o d e r a t e s i z e r a i n b o w t r o u t (20 cm t o 30 c m a v e r a g e l e n g t h ) a t a h i g h CPUE (2 f i s h t o 4 f i s h / d a y ) . E x p e c t a t i o n s w i l l v a r y s l i g h t l y d e p e n d i n g on w h e t h e r t he l a k e is n a t u r a l l y p r o d u c e d o r h a t c h e r y s u p p l e m e n t e d . C o n t r o l on number of f i s h i s h i g h e r on a h a t c h e r y s u p p l e m e n t e d l a k e ; t h e r e f o r e t h e r e i s more c o n t r o l on t h e f i n a l p r o d u c t ( f i s h o u t ) . Eneas E a s t , Eneas S o u t h a n d Tsuh L a k e s a r e t o t a l l y s u p p o r t e d by n a t u r a l p r o d u c t i o n . Changes t o t h e l e v e l of n a t u r a l p r o d u c t i o n are d i f f i c u l t , p a r t i c u l a r l y r e d u c i n g a v a i l a b l e spawning a r e a . The f i s h e r i e s have m a i n t a i n e d t h e m s e l v e s s i n c e t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n o f r a inbow t r o u t . P r o t e c t i o n o f n a t u r a l t r o u t p o p u l a t i o n s i s a h i g h p r i o r i t y i n t h i s s u b- r e g i o n ; t h e r e f o r e spawning h a b i t a t h a s been , and w i l l c o n t i n u e t o be p r o t e c t e d and s t o c k i n g w i l l be a v o i d e d u n l e s s a n g l e r CPUE d r o p s t o an u n r e a s o n a b l y low l e v e l .

S t o c k i n g h a s r a n g e d f rom 1 0 , 0 0 0 f i n g e r l i n g r a inbow t r o u t d u r i n g i n i t i a l s t o c k i n g t o 5 , 0 0 0 u p t o 1988 a n d 2 ,000 from 1988 t o p r e s e n t . S u p p l e m e n t a l s t o c k i n g was deemed n e c e s s a r y t o e n s u r e a d e s i r a b l e a n g l e r C.P. U .E . is m a i n t a i n e d . Methods
S t a n d a r d d imension s i n k i n g monofilament g i l l n e t gangs were set i n Eneas East, Eneas South and Tsuh Lakes. See t h e a t t a c h e d F i s h Sample Records S h e e t s f o r i n f o r m a t i o n r e g a r d i n g n e t d imens ions , mesh s i z e , set d u r a t i o n and l o c a t i o n .
Length we igh t , s e x , m a t u r i t y and stomach c o n t e n t s were r e c o r d e d and s c a l e s t a k e n from a l l f i s h samples .
A l L p o t e n t i a l spawning s t r e a m s were walked and s p a w n i n g / r e a r i n g c a p a b i l i t y r e c o r d e d . . .-
S c a l e samples were p r o c e s s e d by photographing-fhem on a m i c r o f i c h e p r i n t e r . The s c a l e p r i n t s were t h e n aged a d - a n n u l i marked. Back c a l c u l a t e d l e n g t h s a t age a r e n o t a v a i l a b l e a t t h i s t i m e .

Depths and p e r c e n t a g e l i t t o r a l zone which v a r i e s from 75% i n Tsuh Lake t o 100% i n I s l a n d Lake, w i l l have a s i g n i f i c a n t impact on p r o d u c t i o n c a p a b i l i t y and may i n c r e a s e t h e p r e d i c t e d l e v e l t o a modera te v a l u e ( ie : b io- index o f 10-15 - I n d i c e s of P r o d u c t i v i t y i n B.C. T h i s v a r i a t i o n seems t o b e more p r e v a l e n t i n n a t u r a l l y p r o d u c i n g l a k e s w i t h low p r o d u c t i v e c a p a b i l i t y a s opposed t o s t o c k e d l a k e s .
