PURPOSEThe purpose of this memo is to show the design vehicles that have been modeled to illustrate thefunctionality of the proposed roundabout at the intersection of TH 169 and CR 37 in Hibbing, MN.The roundabout will need to accommodate Oversize/Overweight (OSOW) vehicle traffic in order tomaintain current levels of functionality at the intersection. This memo discusses how these vehiclesmay traverse the intersection.
BACKGROUNDThe intersection of TH 169 and CR 37 is currently a four-legged, signalized intersection. The landaround it is a mix of commercial and residential usage. The intersection has experienced crash rateshigher than the state average for similar intersections. In order to address these issues a preliminarydesign project was undertaken by MnDOT District 1. Alternatives were considered, primarily throughdevelopment of an Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE ) report and communications with the Cityof Hibbing. Ultimately, a roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative and a Level IGeometric Layout was prepared. As part of the Layout process, a design vehicle of a WB-67 truckwas used for non-permitted traffic that will need to pass through the roundabout. Through projectdevelopment a need to convey movements of large and uniquely configured vehicles associatedwith area mining activities was identified. See photos of examples of these vehicles below.
METHODOLOGYThe software AutoTURN by Transoft was used to model OSOW vehicles navigating the roundabout.Routes involving the south leg of the intersection were excluded from the analysis as OSOW vehiclesdo not currently travel on that leg and are unlikely to do so in the future.

RESULTSTwo OSOW vehicles were examined for the analysis. The first was a tandem pair of WB-62s. The pairof vehicles has a width of 26 foot. An 18 foot offset from centerline to centerline was used to keepthe two vehicles the same distance from each other at all times in the modeling. Figures 1-5 showthe results of the analysis. As shown in the Figures, some movements will require the use of oncomingtraffic lanes and surmounting medians, so normal vehicle and pedestrian operations will have tocease while the OSOW vehicle utilizes the intersection.
The second vehicle analyzed was a 16 foot wide by 149 foot superload transporter. Based onpermits issued by MnDOT, this was the longest vehicle to have utilized the intersection in the past.Analysis in AutoTURN showed that this vehicle would be able to remain within the same paths as thetandem pair of WB-62s and that the tandem WB-62s is effectively the design vehicle for this analysis.
Final sign locations have not been determined at this time. However, medians and islands of all legsother than the south leg are traversed by OSOW vehicles. Therefore, all signs placed in thesemedians and islands need be removable to accommodate these movements.
Where the roadway is not wide enough, the turf will need to be reinforced and flattened. This willbe addressed in the final design.
It should also be noted that the paths of some movements do go directly under some of theproposed overhead lighting. This should be considered when choosing the style of overheadlighting used at the intersection.
CONCLUSIONThe roundabout is capable of accommodating both the vehicles that were analyzed. All othersmaller OSOW vehicles that use the TH 169/CR 37 intersection identified in the permit records will beable to continue to use the intersection.