G i l l n e t t i n g C.P.U.E. was modera t e (4 f i s h / s t a n d a r d g a n g / h r i n Eneas E a s t and 2 . 5 f i s h / s t a n d a r d g a n g / h r i n Tsuh) i n d i c a t i n g f i s h p o p u l a t i o n s i n b o t h l a k e s may b e below t h e l e v e l ( c a r r y i n g c a p a c i t y ) where g rowth i s n e g a t i v e l y effected ( d e n s i t y d e p e n d e n t r e s p o n s e ) . Slow g rowth i n t h e s e l a k e s i s l i k e l y t h e r e s u l t o f p h y s i c a l c o n s t r a i n t s w i t h i n l a k e env i ronmen t ( low p r o d u c t i v i t y ) .
C o n d i t i o n f a c t o r i s low f o r b o t h l a k e s compar i son t o o t h e r l a k e s w i t h t h i s i n f o r m a t i o n a v a i l a b l e , b u t i s p r e d i c t a b l e c o n s i d e r i n g t h e low p r o d u c t i o n p o t e n t i a l and t h e s low growth r a t e . I n most c a s e s , t h e r e i s a c l o s e r e l a t i o n s h i p between g rowth ra te a n d c o n d i t i o n f a c t o r - f a s t e r t h e growth , h i g h e r t h e c o n d i t i o n f a c t o r .
Age s t r u c t u r e i n d i c a t e s n e i t h e r p o p u l a t i o n i s o v e r e x p l o i t e d . These l a k e s d i s p l a y t h e h i g h e s t p e r c e n t a g e a g e 4 a n d o l d e r f i s h r e c o r d e d i n t h i s s u b- r e g i o n . (71% Eneas E a s t and 44% Tsuh) . Eneas E a s t a l s o d i s p l a y s t h e o n l y a g e 7 f i s h r e c o r d e d f o r a s m a l l l a k e i n t h i s s u b- r e g i o n .
No c o n c l u s i o n s c a n be r e a c h e d c o n c e r n i n g t h e E n e a s S o u t h f i s h p o p u l a t i o n . The g i l l n e t set was v e r y s h o r t d u r a t i o n ( 2 h o u r s d a y t i m e ) and was o n l y 32 metres i n l e n g t h ( n o f i s h c a p t u r e d ) . The f i s h p o p u l a t i o n ( d e n s i t y and growth r a t e ) i s l i k e l y v e r y s imi la r
t o Eneas E a s t d u e t o t h e i r c l o s e p r o x i m i t y a n d d i r e c t c o n n e c t i o n which a l l o w s unimpeded s h o r t d i s t a n c e t r a v e l be tween l a k e s . Eneas E a s t a n d Eneas S o u t h a r e e s s e n t i a l l y the same l a k e w i t h a minor c o n s t r i c t i o n be tween them.
C u r s o r y o b s e r v a t i o n s a t I s l a n d Lake i n d i c a t e t h e l a k e may b e o v e r p o p u l a t e d . F i s h were e v i d e n t i n a l l a r e a s o f t h e l a k e , r i s i n g f o r c h i r o n o m i d s a n d e x h i b i t i n g spawning b e h a v i o u r a l o n g t h e s h o r e l i n e . A management r e p o r t by t h e M i n i s t r y o f P a r k s (see l a k e s f i l e ) recommended d i s c o n t i n u i n g s t o c k i n g . T h i s would a p p e a r t o be a good s t r a t e g y c o n s i d e r i n g t h e low a n g l i n g p r e s s u r e , a p p a r e n t h i g h d e n s i t y f i s h p o p u l a t i o n and d e s i r e t o m a i n t a i n n a t u r a l p o p u l a t i o n s .
A v a i l a b l e spawning h a b i t a t a p p e a r s a d e q u a t e t o m a i n t a i n t h e desired f i s h e r y o b j e c t i v e s on a l l f o u r l a k e s ; t h e r e f o r e , no s u p p l e m e n t e d s t o c k i n g o r s p e c i a l r e g u l a t i o n s a r e r e q u i r e d .
